Soils are natural granular materials whose mechanical properties differ according to the size and composition of the particles, so soils exhibit an obvious scale effect. Traditional soil mechanics is based on continuum mechanics, which can not reflect the impact of particle size on soil mechanics. On that basis, a matrix-reinforcing-particle cell model is established in which the reinforcing particles are larger-diameter sand particles and the matrix comprises smaller-diameter bentonite particles. Since these two types of particles deform differently under shear stress, a new shear-strength theory under direct shear that considers the stress concentration and bypass phenomena of the matrix is established. In order to verify the rationality of this theory, a series of direct shear tests with different reinforcing particle diameter and volume fraction ratio are carried out. Theoretical analysis and experimental results showed that the interaction among particles of differing size and composition is the basic reason for the size effect of soils. Furthermore, the stress concentration and bypass phenomena of the matrix enhance the shear strength of a soil, and the volume ratio of reinforcing particles has an obvious impact on the shear strength. In addition, the newly proposed shear-strength theory agrees well with experimental values.
This experiment was carried out to investigate the ovarian responses of the ovulation point, ovarian weight and size, the number of ovarian follicles and collected embryos, and to study the effects of the developmental stages (oocytes, 2-4 cell. 8-16 cell and morulae), additional levels of Ficoll (0, 15, 30%) on the survival rate (FDA-test) of rat embryos frozen in vitrification solution (20% glycerol + 10% ethylene glycol + 10% sucrose). Sunanarized results was as follows; 1. The mean ovulation point per head was 7, and the weight of ovaries was 0.03g. The size of ovary was 5.9 mm(L) and 4.6 mm(W), and the number of ovarian follicles over and below 2 mm was 4.7 and 8.7, respectively. The number of the collected embryos per head was 5.5 (79%). 2. 2. The FDA score of embryos frozen in 20 G 10 E 10 S without Ficoll was 2.8 (oocyte), 2.6 (2-4 cell), 3.9 (8-16 cell) and 3.6 (morula), respectively. However, there were no significant differences among treatments. 3. The FDA score of embryos frozen in 20 G 10 E 10 S with 15% Ficoll was 3.4 (oocyte), 4.0 (2-4 cell), 4.7 (8-16 cell) and 4.8 (morulae), respectively (P>0.05). 4. The FDA score of embryos frozen in 20 G 10 E 10 S with 30 % Ficoll was 3.7 (oocyte), 3.2 (2-4 cell), 4.4 (8-16 cell) and 4.4 (morulae), respectively (P>0.05). 5. As shown in the above results, the higher survival rate was obtained in the treatment of 15% Ficoll than that of 30%. And the survival rate (FDA-test)of the oocytes and 2-4 cell stages of the rat embryos was lower than that of 8~16 cell and morulae stages. It was considered that 8-16 cell and morulae could be available for the successful freezing by vitrification of rat embryos with 15% Ficoll except for oocytes.
The Precesses for leaf development in dicotyledonous plants are surprisingly complex, while the mechanism of controlling and coordinating them is poorly understood. To characterize the fundamental features of the leaf development of Arabidopsis, we first attempted to isolate mutants that alter leaf morphology. Here, leaf morphological mutant of Arabidopsis, lanceolatal (lan1) which has small and narrow leaves have isolated and characterized. To clarify the function of LAN1 in organ development, we characterized lan1-7 mutant using an anatomical and genetic approach. The lan1-7 mutant had reduced size of foliage leaves and reduced dimensions of stems. A reduction both in cell size and in cell number was evident at the cellular level in the lan1 mutant, revealing that LAN1 gene appears to affect cell division at an earlier stage and cell elongation throughout the development of leaf primordia. from the analysis of heterogeneous plant with lan1 mutation and 35S-AG transgenic plant, AG gene is revealed to regulate leaf morphology under the control of 35S promoter. Thus, MADS-box gene was revealed to have some relationship to that of LAN1 gene at certain stage in leaf development processes.

