  • This paper describes an experimental study on ultrasonic welding of similar and dissimilar metals. There are optimum welding conditions which are found for welding of Al/Al and Al/Cu. It evaluated weldability using tensile test, SEM observation and EDX-ray analysis. Both ultrasonic welding of Al/Al and Al/Cu have amplitude as the variable factor. Al/Cu welding was examined again with welding time as variable factor to find the best conditions. The more welding time or amplitude increase, the better weldability. The optimum conditions for ultrasonic welding of Al/Al were formed at pressure 0.25 MPa, welding time 0.25 sec, amplitude 90%. Pressure 0.25 MPa, welding time 0.4 sec, amplitude 80% are optimized for Al/Cu ultrasonic metal welding and solid-state diffusion generated by ultrasonic vibration and frictional heat is confirmed at the welded interface.

  • Synthesis of carbon nanofibers on a metal substrate by an ethylene fueled inverse diffusion flame was observed. Stainless steel plates were used for the catalytic metal substrate. The effects of radial distance and residence time of the substrate were investigated. The role of hydrocarbon composition in the fuel was also viewed. Nanofibers with a diameter range of 30-70nm were found on the substrate. The carbon nanofibers were formed and grown in the region from 4 to 5.5mm from the central axis of a flame outside of the visible flame front in the radial direction. The minimum residence time required for the formation of carbon nanofibers were about 20 seconds, and over 60 seconds were required for the full-scale growth. The characteristic time of the formation of carbon nanofibers was much shorter than that of the substrate temperature growth. In this study, the variation in hydrocarbon composition had no significant effect on the formation and growth of the carbon nanofibers.

  • Cosmological shocks form as an inevitable consequence of gravitational collapse during the large scale structure formation and cosmic-rays (CRs) are known to be accelerated at collisionless shocks via diffusive shock acceleration (DSA). We have calculated the evolution of CR modified shocks for a wide range of shock Mach numbers and shock speeds through numerical simulations of DSA in 1D quasi-parallel plane shocks. The simulations include thermal leakage injection of seed CRs, as well as pre-existing, upstream CR populations. Bohm-like diffusion is assumed. We show that CR modified shocks evolve to time-asymptotic states by the time injected particles are accelerated to moderately relativistic energies (p/mc $\ge$ 1), and that two shocks with the same Mach number, but with different shock speeds, evolve qualitatively similarly when the results are presented in terms of a characteristic diffusion length and diffusion time. We find that $10^{-4} - 10^{-3}$ of the particles passed through the shock are accelerated to form the CR population, and the injection rate is higher for shocks with higher Mach number. The CR acceleration efficiency increases with shock Mach number, but it asymptotes to ${\~}50\%$ in high Mach number shocks, regardless of the injection rate and upstream CR pressure. On the other hand, in moderate strength shocks ($M_s {\le} 5$), the pre-existing CRs increase the overall CR energy. We conclude that the CR acceleration at cosmological shocks is efficient enough to lead to significant nonlinear modifications to the shock structures.

  • Experimental measurements of flame structure and soot characteristics were performed fur ethene inverse diffusion flames (IDF). IDF has been considered as the excellent flow field to study the incipient soot because soot particle do not experience the oxidation process. In this study, LIF image clarified the reaction zone of IDF with OH signal and PAH distribution. laser light scattering technique also identified the being of soot particle. To address the degree of soot maturing, C/H ratio and morphology of soot sample were investigated. From these measurements, the effect of flow residence time and temperature on soot inception could be suggested, and more details on soot characteristic in the IDF was determined according to fuel dilution and flame condition. The fuel dilution results in a decrease of temperature and enhancement of residence time, but the critical dilution mole fraction is existed for temperature not to effect on soot growth. Also, the soot inception evolved on the specific temperature and its morphology are independent of the fuel dilution ratio of fuel.

  • Fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) is a sophisticated and an accurate analytical technique used to study the diffusion of molecules in a solution at the single-molecule level. FCS is strongly affected by many factors such as the stability of the excitation power, photochemical processes, mismatch between the refractive indices, and variations in the cover glass thickness. We have studied FCS near the surface of a cover glass by using rhodamine 123 as a fluorescent probe and have observed that the surface has a strong influence on the measurements. The temporal autocorrelation of FCS decays with two characteristic times when the confocal detection volume is positioned near the surface of the cover glass. As the position of the detection volume is moved away from the surface, the FCS autocorrelation becomes one-component decaying; the characteristic time of the decay is the same as the faster-decaying component in the FCS autocorrelation near the surface. This observation suggests that the faster component can be attributed to the free diffusion of the probe molecules in the solution, while the slow component has its origin from the interaction between the probe molecules and the surface. We have characterized the surface contribution to the FCS measurements near the surface by changing the position of the detection volume relative to the surface. The influence of the surface on the diffusion of the probe molecules was monitored by changing the chemical properties of the surface. The surface contribution to the temporal autocorrelation of the FCS strongly depends on the chemical nature of the surface. The hydrophobicity of the surface is a major factor determining the surface influence on the free diffusion of the probe molecules near the surface.

  • At present, the target amount of demand-side management and investment cost of EE (Energy Efficiency) program, which consists of high-efficiency appliances, has been estimated simply by the diffusion function based on the real historical data in the past or last year. In the internal and external condition, the penetration amount of each appliance has been estimated by Bass diffusion model which is expressed by time and three coefficients. And enough acquisition of real historical data is necessary for reasonable estimation of coefficients. In energy efficiency, to estimate the target amount of demand-side management, the penetration amount of each appliance should be primarily forecasted by Bass diffusion model in Korea. On going programs, however, lightings, inverters, vending machine and motors have a insufficient real historical data which is a essential condition to forecast the penetration amount using a Bass diffusion model due to the short period of program progress. In other words, the forecast of penetration amount may not be exact, so that it is necessary for the method of forecast to apply improvement of method. In this paper, the penetration amount of high-efficiency appliances is forecasted by Bass, virtual Bass, Logistic and Lawrence & Lawton diffusion models to analyze the diffusion progress. And also, by statistic standards, each penetration is compared with historical data for model suitability by characteristic of each appliance. Based on the these result, in the forecast of penetration amount by diffusion model, the reason for error occurrence caused by simple application of diffusion model and preferences of each diffusion model far a characteristic of data are analyzed.

  • In this paper we study implicit-explicit (IMEX) methods combined with a semi-Lagrangian scheme to evaluate the prices of fixed strike arithmetic Asian options under jump-diffusion models. An Asian option is described by a two-dimensional partial integro-differential equation (PIDE) that has no diffusion term in the arithmetic average direction. The IMEX methods with the semi-Lagrangian scheme to solve the PIDE are discretized along characteristic curves and performed without any fixed point iteration techniques at each time step. We implement numerical simulations for the prices of a European fixed strike arithmetic Asian put option under the Merton model to demonstrate the second-order convergence rate.

  • The pn junction for solar cell was prepared on p-type Si wafer by the furnace using the $POCl_3$ and oxygen mixed precursor to research the characteristic of interface at pn junction. The sheet resistance was decreased in accordance with the increasing the diffusion process time for n-type doping on p-type Si wafer. The electron affinity at the interface in the pn junction was decreased with increasing the amount of n-type doping and the sheet resistance also decreased. Consequently, the drift current due to the generation of EHP increased because of low potential barrier. The efficiency and fill factor were increased at the solar cell with increasing the diffusion process time.

  • In the general manual feeder of an LED lighting assembly system, many workers are needed to supply parts to the main conveyor. The automatic feeder for modern automation lighting assembly systems consists of a completely automated feeding system and a magazine system that supplies the parts automatically. A standardized LED panel and diffusion cover is stacked in the cartridge of the magazine system. The structural safety of the automatic feeding system with regard to handling the load from the panels and covers stored in the cartridge should be guaranteed. LED convergency lighting modules are assembled using two LED panels and one diffusion cover in an automatic feeder. In this study, the structural safety and fatigue life of the automatic feeder and magazine were analyzed by considering the load generated in the automatically assembled LED convergency lighting system. In addition, the dynamic behavior of each auto-feeding system and magazine delivery system was visualized, and the working process was evaluated via dynamic simulation using a virtual engineering method. A tack time table for automatic feeding systems was derived by developing a virtual prototype.
