  • We examine hedge strategies that use Won-dollar futures to hedge the price risk of the Won-dollar exchange rate. We employ the naive hedge model, minimum variance hedge model and bivariate ECT-ARCH(1) model as hedge instruments, and analyze their hedge performances. The sample period covers from January 2, 2001 to December 31, 2002 with sub-samples such as daily, weekly, bi-weekly prices of the Won-dollar futures and cash. The important findings may be summarized as follows. First, there is no significant difference in hedge ratio between the risk minimum variance model and bivariate ECT-ARCH(1) model that controls for the cointegration relationship of the Won-dollar futures and cash. Second, hedge performance of the naive model and minimum variance model with constant hedge ratios is not far behind that of bivariate ECT-ARCH(1) model with time-varying hedge ratios. This results imply that investors are encouraged to use the minimum variance hedge model to hedge Won-dollar exchange rate with Won-dollar futures. Third, hedge performance and effectiveness of each model is also analyzed with respect to hedge period appear to be greater over long than over the short period. This evidence supports the hypothesis that futures prices would have more time to respond to the greater cash price changes over the longer holding period, leading to an improved hedge performance.

  • In the Korea stock market, individual investors have perceived stock as short arbitrage investment, not long-term investment strategy. In order to reinforce stock market transparency and soundness, it is important to enforce the measures for stock market management. Especially, stock market event caused by financial policy can be given individual investors negative information regarding a stock trading. Thus, it is a need for investigating whether comprehensive review of listing eligibility is influenced on individual investors' responses and stock behaviors in respect of effectiveness. The purpose of this study to examine the relations between such stock market management and transitional aspect of individual investors' trading types and response on the based of pre- and post-event occurrence. Using an dataset of user's text messages on 9 firms posted on the firm-based social media (i.e., Naver, Daum, Paxnet) over the period 2009 to 2014. And we performed text-clustering and topic modeling according to keywords for classifying into investors group and non-investors groups and two types of investors were categorized depending on main topic transition by event windows in Comprehensive review of listing eligibility. The results indicated that a variety of stockholders existed in the stock. And the ratio of non-investors group was on the decrease, on the other hand, the proportion of investors group veer onto the side of pre-pattern after comprehensive review of listing eligibility. • Fostering trusting belief in financial transactions is a challenging task in Internet banking services. Authenticated Certificate had been regarded as an effective method to guarantee the trusting belief for online transactions. However, previous research claimed that this method has some loopholes for such abusers as hackers, who intend to attack the financial accounts of innocent transactors in Internet. Two types of methods have been suggested as alternatives for securing user identification and activity in online financial services. Control transparency uses information over the transaction process to verify and to control the transactions. Outcome feedback, which refers to the specific information about exchange outcomes, provides information over final transaction results. By using these two methods, financial service providers can send signals to involved parties about the robustness of their security mechanisms. These two methods-control transparency and outcome feedback-have been widely used in the IS field to enhance the quality of IS services. In this research, we intend to verify that these two methods can also be used to reduce risks and to increase the security protections in online banking services. The purpose of this paper is to empirically test the effects of the control transparency and the outcome feedback on the risk perceptions in Internet banking services. Our assumption is that these two methods-control transparency and outcome feedback-can reduce perceived risks involved with online financial transactions, while increasing perceived trust over financial service providers. These changes in user attitudes can increase the level of user satisfactions, which may lead to the increased user loyalty as well as users' willingness to pay for the financial transactions. Previous research in IS suggested that the increased level of transparency on the process and the result of transactions can enhance the information quality and decision quality of IS users. Transparency helps IS users to acquire the information needed to control the transaction counterpart and thus to complete transaction successfully. It is also argued that transparency can reduce the perceived transaction risks in IS usage. Many IS researchers also argued that the trust can be generated by the institutional mechanisms. Trusting belief refers to the truster's belief for the trustee to have attributes for being beneficial to the truster. Institution-based trust plays an important role to enhance the probability of achieving a successful outcome. When a transactor regards the conditions crucial for the transaction success, he or she considers the condition providers as trustful, and thus eventually trust the others involved with such condition providers. In this process, transparency helps the transactor complete the transaction successfully. Through the investigation of these studies, we expect that the control transparency and outcome feedback can reduce the risk perception on transaction and enhance the trust with the service provider. Based on a theoretical framework of transparency and institution-based trust, we propose and test a research model by evaluating research hypotheses. We have conducted a laboratory experiment in order to validate our research model. Since the transparency artifact(control transparency and outcome feedback) is not yet adopted in online banking services, the general survey method could not be employed to verify our research model. We collected data from 138 experiment subjects who had experiences with online banking services. PLS is used to analyze the experiment data. The measurement model confirms that our data set has appropriate convergent and discriminant validity. The results of testing the structural model indicate that control transparency significantly enhances the trust and significantly reduces the risk perception of online banking users. The result also suggested that the outcome feedback significantly enhances the trust of users. We have found that the reduced risk and the increased trust level significantly improve the level of service satisfaction. The increased satisfaction finally leads to the increased loyalty and willingness to pay for the financial services.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of implementation of the healthcare accreditation system on patient safety, quality of medical care, organization culture and management performance of convalescent hospitals. Ten hospitals were selected at random from among 36 convalescent hospitals in Daegu that had obtained accreditation until September 2015. To accomplish this, hospital staff were surveyed from 15 February to 25 March, 2016 using a questionnaire with 253 objects. We investigated how the healthcare accreditation system has influenced patient safety, service quality, organization culture and performance of hospital management. The change in the treatment support system showed the highest score of 3.93 among quality change and medical service items, while that of personnel source culture showed the highest score of 3.78 points among organization culture items, and that of internal process view, study and growth view showed the highest score of 3.71 among management performance items. Multiple regression analysis revealed that factors positively changing hospital management performance were nurses, employees and managers, basic value systems, organization culture, personnel source culture, open system culture, hierarchical culture, and production oriented culture. The quality of patient safety and medical care was positively influenced by changes in the quality of convalescent hospitals after implementation of the healthcare accreditation system. However, among the four types of organizational culture, the financial perspective was relatively low compared to other perspectives.