Abstract. This research was conducted to figure out the optimal size of the plug cell and seedling raising period in 'Nongwoo' and 'Nonghyeop' cultivars. In the first experiment on effect of plug cell size on growth of squash, seedlings were transplanted into hydroponic cultivation beds at different growing stages: Those in 32-cell trays with 3-4 true leaves at 25 days after sowing, those in 50-cell trays with 2 true leaves at 15 days after sowing, those in 105-cell trays just before a true leaf development, and those in 162-cell trays with only cotyledons at 8 days after sowing. In the second experiment on effect of seedling raising period on growth of squash, it was conducted to have different sowing dates. But the same transplanting date, based on the results of Experiment 1, and compared the differences in growth and fruit productivity as affected by plug cell size in the same way with experiment 1 including the cultivars and environmental conditions. After setting the transplanting date in advance, the number of days for sowing were calculated back for each treatment. In the first experiment, plant height was the greatest in 105-cell trays followed by 162, 50 and 32-cell trays in both cultivars. The best fruit quality was found in different treatments depending on the cultivars, although it was the lowest in 32-cell trays in both cultivars. The fruit quality was not significantly different among those from cell sizes. Therefore, when raising seedlings in 105-cell trays, the period of raising seedlings can be shortened as compared with the conventional 32-cell trays, and this change could reduce the workforce required for growing and transplanting seedlings. In the second experiment, after transplanting, shoot height and leaf width in the first measurement in both cultivars were greater in the 32-cell treatment. However, the last measurement after four weeks showed no significant difference in plant height, but significantly greatest leaf width in the smallest cell treatment, even as compared with that in 32-cell treatment. In case of 'Nongwoo', length and weight of the first harvested fruit showed the highest values in the treatment of 105-cell trays. In case of 'Nonghyeop' the 162-cell treatment along with the 105-cell treatment showed greatest length and weight of the first fruits. From these results, zucchini plug seedlings can be raised in plug trays with reduced cell sizes than the conventional 32-cell trays with improved fruit productivity.

Statement of problem. The success of osseointegration can be enhanced with an implant that has improved surface characteristics. Anodic oxidation is one of the surface modifying method to achieve osseointegration. Voltage of anodic oxidation can change surface characteristics and cell activity Purpose. This study was performed to evaluate MG63 cell responses such as affinity, proliferation and to compare surface characteristics of anodic oxidized titanium in various voltage. Material and method. The disks for cell culture were fabricated from grade 3 commercially pure titanium,1 m in thickness and 12 mm in diameter. Surfaces of 4 different roughness were prepared. Group 1 had a machined surface, used as control. Group 2 was anodized under 220 V, group 3 was anodized under 300 V and group 4 was anodized under 320 V. The microtopography of specimens was observed by scanning electron microscope (JSM-840A, JEOL, Japan) and atomic force microscope(Autoprobe CP, Park Scientific Instrument, USA). The surface roughness was measured by confocal laser scanning microscope(Pascal, LSM5, Zeiss, Germany). The crystal structure of the titanium surface was analyzed with x-ray diffractometer(D8 advanced, Broker, Germany). MG63 osteoblast-like cells were cultured on these specimens. The cell morpholgy was observed by field emission electron microscope(Hitachi S-4700, Japan). The cell metabolic and proliferative activity was evaluated by MTT assay Results and conclusion. With in limitations of this in vitro study, the following conclusions were drawn. 1. In anodizing titanium surface, we could see pores which did not show in control group. In higher anodizing voltage, pore size was increased. 2. In anodizing titanium surface, we could see anatase. In higher anodizing voltage, thicker oxide layer increased crystallinity(anatase, anatase and rutile mixed). 3. MG63 cells showed more irregular, polarized and polygonal shape and developed more lamellipodi in anodizing group as voltage increased. 4. The activity of cells in MTT assay increased significantly in group 3 and 4 in comparison with group 1 and 2. However, there was no difference between group 3 and 4 at P<0.05. Proliferation of MG63 cells increased significantly in pore size($3-5.5{\mu}m$) of group 3 and 4 in comparison with in pore size($0.2-1{\mu}m$ ) of group 2.
