In this study, a method for CO reduction using char-coal combustions was developed with lignin and glycerin as combustion improvers. The relationship between CO emission and the combustion improvers was confirmed by measuring the CO concentration. The experiment to determine the combustion characteristics was conducted using glycerin, which shows high combustibility at low temperatures, impregnated with lignin, which has a specific surface area. The combustibility, volatility, and CO concentration were measured using thermo-gravimetric analysis(TGA), and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS). This study presents the optimal CO reduction ratio, which occurred when the combustible material contained a 20% blend of combustion improvers. This resulted in a 20-30% CO reduction rate compared to that achieved with normal char-coal.

The flame retardancy by the addition of clay was evaluated to present as the fundamental data to decrease the fire hazard of polymers and life losses. The flame retardancy was examined to increase flame retardancy and to decrease smoke yield of epoxy by the addition of clay such as montmorillonite. For this study, the experiments of flame retardancy were conducted as follows : the measurement of the limiting oxygen index(LOI), char yield, and smoke density. As MMT concentration increased, epoxy/MMT composite increased LOI and char yield with the decreased smoke density.
The influences of air staging on NOx emission and burnout of coal flames were investigated using 1MWth combustion test facility. The experiments showed that variation of overall excess air ratio led to a relatively higher NOx emission level for ${\lambda}=1.2.$ When air staging was applied to the combustion air, it was confirmed that a fuel rich primary combustion zone was established and unburned char was burened completely by mixing with the staged air supplied radially around the flame. The NOx emissions were redued by increasing the staged air flow rate, and staging air was suggested to be more than 40% of the total combustion air for the substantial NOx reduction.
The purpose of this study is to assess approaches to modeling coal gasification and combustion in general purpose CFD codes. Coal gasification and combustion involve complex multiphase flows and chemical reactions with strong influences of turbulence and radiation. CFD codes would treat coal particles as a discrete phase and gas species are considered as a continuous phase. An approach to modeling coal reaction in $FLUENT^{(R)}$, selected in this study as a typical commercial CFD code, was evaluated including its devolatilization, gas phase reactions, and char oxidation, turbulence, and radiation submodels. CFD studies in the literature were reviewed to show the uncertainties and limitations of the results. Therefore, the CFD analysis gives useful information, but the results should be carefully interpreted based on understandings on the uncertainties associated with the modelings of coal gasification and combustion.
The flame retardancy was evaluated to present as the fundamental data to decrease the fire hazard of polymers and life losses according to the addition of clay. The combustion characteristics were examined to increase flame retardancy and to decrease smoke yield of epoxy by the addition of clay such as montmorillonite in this study. For this study, the experiments of flame retardancy were conducted the measurement of the limiting oxygen index (LOI), char yield, and smoke density. As MMT concentration increased, LOI and char yield increased. This result showed that the flame retardancy of epoxy/MMT composite was improved. On the contrary, smoke density increased.
The aim of this paper is to analyze combustion characteristics of treated woods by fire retardants which are prepared by several borate and phosphate compound solutions. The combustion characteristics for flame retardant treated wood were carried out using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) to measure their combustion heat and flame retardant test using cone-calorimeter. The result of TGA and flame retardant test showed that single chemical solution affected the char forming and flame delay. The mixed retardants solutions was believed to be related to the efficacy and property of single chemical. The retention value and concentration of the retardants also affected the performance of fire retardant treated woods. The fire retardants FR1 and FR2 satisfied the requirement of The 3 Grade of Korean building codes.

Four coal sources that had different ash contents were evaluated in a drop tube furnace (DTF). Combustion experiments were conducted by using several sources with different particle sizes and excess air ratios under air-staging conditions to determine the optimized combustion conditions of high-ash coal, with an emphasis on the combustion efficiency and NOx emissions. The results show that the higher ash content results in a large amount of carbon remaining unburned, and that this effect is dominant when the largest particle size is used. Furthermore, the ash content of coal does affect the Char-NOx concentration, which decreases with the particle size. The results of this study suggest that an air-staged system can be useful to reduce the NOx emissions of high-ash coal and that control of the air stoichiometric ratio of the primary combustion zone (SR1) is effective for reducing NOx emissions, especially by considering unburned carbon contents.
The experiment was designed to compare the char combustion kinetics of pulverized Indonesia coals commonly utilized in Korea power plants. The reaction rate of coal char has been formulated using the external and internal effectiveness factors to describe the diffusion effect quantitatively. The Random Pore Model (RPM) was used for applying internal specific surface area as a function of carbon conversion ratio. Reaction rate was obtained from reaction time using the Wire Heating Reactor (WHR) which can heat and measure the char particle temperature at the same time. BET and TGA were used to obtain physical properties such as internal specific surface area and structural parameter. Three kinds of Indonesia Sub-bituminous coals "BARAMULTI, ENERGYMAN, AGM" were used in order to derive the activation energy and pre-exponential factor. The results of this study showed that the effect of internal diffusion than that of external diffusion is the dominant as comparison of kinetics was reflected in external and internal effectiveness factors. For three kinds of coal char, finally, activation energy of intrinsic kinetics indicates 110~118 kJ/mol.
The present study is described of the flame structure of one-dimensional, flat, premixed, laminar, coal-air flame with some addition of methane for the flame stability. A low pressure burner operating at a combustion pressure of 0.3 arm was employed in order to extend the reaction zone. Predicted results from the models considered in the present study are compared with experimental results. Comparisons are included gas temperatures, species concentrations, char analysis and measured burning velocity. Among the models, Model II $I^{*}$-d, which specified devolatilization rate constants and a char surface area factor S=4, resulted in good agreement within the present experimental ranges. The results of char analysis suggest that the extent of the reaction occurring on the panicle might be underestimated in the model so that the char surface area should be increased. A value of 4 for this factor was given by sensitivity analysis of change in char surface area. Again, model II $I^{*}$-d gave satisfactory predictions of burning velocities over most of the experimental range studied. It has been clearly shown that the particle diameter appreciably affects the rates of devolatilisation and char oxidation through the effects of thermal lag and volumetric reactive surface area, consequently laminar burning velocity.ity.

This paper describes the evaluation of kinetic parameters for pyrolysis and carbon char oxidation of residual oil. The non-isothermal pyrolysis of residual oil was carried out with TGA (Thermo-Gravimetric Analyzer) at heating rate of 2, 5, 10 and $20^{\circ}C/min$ up to $800^{\circ}C$ under N2 atmosphere. The first order and nth order pyrolysis models were used to fit the experimental data, and the nth order model was turned out to follow the experimental data more precisely than the first order model. For carbon char oxidation experiment, TGA and four heating rates used in pyrolysis experiment were also adapted. The kinetic parameters for the residual carbon char particle were obtained with three char oxidation model, that is, volume reaction, grain and random pore model. Among them, the random pore model described the char oxidation behaviour quite well, compared to other two models. The non-linear regression method was used to obtain kinetic parameters for both pyrolysis and carbon char oxidation of residual oil.
