  • In this study a pure vector potential method (PVPM) for a three dimensional, unsteady, incompressible flow is proposed. A simplified version for a two dimensional problem is described in detail, and a method to prescribe appropriate boundary conditions is also presented. The resulting numerical algorithm is applied to the cavity flow driven by an impulsively started wall and also to the Stokes' first problem. Some important unsteady/steady features are captured for these two flows, and quantitative agreements of flow variables with available reference database are good.

  • Knowledge of airflow characteristics in nasal cavities is essential to understand the physiological and pathological aspects of nasal breathing. Several studies have utilized physical models of the healthy nasal cavity to investigate the relationship between nasal anatomy and airflow. In our laboratory, there have been a series of experimental investigations on the nasal airflow in normal, abnormal, and deformed nasal cavity models by PIV under both constant and periodic flow conditions. In this time normal and several deformed nasal cavity models, which simulate surgical operation, Turbinectomy, are investigated numerically by the FVM general purpose code and PIV analysis. The comparisons of these results are appreciated. Dense CT data and careful treatment of model surface under the ENT doctor's advice provide more sophisticated cavity models. The Davis (LaVision Co.) code is used for PIV flow analysis. Average and RMS distributions have been obtained for inspirational and expirational nasal airflows in the normal and deformed nasal cavities.

  • To achieve efficient supersonic combustion within a manageable length, a successful fuel injection scheme must provide rapid mixing between fuel and airstream. In former days, various injection concepts have been investigated. Cavity flow is the open type, that is, length-to-depth ratio L/D=4.8, aft ramp angle is $22.5^{\circ}$. An experimental study on a transverse cross jet injection into a Mach 1.92 supersonic main stream which flows over a cavity was carried out to investigate the effect of the momentum flux ratio(J), the jet interaction characteristics, and the pressure distribution in the combustor and using the primary diagnostics : schlieren visualization and wall static pressure measurements. Fuel penetration height and jet interaction characteristics depend strongly on the momentum flux ratio.

  • The numerical diffusion arising from streamline-to-grid skewness produces a deteriorating effect on the numerical accuracy. The QUICKER scheme to reduce the numerical diffusion requires more computational effort than the HYBRID scheme. This paper deals with the relative computational efficiencies of adopting QUICKER scheme with a coarser grid system and of adopting HYBRID scheme with a denser grid system. Laminar driven cavity flow with Re=400, 1000 is used as a test problem. It is found that QUICKER scheme with a coarser grid system is more efficient than the HYBRID scheme with a denser grid system.

  • A numerical study of the flow of incompressible fluid in a polar cavity is presented. Irregular grids is proposed by applying the interior division principle to the variables on polar coordinate grid formation. Stability analysis and the pressure correction method of SOLA algorithms were discussed in detail on cylindrical coordinates. The results present that unsteady flow behavior appears over $Re=3{\times}10^4$ on polar cavities but nearly steady state at $Re=10^4$. Furthermore, with increasing Reynolds numbers, vortices behaviors indicate more complicated flow phenomena and more severe temporal fluctuation of total kinetic energy and time variation of velocity components at arbitrary pick-up points are detected in case of $Re=5{\times}10^4$.

  • For the first time, airflow in the nasal cavity of a normal Korean adult is investigated experimentally by PIV measurement. Nasal airflow can be subdivided into two interrelated categories; nasal airflow resistance and heat and mass transfer between the air stream and the walls of the nasal cavity. In this study, thanks to a new method for the model casting by a combination of the rapid prototyping and curing of clear silicone. a transparent rectangular box containing the complex nasal cavity can be made fur PIV experiments. The CBC PIV algorithm is used for analysis. Average and RMS distributions are obtained for inspirational and expiration nasal airflows. Data fer the airflow at the end of meatuses are obtained for the first time. Comparisons between western and Korean nasal airflows are appreciated. Due to the difference in geometry of the frontal part of nasal cavity, the flow near nares shows the difference.

  • Numerical simulations of two-dimensional steady incompressible lid-driven flow in a square cavity are presented by a new solution code(PowerCFD) which adopts an unstructured cell-centered method. Solutions are obtained for configurations with a Reynolds number as high as 10,000 with both rectangular and hybrid types of unstructured grid mesh in order to validate the code's independency of grid type. Interesting features of the flow are presented in detail and comparisons are made with benchmark solutions found in the literature. It is found that the code is capable of producing accurately the nature of the lid-driven cavity flow at high Reynolds numbers with no grid type dependency.

  • Numerical analysis of the three dimensional flow in a bus engine room is carried out through this study. The radiator and the fan modeling rare carried out to simulate the flow in an engine room, and the results are focused on the flow in the cavity located in front of the radiator. The numerical simulation results are compared with the experiment . To improve the cooling performance in the bus engine room, the flow inside the cavity is inspected in detail. The complex flow features are found in this region , and the suggestion are made to improve the radiators cooling performance.

  • Numerical study on the chaotic stirring of viscous flow in an alternately driven cavity has been performed. Even under the Stokes-flow assumption, the inherent singularity at the corners made the problem not so easily accessible. With some special treatments to the region near the corners, the biharmonic equation was solved numerically by using the fully implicit method. The velocity field was then used in obtaining the trajectories of passive particles for studying the stirring effect. The three tools developed in the field of the nonlinear dynamics and chaos, that are the Poincare sections, the unstable manifolds, and the Lyapunov exponents, were used in analysing the stirring effect. It was shown that the unstable manifolds obtained in this study well fit the experimental results given by the previous investigators. It is predicted that the best stirring can be obtained when the aspect ratio a is near 0.8 and the dimensionless period T is in the range 4.3 - 4.7.
