  • We present somple block methods for blind maximal ratio combining (MRC) based on a maximum likelihood (ML) principle and finite alphabet properties (FAP) inherent in digital communication systems. The methods can provide accurate estimates of channel parameters even with a small subset of data, thus realizing nearly perfect combining. The channel parameters of diversity branches and the data sequence are estimated simultaneously by using an alternating projection technique. Two different methods, that is, (1) Joint combining and data sequence estimation(JC-DSE) method and (2) Pre-combining and blind phase estimation (PC-BPE) method are presented. Efficient initiallization schemes that can assure the convergence to the global optimum are also presented. Simulation results demonstrate the performance of two methods on the symbol error rate (SER) and the estimated accuracy of the channel parameters.

  • As a channel of a DS-CDMA system is shared among several users, the receivers face the problem of MAI. Also the multipath scenario leads to ISI. Both components are undesired, but unlike the additive noise process, which is usually completely unpredictable, their space-time structure helps to estimate and remove them. This paper investigates a DS-CDMA system with a fading multipath channel. The investigations have been separated into a channel estimation part and a reception part. In the first part, the estimation of multipath parameters(DOA, TOA) are considered, space-time beamformers(Decorrelating, Match-Filter, Wiener-Hopf) are performed in the second part. To assess many different estimation techniques and beamformers, the simulation compared with theoretical values is performed.

  • In this paper, we first analyze the differences of underwater acoustic (UWA) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems and conventional terrestrial OFDM system, and give a simple introduction of the backgrounds. By considering the real UWA channel environments, the measured channel data is used to generate the UWA channel model and calculate the relative parameters for underwater OFDM systems. Practical least square (LS) based channel estimation with linear interpolation are adopted to obtain the channel state information (CSI) at receiver side. As multi-input multi-output (MIMO) processing techniques, Alamouti code is implemented and evaluated to perform for space time block coding (STBC) and space frequency block coding (SFBC) for UWA OFDM systems with the MIMO configuration of $2{\times}1$, at the same time, $1{\times}2$ maximum ratio combining (MRC) is performed for the purpose of comparison. The simulation results show that, with perfect channel estimation, SFBC failed to work duo to the serious frequency selectivity of UWA channel environments. When the practical channel estimation is applied, in the case of STBC, the proposed 4-column pilot pattern gives better performance about 7dB than SISO system.

  • Recently, much research on blind estimation of the interleaver parameters has been performed by using Gauss-Jordan elimination to find the linearity of the block channel code. When using Gauss-Jordan elimination, the input data to be calculated needs to run as long as the square multiple of the number of the interleaver period. Thus, it has a limit in estimating the interleaver parameters with insufficient input data. In this paper, we introduce and analyze an estimation algorithm which can estimate interleaver parameters by using only 15 percent of the input data length required in the above algorithm. The shorter length of input data to be calculated makes it possible to estimate the interleaver parameters even when limited data is received. In addition, a 80 percent reduction in the number of the interleaver period candidates increases the efficiency of analysis. It is also feasible to estimate both the type and size of the interleaver and the type of channel coding.

  • Spectrum sharing in centrally controlled cognitive radio (CR) networks has been widely studied, however, research on channel access for distributively controlled individual cognitive users has not been fully characterized. This paper conducts an analysis of random channel access of cognitive users controlled in a distributed manner in a CR network. Based on the proposed estimation method, each cognitive user can estimate the current channel condition by using its own Markov-chain model and can compute its own blocking probability, collision probability, and forced termination probability. Using the proposed scheme, CR with distributed control (CR-DC), CR devices can make self-controlled decisions based on the status estimations to adaptively control its system parameters to communicate better.

  • The problem of sinusoidal parameter estimation at two channels with common frequency in white Gaussian noise is addressed. By making use of the linear prediction property, an iterative linear least squares (LLS) algorithm for accurate frequency estimation is devised. The remaining parameters are then determined according to the LLS fit with the use of the frequency estimate. It is proven that the variance of the frequency estimate achieves Cram$\acute{e}$r-Rao lower bound at sufficiently small noise conditions.

  • In this paper it was discussed and compared measured loudspeaker impedance curve with ones reconstructed by TS parameters estimated using four kinds of parameter estimation methods developed in frequency domain. Frequency dependent parameters were introduced and derived using least square error minimization technique. For known dynamic mass TS parameter estimation methods were reviewed and also proved non-uniqueness of these parameters by simulation method. Minimum phase transformation was adopted to derive phase information from magnitude of loudspeaker electrical impedance curve measured by one channel analyzer.

  • This study presents techniques for the estimation of parameters in flood routing method of natural channel.. The Muskingum routing method is the most widely used method of hydrologic stream channel routing. In this paper, Genetic Algorithm and Fletcher-Powell method is applied to determine parameters(K and x) of the Muskingum routing method. The results of the approach shows that Genetic Algorithm method can be one of methods to determine parameters of the Muskingum routing method. Based on the analysis for estimated parameters and the comparison with the results from observed data, the applicability of Genetic Algorithm is verified.

  • Resently there have been increasing interests in adaptive identification and control of flexible structures. In this paper, vector channel lattice filters and their applications to parameter identification of flexible structures are studied. Numerical examples are given to show its performace to estimate the natural frequencies of 5-mass system. It is observed that vector channel lattice filter convetges quickly and identifies modal frequencies even when some of them is unobservable for some measurements. Experimental results demonstrated the ability of the lattice filter to identify the natural frequencies and the damping ratios of cantilever beam and pipe.

  • In this paper, we present a novel blind adaptive multiuser detector structure and three robust recursive filters to improve the performance in CDMA environments: Sigma point kalman filter (SPKF), particle filter (PF), and Gaussian mixture sigma point particle filter (GMSPPF). Our proposed robust recursive filters have superior performance over a conventional extended Kalman filter (EKF). The proposed multiuser detector algorithms initially use Kalman prediction form to estimated channel parameters, and unknown data symbol be predicted. Second, based on this predicted data symbol, the robust recursive filters (e.g., GMSPPF) is a refined estimation of joint multipaths and time delays. With these estimated multipaths and time delays, data symbol detection is carried out (Kalman correction form). Computer simulations show that the proposed algorithms outperform the conventional blind multiuser detector with the EKF. Also we can see it provides a more viable means for tracking time-varying amplitudes and time delays in CDMA communication systems, compared to that of the EKF for near-far ratio of 20 dB. For this reason, it is believed that the proposed channel estimators can replace well-known filter such as the EKF.