  • Purpose - The structure of retailing has changed as retailers develop markets in response to business environment changes. This study aims to analyze the general situation of retailers in order to predict future global strategy using case studies of overseas expansion strategy and the Metro Group's global strategy. Research design, data, and methodology - The backgrounds to the new retail business model and retailer classification are analyzed as theoretical data. In addition, the key success point of the Metro Group's "cash and carry" strategy is analyzed as is the Metro Group's global CFAR (collaborative planning, forecasting, and replenishment) strategy. Finally, the plan for cooperation and precise forecasting under the Metro Group's supply chain management are analyzed from the promotion environment viewpoint. Related materials analyzed included the 2012 annual report, the Metro Group's web page, and a video interview with the executive in charge of global strategy and the new market development department. Some data were revised to avoid disrupting essential aspects of the case studies. Results - The important finding was that the Metro Group could be a world-class retail company with its successful global expansion strategy. The Metro Group's global strategy's primary goal is to have a leading business position in Eastern and Western Europe. The "cash and carry" strategy is highest priority in its overseas expansion strategy. Moreover, the Metro Group has standardized product planning capacity, which could be applied in various countries with different structural and cultural backgrounds. This is the main reason that the Metro Group could rapidly become successful in the Eastern Europe and Asian markets through its structural overseas expansion strategies. In addition, the Metro Group emphasizes the importance of supply chain management. Conclusions - First, retailers should create additional value through utilizing the domestic market, market power, and economies of scale to launch a global strategy to maximize benefits from diversification. Second, the political, economic, and cultural background of the target country needs to be understood to successfully implement the overseas expansion strategy. Third, the main factor of successful cooperation with a local partner is how quickly the company gains total understanding of the business resources and core competence of its partner. All organizations should focus on the achievement of goals in order to successfully operate the partnership. Fourth, retailers should improve their business, financial and organizational structure. Moreover, the work processes and company culture should also be improved to respond strongly in the competitive global market. Fifth, the essential point of a successful retail business is the control capacity of its branding and format. The retailer could avoid forecasting errors through supply chain management by perfectly distributing the actual amount of its inventory. In addition, the risks along the supply chain are effectively shared between the supply chain partners. Finally, the central tendency of the market is to gain in strength with this taking place across all parts of the business.

  • We examine the relationship between the trading activities of Korea Stock Price Index (KOSPI) 200 futures contract and its underlying stock market volatility for about six years from May 1996 when the futures contract was introduced. The trading activities of the futures contracts are proxied by the volume and open interest, which are divided into expected and unexpected portions by using the previous data. The daily, intradilay, and overnight cash volatility is estimated by the GJR-GARCH model. We find a positive contemporaneous relationship between the intradaily stock market volatility and the unexpected futures volume while the relationship between the volatility and expected futures volume is weakly negative or non-existent. We also find that the unexpected futures volume strongly causes intradaily cash volatility. On the other hand, the overnight cash volatility causes the unexpected futures volume. The impulse responses between these variables are all positive. The result implies that during a trading time futures trading tends to increase the cash volatility while the unexpected overnight changes in cash volatility tends to increase the futures trading activities. We, however, find no association between the cash volatility and futures maturities.

  • The changes in construction business have impact on overall operation of construction companies. Poor business of construction companies following a s low industrial cycle could have broader implications and influences on the industry. Since a construction project involves various stakeholders including public organizations, financial institutions and households, a downturn in construction industry might lead to significant economic loss. In this regard, it is meaningful to examine the relationship between changes in construction business cycles and insolvency of construction companies. This study conducts an empirical analysis of the relationship between construction business cycles and how much they affect operation of construction companies. To this end, KMV model was used to estimate probability of bankruptcy, which represents business condition of a construction company. To examine construction business cycles, investment amount for different construction types-residential, non-residential, and construction work-was used as a variable. Based on the investment amount, VECM was applied and the analysis results suggested that construction companies should put priority on diversifying project portfolio. In addition, it was shown that once a construction company becomes unstable in business operation, it is hard to recover even when the market condition turns for the better. This suggests that, to improve business operation of a construction company, internal capacity-building is as important as the market condition and other external circumstances.

  • Industry structure and environment of the domestic bank have been changed by an influx of large foreign-banks and advanced financial products when the currency crisis erupted in Korea. In a competitive environment, accurate forecasts of changes and tendencies are essential for the survival and development. Forecast of whether to approve loan applications for customer or not is an important matter because that is related to profit generation and risk management on the bank. Therefore, this paper proposes the method to improve forecast accuracy of loan underwriting. Processes in experiments are as follows. First, we select the predictor variables which affect significantly to the result of loan underwriting by correlation analysis and feature selection technique, and then cluster the customers by the 2-Step clustering technique based on selected variables. Second, we find the most accurate forecasting model for each clustering by applying LR, NN and SVM. Finally, we compare the forecasting accuracy of the proposed method with the forecasting accuracy of existing application way.
