  • An integrated fault diagnosis system for heterogeneous manufacturing environments is developed. This system has a contrast with existing diagnosis systems in the respect that they are mostly for diagnosing faults on individual machines. In addition to the usual (e.g., audio, electrical) diagnostic signals, the characteristics of products from the machines are considered as the unifying diagnostic parameters among heterogeneous machines in the diagnosis. The system is composed of a knowledge representation scheme and a diagnostic query processing mechanism. Its knowledge representation scheme allows the diagnostic knowledges from heterogeneous unit diagnostic systems to be uniformly expressed in terms of the causal relations among relevant data items. It is flexible in the sense that causes for one relation can be effects for another may be reflected on our knowledge representation scheme. The diagnosis mechanism is based on a probabilistic inferencing method. This probablistic diagnosis mechanism provides more general diagnosis than existing ones in that it accommodates multiple causes and takes complication among causes into account. These scheme and mechanism are applied to a typical example to demonstrate how our system works.

  • This research analyzed 168,010 cases of death of the aged over 65 from 244,867cases of death excluding 7 unknown age cases from 244,874 all age cases of death by using the death data of the National Statistical Office for 2007 to figure out factors affecting the quality of causes of death statistics of the aged and to suggest the ways of improving the quality of death statistics of the aged in korea. This research tried to derive factors affecting ill-defined cause of death category in acordance with WHO's guidelines and to find causes of lowering the accuracy of causes of death statistics of the aged. This research identified the problems of causes of death statistics of the aged by using both demographic characteristics such as sex, age, marital status, educational attainment, residential region, region size and factors of death items as independent variable to find causes of ill-defined cause of death of the aged. Logistic regression analysis was executed to calculate the hazard ratio about the ill-defined causes of death of the aged and multiple regression analysis was conducted to derive factors affecting the ill-defined cause of death by regional groups through using these independent variables such as the component ratio of over age 65, female death rates, doctors insitutions rate, medical institutions rate, attaching rates of death certificate by neighborhood. As a results of this research, R-code was the highest of ill-defined causes of death, accounting for 82.1%, and senility death(R54) of R-code was the highest, accounting for 91.2%. through subdivided order distribution of the ill-defined causes of death of the aged. As ill-defined causes of death by regional groups, attaching rates of death certificate by neighborhood was the most important factor(p<0.05) and also showed regression model's description with 83.8% ($R^2$=83.8%). Furthermore, Jeon-nam was the highest in the regional groups and these regions such as Je-ju, Jeon-buk, Chung-nam were not only attaching the death certificate by neighborhood but also were high at the rate of ill-defined causes of death. Therefore, this research found that both reconsideration about death certificate by neighborhood and education for doctors who write death certificate were needed the most.

  • This research investigates statistical characteristics of variable sampling size & interval(VSSI) X charts under two assignable causes. Algorithms for calculating the average run length(ARL) and average time to signal(ATS) of the VSSI X chart are proposed by employing Markov chain method. Extensive sensitivity analysis shows that the VSSI. X chart is superior to the VSS or VSI X chart as well as to the Shewhart X chart in statistical sense, even under two assignable causes.

  • The purpose of an accident analysis is to obtain accurate, objective information about the causes of accidents in order to prevent the incident from reoccurring. This study is concerned with the analysis of characteristics and causes for industrial accidents in Korean industry. For the purpose, from 1972 to 1994, statistics of industrial accidents are surveyed from the 'Analysis of industrial accidents' published in Ministry of Labor. The results show that industrial accident rates have fallen considerably since the late 1970's. Also, there are some patterns in the records of industrial accidents.

