Effects of Ceria and CO Reductant on $N_2O$ Decomposition over the Layered Mixed Oxide Catalysts (층상 혼합금속산화물 촉매에 의한 $N_2O$ 분해에서 Ceria 첨가 및 CO 환원제의 영향)

  • Nitrous oxide ($N_2O$) is a greenhouse material which is hard to remove. Even with a catalytic process it requires a reaction temperature, at least, higher than 670 K. This study has been performed to see the effects of Ce addition to the mixed oxide catalyst which shows the highest activity in decomposing $N_2O$ completely at temperature as low as 473 K when CO is used as a reducing agent. Mixed metal oxide(MMO) catalyst was made through co-precipitation process with small amount of Ce added to the base components of Co, Al and Rh or Pd. Consequently, the surface area of the catalyst decreased with the contents of Ce, and the catalytic activity of direct decomposition of $N_2O$ also decreased. However, in the presence of CO, the activity was found high enough to compensate the portion of activity decrease by Ce addition, so that it can be ascertained that the catalytic activity and stability can be maintained in the CO involved $N_2O$ reduction system when Ce is added for the physical stability of the catalyst.

The Effect of the Phase Transformations on the Durability of the Plasma Sprayed Thermal Barrier Coatings (플라즈마 용사에 의한 열벽코팅의 상변태가 내구성에 미치는 영향)

  • 플라즈마 용사된 열벽코팅의 수명을 평가하기 위하여 여러가지 양의 CeO$_2$(16,18,20,22,24 그리고 26 wt.% CeO$_2$)를 포함하는 지르코니아 코팅에 대한 상분석이 행하여 졌다. 플라즈마 용사된 후 16 및 18 wt.% CeO$_2$를 포함하는 지르코니아 코팅에서는 비평형 tetragonal 상 만이 생성되었으나 20-26 wt.% CeO$_2$를 포함하는 지르코니아 코팅에서는 비평형 tetragonal 및 cubic 상의 혼합상이 관찰되었다. 열순환 산화시험 동안에는 비평형 tetragonal 및 cubic 상은 평형 tetragonal 및 cubic 상으로 변태하였다. 평형 tetragonal 상의 일부는 열순환 산화시험의 냉각과정 중에 monoclinic 상으로 변태하였다. 그리고 16 wt.% CeO$_2$를 포함하는 지르코니아 코팅은 다른 조성의 지르코니아 코팅보다 열순환 산화시험 동안 더 많은 monoclinic 상이 생성되었으며 세라믹 코팅 수명이 짧았다.

  • Simplification of the buffer architecture in the fabrication of coated conductors is required because the deposition of multi-layers leads to a longer production time and a higher cost of coated conductors. In this study, a single layered buffer deposition of $CeO_2$ for low cost coated conductors has been tried using thermal evaporation technique. l00nm-thick $CeO_2$ layers deposited by thermal evaporation were found to act as a diffusion layer. $0.4{\mu}m$-thick SmBCO superconducting layers were deposited by thermal co-evaporation on the $CeO_2$ buffered Ni-W substrate. Critical current of $55.4 A/cm^2$ was obtained for the SmBCO coated conductors.

  • We have fabricated good quality superconducting $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-{\delta}}$ thin films on Hastelloy(Ni-Cr-Mo alloys) with $CeO_2$ buffer layers by in-situ pulsed laser deposition in a multi-target processing chamber. Using one of electrical properties of YBCO superconducting which the resistance approaches to zero dramatically on transition temperature, we have researched to make power transmission line, we have deposited YBCO thin film on flexible metallic substrate. However, it is difficult to make films on flexible metallic substrates due to both interdiffusion problem between metallic substrate and superconducting layer and non-crystallization of YBCO on amorphous substrate. From early research, two ways-using textured metallic substrate and buffer layer-were proposed to overcome theses difficulties. We have chosen $CeO_2$ as a buffer layer which has cubic structure of $5.41{\AA}$ lattice parameter and only 0.2% of lattice mismatch with $3.82{\AA}$ of a-axis lattice parameter of YBCO on (110) direction of $CeO_2$. In order to enhance the crystallization of YBCO films on metallic substrates we deposited $CeO_2$ buffer layers at varying temperature $700^{\circ}C$ to $800^{\circ}C$ and $O_2$ pressure. By X-ray diffraction, we found that each domination of (200) and (111) orientations were strongly relied upon the deposition temperature in $CeO_2$ layer and the change of the domination of orientation affects the crystallization of YBCO upper layer.

