  • In the preparation of hydroxyapatite(HAp)/gelatin(GEL) nanocomposite, GEL matrix was modified by the introduction of chondroitin sulfate(ChS) to obtain a strongly organized composite body. The formation reaction of the HAp/GEL-ChS nanocomposite was then investigated via XRD, DT/TGA, FT-IR, TEM and SEM. The organic-inorganic interaction between HAp nanocrystallites and GEL molecules was confirmed from DT/TGA and FT-IR. According to the DT/TGA results, the exothermal temperature zone between 300 and $550^{\circ}C$ showed an additional peak temperature that indicated the decomposition of the combined organics of the GEL and ChS. From the FT-IR analysis, calcium phosphate(Ca-P) was covalently bound with the GEL macromolecules modified by ChS. From TEM and ED, the matrix of the GEL-ChS molecules was mineralized by HAp nanocrystallites and the dense dried nanocomposite body was confirmed from SEM micrographs.

  • Hydroxyapatite powder was injected into the tooth after decayed tooth clinic. The microstructure of tooth was observed after a tooth extraction in the body. The hydroxyapatite powder was stiffened and the junction of hydroxyapatite powder and tooth was observed. The Ca/P atomic ratio of hydroxyapatite-tooth boundary was higher than hydroxyapatite matrix. And microhardness of hydroxyapatite matrix was 92.4 Hv. The junction of hydroxyapatite powder and tooth was due to the $Ca^{2+}$ ion shift of hydroxyapatite or the firm waxy body was due to setting of hydroxyapatite powder.

  • In order to increase the wettability between ceramic fiber and metal matrix, ceramic fibers are generally coated with metal. In this paper, we examined how the nickel layers coated on continuous graphite fiber to increase the wettability are affected with variation applied pressure. In order to examine the behavior of nickel layer with variation of applied pressure, microstructure and nickel mapping of composites were investigated with SEM, and tensile properties of the composite were tested with UTM. As the applied pressure increases, nickel layers were resolved into the aluminum matrix and ultimate tensile strength of the composite decreased.

  • To investigate an effect of phase separation on precipitation characteristics of ZnS microcrystals in ma-trix glass ZnS doped borosilicate glasses for nonlinear optical applications were prepared by melting and pre-cipitation process. ZnS dopant contributed to phase separation promotion which increased the phase separa-tion of the matrix glass within immiscibility region. It was also found that ZnS as phase separation promoter showed a similar contribution for some selected glass compositions in miscibility region. The precipitation of ZnS microcrystals occurred in thephase separable glass compoitions. The radius of ZnS microcrystals in-creased with increasing the heat treatment temperature and Na2O contents of matrix glass composition. The ZnS particle sizes estimated by effective mass approximation ranged from about 30 to 80${\AA}$ It was suf-ficiently small to show quantum confinement effect.

  • The most widely known form of multifunctional aircraft structure is smart structures for structural health monitoring (SHM). The aim is to provide automated systems whose purposes are to identify and to characterize possible damage within structures by using a network of actuators and sensors. Unfortunately, environmental and operational variability render many of the proposed damage detection methods difficult to successfully be applied. In this paper, an original robust damage detection approach using output-only vibration data is proposed. It is based on independent component analysis and matrix perturbation analysis, where an analytical threshold is proposed to get rid of statistical assumptions usually performed in damage detection approach. The effectiveness of the proposed SHM method is demonstrated numerically using finite element simulations and experimentally through a conformal load-bearing antenna structure and composite plates instrumented with piezoelectric ceramic materials.

  • To produce fine structure with uniform surface of barrier ribs in PDP, acid etching process has been used in manufacture process. It is necessary to understand the mechanism of etching, particularly on the interface of ceramic fillers and matrix glass. We investigated the effect of ceramic fillers (ZnO, $Al_{2}O_3$) on the microstructure of borate glass system to find an etching mechanism of barrier ribs. The harrier ribs was etched with a several steps, dissolving a small amount of residual glass, taking out alumina fillers, and removing a cluster type of ZnO fillers and glass matrix.

  • Compacts of mixed SiO2-Si powder were liquid phase sintered at 145$0^{\circ}C$ for up to 60 min in a hydrogen atmosphere. In contrast to the conventional microstructures of liquid phase sintered materials, the specimens showed that the solid phase of SiO2 formed a matrix while the liquid phase of Si was the dispersed in the solid matrix. The dispersion of liquid Si pockets was attributed to the high wetting angle of liquid Si on solid SiO2. Because of relatively high solubility of SiO2 in liquid Si at 145$0^{\circ}C$, SiO2 particles accommodated their shape via a solution-reprecipitation process. The liquid Si pockets grew by coalescing with their neighbour pockets. In the latter stage of the sintering, plate-shape grains appeared in the liquid Si pockets. The grains were SiO2 phase precipitated from the liquid Si which was oversaturated with oxygen during cooling to room temperature. By the formation and subsequent removal of the gaseous SiO phase due to the reaction between SiO2 and Si, the specimens became porous.

  • This paper presents a new process for producing SiC fiber-SiC matrix(SiC/SiC) composites by reaction sintering. The processing strategy for the fabrication of the SiC/SiC composites involves the following: (1) infiltration of the SiC fiber fabric using a slurry consisting of Si and C precursors, (2) stacking the slurry-infiltrated SiC fiber fabric at room temperature, (3) cross-linking the stacked composites, (4) pyrolysis of the stacked composites, and (5) hot-pressing of the pyrolyzed composites. It was possible to obtain dense SiC/SiC composites with relative densities of >96% and a typical flexural strength of ${\sim}400$ MPa.

  • SiC fiber reinforced $Si_3N_4$ matrix composites combined with electrical conductive phases of carbon fiber and WC powder fabricated by hot pressing at 1773K. The ability to predict fracture in the ceramic matrix composites was evaluated by measuring simultaneous load-deflection and electrical resistanc difference-deflection curves in four point bending tests. The changes in electrical resistance differences closely corresponded to the fracture behavior of the composites. Different electrical conductive phases are suited to predicting different stages and rates of fracture. These obsevations how that it is possible to perform "in situ" fracture detection in ceramic composites.
