천상열차분야지도 각석의 재질특성과 비파괴 훼손도 평가 (Material Characteristics and Nondestructive Deterioration Assessment for the Celestial Chart Stone, Korea)

  • 국립고궁박물관 소장 천상열차분야지도 각석 및 복각천상열차분야지도 각석은 우리나라의 전통 천문학 수준을 실증하는 대표적인 과학문화유산이다. 태조본 각석은 암갈색 점판암, 숙종본 각석은 회백색 백운암으로 서로 다른 암석으로 제작되었다. 태조본 점판암은 석영, 백운모, 백운석의 광물조성을 보였으며, 숙종본 백운암은 백운석, 고토감람석, 방해석으로 구성되어 있다. 태조본 각석은 숙종본에 비해 손상이 심화되어 있으며 주요한 손상인자는 균열 및 탈락이다. 숙종본에서는 긁힘과 인위적인 오염물이 관찰되었다. 태조본 및 숙종본 각석 측면과 후면에 나타나는 녹색 및 흑색 표면오염물은 수지 기반의 페인트 물질로 해석된다. 한편, 초음파 물성평가에서 태조본 각석은 좌측면 상부가, 숙종본 각석은 전면 우측부가 저속도대를 보인다. 태조본각석의 안정성을 저해하는 주요 균열에 대해 To-Tc법으로 발달 상태를 조사한 결과, 균열의 전개부 및 중심부에서 가장 깊은 심도가 측정되었다.

ANALYSIS OF THE KOREAN CELESTIAL PLANISPHERE: CH'ON-SANG-YUL-CHA-BUN-YA-JI-DO

  • We have analyzed the content of the Korean stone star chart. Ch'on-Sang-Yul-Cha-Bun-Ya-Ji-Do(here-after Ch'on-Sang-Do). In the star map we have found 1468 stars, 4 more than the Chinese star catalog Bo-Chun-Ga. The four extra stars form a constellation, Jong Dae Boo. The map projection law used in the star chart is found to be the polar equtorial and equidistance projection. The linear distance of an object on Ch'on-Sang-Do from the center is linearly proportional to the north polar angular distance. We have found from a statistical analysis that most stars with declination lower than 50 are at positions representing the epoch of around the first century. On the other hand, stars near the north pole with declination higher than 50 are at the epoch of about 1300, which is close to the time the chart was engraved. This implies that the original Ko-Gu-Rye Dynasty's star chart has been revised by astronomers of Cho-Sun Dynasty. We have also shown that stars on Ch'on-Sang-Do are engraved in such a way that their area is linearly proportional to the visual magnitude.

태백산 개천절 제의 깃발에 그려진 별자리 연구 (A STUDY OF THE CONSTELLATION MAPS IN MT. TAEBAEK'S HARVEST CEREMONY FLAG)

  • Gaecheonjeol is the National Foundation day of Korea when people hold a harvest ceremony. Nowadays, two representative harvest ceremonies of Korea are performed at Mt. Mari (摩利山) and Mt. Taebaek (太白山) on Gaecheonjeol (October 3rd). We study 28 flags with constellations appearing in the ceremony of Mt. Taebaek. These flags are lying in the outer of the circular stone wall during the ceremony. They represent an oriental heavenly star chart. We examine the shape, the connecting-pattern, the name, and the number of constellations drawn in the flags, and find several errors, such as, a wrong position, a typo of name, an irregular size, an omission, and so forth. Traditionally, the 28 oriental constellations are usually divided into four groups and each group has its own colour for each direction: Blue (E), Black (N), White (W), and Red (S). For the constellation flags in Mt. Taebaek, the colour of the flags is painted based on geographical directions, but the constellations are arranged followed by the direction of the celestial sphere. Thus, constellations in the northern and southern parts are counterchanged. Finally, we suggest some possible criteria for constellation map of the flags in this paper. CheonSangYeolChaBunYaJiDo (天象列次分野之圖) and CheonMunRyuCho (天文類抄) can be essential references for correcting constellations drawn in the flags of Mt. Taebaek.