A Study on the Coloration of the $Nd_2O_3$ Containing Glass by X-ray Irradiation ($Nd_2O_3$ 함유 유리의 X-선조사에 따른 변색에 관한 연구)

  • The coloration of the $Nd_2O_3$ contained $R_2O-BaO-SrO-ZrO_2-SiO_2$ glass added the various amount of $CeO_2$ $MnO_2$, $Fe_2O_3$ and $As_2O_3$ alone or together by the irradiation of X-ray irradiation,. The glasses added $CeO_2$ in proportion to amount were more effective on preventing coloration by X-ray irradiation but the addition of $MnO_2$ produced different color according to the amount of addition. The addition of the $Fe_2O_3$, $TiO_2$ and $As_2O_3$ did not give much effects to the transmission changes of $Nd_2O_3$ contained glass by X-ray irradiation but the glass added $CeO_2$ , $Fe_2O_3$, $TiO_2$ together was most effective to prevent coloration and transmisson changes.

Capillary Electrophoresis Detection of Hydrogen Peroxide by Using Titanium Ion and 4-(2-thiazolylazo)resorcinol

  • A novel method for the detection of hydrogen peroxide in aqueous solution was developed via reaction between $H_2O_2$, trivalent titanium ion ($Ti^{3+}$) and 4-(2-thiazolylazo) resorcinol (TAR), resulting in a ternary complex with a maximum UV absorbance at 530 nm. The CE detection of $H_2O_2$ was fast, sensitive and cost-effective without pretreatment procedures. $H_2O_2$ was detected within 15 min at 1 to $100{\mu}M$ range with the lowest detection limit at $1.0{\mu}M$. Under the optimized CE conditions, the concentration of $H_2O_2$ in coffee or tea extract was quantitatively determined. Our results show that CE detection of the ternary complex of $H_2O_2-Ti^{3+}$-TAR has potential applications for the detection of $H_2O_2$ in aqueous sources.

  • A green biosynthesis method is described for the preparation of Polyaniline (PANI)-cerium dioxide ($CeO_2$) nanocomposites in different media via in-situ oxidative polymerization procedure. The effect of various media including use of HCl, Lemon Juice, Beverage, White Vinegar, Verjuice and Apple vinegar extracts on the particles size, morphology as well as the conductivity of $PANI-CeO_2$ nanocomposites was investigated. The electron-withdrawing feature of $CeO_2$ increases doping level of PANI and enhances electron delocalization. These cause a significantly blue shift of C = C stretching band of quinoid from $1570cm^{-1}$ to $1585cm^{-1}$. The optical properties of the pure material and polymeric nanocomposites as well as their interfacial interaction in nanocomposite structures analyzed by UV-visible spectroscopy. The DC electrical conductivity (${\sigma}$) of as-prepared HCl doped PANI and a $PANI-CeO_2$ nanocomposite measured by a four-probe method at room temperature was studied.

  • The MFIS capacitors were fabricated using a metalorganic decomposition method. Thin layers of $CeO_2$ were deposited as a buffer layer on Si substrate and BLT thin films were used as a ferroelectric layer. The electrical and structural properties of the MFIS structure were investigated. X-ray diffraction was used to determine the phase of the BLT thin films and the quality of the $CeO_2$ layer. The morphology of films and the interface structures of the BLT and the $CeO_2$ layers were investigated by scanning electron microscopy. The width of the memory window in the C-V curves for the MFIS structure is 4.78 V. The experimental results show that the BLT-based MFIS structure is suitable for non-volatile memory FETs with large memory window.