  • At downstream part of the hydraulic structures such as spiliway or drainage gate, jet flow can occur by gate opening. If stream bed is not hard or bed protection is not sufficient, scour hole will be formed due to high shear stress of the jet flow. We call this primary scour. Once the scour hole is formed, a vortex occurs in it and this vortex causes additional scour. We call this secondary scour. The primary scour proceeds to downstream together with flow direction but the secondary one proceeds to upstream direction opposite to it. If the secondary one continues and reaches to the hydraulic structure, it can undermine the bottom of hydraulic structure and this will lead to failure of structure itself. Thus, it is necessary to know the physical features of the vortex structure in a scour hole, which is the main mechanism of the secondary scour. This study deals with the characteristics of the vortex structure and its shear stress which causes the secondary scour.

  • Recently, higher speeds have been promoted in old overhead-lines. For high-speed operation in electric railways, increasing contact loss of the pantograph is one of the most important subjects. The contact loss causes power interruption and increases wear of contact strips and contact wires. In order to investigate the causes of contact loss and to work out effective improvement methods, theoretical analyses, experiments have been carried out. First of all, the wave propagating velocity (phase velocity) and characteristics of contact wire are one of the important indices for the current collecting performance. In this paper, mathematical formula arc derived for the prediction of the traveling wave velocity. The measured values in the experiment agree well with the theoretical predictions.

  • Dentists are known to be highly exposed to the musculoskeletal disorders (MSD). The present study investigated the prevalence of MSD among Korean dentists and association between their MSD and physical workload. In addition, detailed causes related to the physical workloads were identified in dental operation, and needs for improvement of dental instrument and environment were collected from Korean dentists. The standardized Nordic questionnaire was used to survey body troubles and three types of questionnaires were made to investigate the physical workloads, causes of the physical workloads and improvement priority of dental equipments, respectively. A total of 104 Korean dentists were participated in the survey. Neck trouble (82%) was the most prevalent in Korean dentists, and shoulder (68%) and low back trouble (56%) followed, while low back trouble was reported to be most frequent in previous studies. The body troubles were related to the physical workload of the corresponding body parts, although they were not associated with personal characteristics. Most Korean dentists selected 'to keep direct view inside patient's mouth' and 'no support of the hand with dental instruments' as the causes of awkward and strenuous work postures. They wanted design improvement for some equipment in their operating room such as operating light and arrangement of workplace.

  • This paper aims at the statistical analysis of electrical fire and classification of electrical fire causes to collect electrical fires data efficiently. Electrical fire statistics are produced to monitor the number and characteristics of fires attended by fire fighters, including the causes and effects of fire so that action can be taken to reduce the human and financial cost of fire. Electrical fires make up the majority of fires in Korea(including nearly 30% of total fires according to recent figures), The incorrect and biased knowledge for electrical fires changed the classification of certain types of fires, from non-electrical to electrical. It is convenient and required to develop the standardized form that makes, in the assessment of the cause of electrical fires, the fire fighters directly ticking the appropriate box on the fire report form or making an assessment of a text description. Therefore, it is highly recommended to develop electrical fire cause classification and electrical fire assessment on the fire statistics in order to categorize and assess electrical fires exactly. In this paper newly developed electrical fire cause classification structure, which is well-defined hierarchical structure so that there are not any relationship or overlap between cause categories, is suggested. Also fire statistics systems of foreign countries are introduced and compared.

  • Process fault diagnosis is a complicated matter because quality control problems can result from a variety of causes. These causes include problems with electrical components, mechanical components, human errors, job justification errors, and air conditioning influences. In order to make the system run smoothly with minimum delay, it is necessary to suggest heuristic remedies for the detected faults. Hence, this paper describes a heuristic methodology of fault diagnosis that is performed using statistical patterns generated by quality characteristics The proposed methodology is described briefly as follows: If a sample pattern generated by random variables is similar to the number of prototype patterns, the sample pattern may be matched by any prototype pattern among them to be resembled. This concept is based on the similarity between a sample pattern and the matched prototype pattern. The similarity is calculated as the weighted average of squared deviation, which is expressed as the difference between the relative values of standard normal distribution to be transformed by the observed values of quality characteristics in a sample pattern and the critical values of the corresponding ones in a matched prototype pattern.