The purpose of this study is to promote the substitution of rice flour for wheat flour in making bread and thus the consumption of rice by examining the effect of particle size of rice flour on leavening rice bread. For this purpose, several experiments were carried out. With regard to particle size distribution, 59.45% of wheat flour had passed 200 mesh and 3 kinds of rice flour milled to penetrate into 20, 35, and 45 mesh (S1, S2 and S3) had passed 21.88%, 33.1% and 36.38% of those for 200 mesh, respectively. To leaven the rice flour dough to bread, 25% of vital gluten was needed. To determine the optimal water quantity for rice bread dough, the hardness of wheat and rice flour dough was measured by rheometer. The appropriate water quantity for S1, S2 and S3 was set at 285 ml , 295 ml and 335${\sim}$340m1, respectively. The loaf volume index of the wheat flour bread was 6.24, while that of and rice flour bread S1, S2 and S3 was 5.38, 5.50 and 5.75, respectively. These results indicated that the loaf volume index of rice flour bread is lower than that of wheat flour bread, but that the volume of rice flour bread was increased with fuel particle size of rice flour. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), image of the wheat bread tissue at a magnification of 35 times showed long, large, oval-shaped, air cells and thin cell membrane, as well as small air cells, whereas the images of rice flour showed angular, circular, air cells and rough and thick cell membrane. The size and number of air cells in the rice bread were larger in S2 and S3 with fuel particle flours than in S1. In particular, the bread made with S3 contained many air cells that were as large as those in the wheat bread were. In addition, when the inner cell wall was magnified 1500 times, almost no small air cell was observed in C and S3, whereas many fine air cells were observed in the cell wall of S1 and S2.

In resolution-constrained quantization, the size of Voronoi cell varies depending on probability density function of the input data, which causes large amount of distortion outliers. We propose a vector quantization method that reduces distortion outliers by combining the generalized Lloyd algorithm (GLA) and the cell-size constrained vector quantization (CCVQ) scheme. The training data are divided into the inside and outside regions according to the size of Voronoi cell, and consequently CCVQ and GLA are applied to each region, respectively. As CCVQ is applied to the densely populated region of the source instead of GLA, the number of centroids for the outside region can be increased such that distortion outliers can be decreased. In real-world environment, source mismatch between training and test data is inevitable. For the source mismatch case, the proposed algorithm improves performance in terms of average distortion and distortion outliers.
Background: Diabetes is a chronic disease characterized by impaired fasting blood glucose that leads to disturbances in various organs. In this study, we evaluated relationships between tumor size and grade in a population of diabetic and non-diabetic patients with renal cell carcinoma. Materials and Methods: Between 2007-2013, in our clinic radical nephrectomy performed to 310 patients for renal tumors and pathology reported renal cell carcinoma cases were enrolled in the study. Patients with and without a history of diabetes regarding fasting glucose and HgA1c levels were evaluated during surgery for tumor size and Fuhrman grade. Results: Diabetes was found in 95 patients. The mean age of the patients with and without diabetes mellitus was 64.3 (40-79) and 58.4 (31-87) years, respectively. In the diabetes group 51% of patients had a tumor size over 7 cm and 54% a tumor grade over Fuhrman 3. The respective figures in the non-diabetes group were 35% and 30% (p<0.05 in both cases). Conclusions: Renal cancer appears more aggressive in patients with diabetes. In this study lifestyle and risk factors with diabetes regulation were observed to be important for renal cancer patients. Multicenter studies are needed in larger series for more accurate results.
Fe-Cr-Al powder porous metal was manufactured by using new electro-spray process. First, ultra-fine fecralloy powders were produced by using the submerged electric wire explosion process. Evenly distributed colloid (0.05~0.5% powders) was dispersed on Polyurethane foam through the electro-spray process. And then degreasing and sintering processes were conduced. In order to examine the effect of cell size ($200{\mu}m$, $450{\mu}m$, $500{\mu}m$) in process, pre-samples were sintered for two hours at temperature of $1450^{\circ}C$, in $H_2$ atmospheres. A 24-hour thermo gravimetric analysis test was conducted at $1000^{\circ}C$ in a 79% $N_2$ + 21% $O_2$ to investigate the high temperature oxidation behavior of powder porous metal. The results of the high temperature oxidation tests showed that oxidation resistance increased with increasing cell size. In the $200{\mu}m$ porous metal with a thinner strut and larger specific surface area, the depletion of the stabilizing elements such as Al and Cr occurred more quickly during the high-temperature oxidation compared with the 450, $500{\mu}m$ porous metals.

Melting method has long been considered difficult to realize because of problems such as the low foamability of molten metal, the varying size of cellular structures and solidification shrinkage. The parameters to solve the problem in electric furnace were stirring temperature, stirring velocity, heating velocity and foaming temperature It is important to consider the effects of induction heating, because it brings about the inner flow by the temperature gradient. Aspect ratio also depends on the induction heating. Mechanical properties are dependent on cell sizes and aspect rations. Therefore, this paper presents the effects of these parameters on the cell sizes. For the sake of this, combined stirring process was used to fabricate aluminum foam materials by the above mentioned parameters. Image analysis was performed to calculate the cell sizes, distributions, and aspect ratioes at the cross section of feared aluminum in the direction of height.
