  • In the manufacture process of refrigerator cabinet, polyurethane(PU) liquid firstly is injected between outer plate and inner case in high temperature about $40^{\circ}C$, and PU foam is generated and solidified to the room temperature. There will be great residual stress in the PU foam, especially at the corners after the whole refrigerator is completely assembled. The stress condition will become more complicated under operating condition because of the large temperature difference between the freezing room and outer plate. And also, there are great differences of properties for plastic and steel which would cause different deformation under temperature gradient. The steel outer plate would expand compared to the PU foam or ABS material under operation condition, which induces a thermally bowing deformation in the refrigerator cabinet. The objective of this paper is to design an optimum bead structure or to use reinforcement in the refrigerator except for improving material properties in order to decrease the deformation.

  • Mountainous areas cover more than 70% of Korea. With the rapid increase in tunnel construction, tunnel-collapse incidents and excessive deformation are occurring more frequently. In addition, longer tunnel structures are being constructed, and geologically weaker ground conditions are increasingly being encountered during the construction process. Tunnels constructed under weak ground conditions exhibit long-term deformation behavior that leads to tunnel instability. This study analyzes the behavior of the bottom region of tunnels under geological conditions of long-term deformation. Long-term deformation causes various types of damage, such as cracks and ridges in the packing part of tunnels, as well as cracks and upheavals in the pavement of tunnels. We observed rapid tunnel over-displacement due to the squeezing of a fault rupture zone after the inflow of a large amount of groundwater. Excessive increments in the support member strength resulted in damage to the support and tunnel bottom. In addition, upward infiltration pressure on the tunnel road was found to cause severe pavement damage. Furthermore, smectite (a highly expandable mineral), chlorite, illite, and hematite, were also observed. Soil samples and rock samples containing clay minerals were found to have greater expansibility than general soil samples. Considering these findings, countermeasures against the deformation of tunnel bottoms are required.

  • In order to establish the cause of the deformation of polyurethane foam, compression set was measured according to the aging temperature and time. FT-IR, TGA, DSC and DMA were used for investigating the cause of deformation of aged PUF. The results of FT-IR and TGA reveals that no structure change occurred during deformation of PUF. Resilience of aged PUF was reduced by the increase of reduction ratio in storage modulus over the glass transition temperature of hard segment.

  • A brake system in automobile is one of the important parts that directly affect the safety of passengers. Particularly, disk brake module is applied to almost all kinds of automobile brake system due to its remarkable braking power and braking distance. In the disk brake module of an automobile, the bolt for tire wheel is assembled to the disk brake hub by interference fit (bolt pressing process). The process induces small deformation whose range is within tens of ${\mu}m$ and this deformation may cause the runout badness of the whole disk brake module, and even braking problems such as judder or squeal phenomena which makes the loss of braking efficiency. In this study, bolt pressing fit into hub was simulated by $ANSYS^{TM}$, a commercial structure analysis program. Also, the aspect and the cause of hub displacement were analyzed and the solution for decreasing runout of hub was proposed.

  • This paper deals with the reduction of friction torque in permanent magnet motors by using the heat treatment of stator core. The stator core is made of electrical steel sheared by the punching die. From the punching process, large mechanical stress acting on the edge of stator tooth induces significant plastic and elastic deformation and then cause the change of magnetization properties. Then, the mechanical and magnetic unbalance in the sheared region of stator tooth produced by material cutting has influence on the friction torque. This paper investigated the effect of the punching process on the magnetization process and the mechanical deformation, and then proposed the stress relief annealing method for the reduction of friction torque among one of motor characteristics.

  • Folder type electronic devices have hinge to support the rotational motion of folder. This hinge is stressed by the rotational inertia moment of folder at the maximum open limit position of folder. This stress is repeated whenever the folder is open, and it is a cause of hinge fracture. In this paper, the reliability evaluation for the hinge fracture in the folder type cellular phone is discussed. For this, the durability testing machine using crank-rocker mechanism is developed to evaluate the life cycle of the hinge, and the degradation after repetitions of opening and shutting is evaluated from the deformation around the hinge, where the deformation is measured by ESPI (electronic speckle pattern interferometer). Experimental results showed that ESPI was able to measure the deformation of hinge precisely, so we could monitor the change of deformation around the hinge as the repetition number of folder open is increased.

  • When one opens the door of a microwave oven during its operation, twisting deformation of the door occurs, which may cause leakage of microwave through the gap between the door and the front plate. A numerical optimization is implemented to minimize the gap by maximizing twisting stiffness of the door of the oven. Design variables are deformed, which describe the shape of the bead in the horizontal and vertical flanges of the door frame. To minimize the twisting deformation, Two optimal design problems to find shapes of the bead in the flange are established. The problems are solved by a numerical optimization technique, their results being evaluated.

The paper presents a heat and vibration characteristics that compare a advanced linear motor with developed linear motor through experiment and analyses. The heat in linear motor system is identified for experimental data and analytic data using the Finite Volume Method (FVM). Also, it shows that the optimum standard analyzed the acceleration patterns of the moving part cause the vibration source in linear motor. It presents the analyzed dynamics of linear motor in compliance with a deformation of the non-linear factor.

  • The unloading effect from excavations can cause the deformation of adjacent tunnels, which may seriously influence the operation and safety of those tunnels. However, systematic studies of the deformation characteristics of tunnels located along side excavations are limited, and simplified methods to predict the influence of excavations on tunnels are also rare. In this study, the simulation capability of a finite element method (FEM) considering the small-strain characteristics of soil was verified using a case study. Then, a large number of FEM simulations examining the influence of excavations on adjacent tunnels were conducted. Based on the simulation results, the deformation characteristics of tunnels at different positions and under four deformation modes of the retaining structure were analyzed. The results indicate that the deformation mode of the retaining structure has a significant influence on the deformation of certain tunnels. When the deformation magnitudes of the retaining structures are the same, the influence degree of the excavation on the tunnel increased in this order: from cantilever type to convex type to composite type to kick-in type. In practical projects, the deformation mode of the retaining structure should be optimized according to the tunnel position, and kick-in deformation should be avoided. Furthermore, two methods to predict the influence of excavations on adjacent tunnels are proposed. Design charts, in terms of normalized tunnel deformation contours, can be used to quantitatively estimate the tunnel deformation. The design table of the excavation influence zones can be applied to determine which influence zone the tunnel is located in.

  • The thermal deformation of a workpiece during grinding is one of the most important factors that affect a flatness of a grinding surface. The heat generated in one-pass surface grinding causes the convex deformation of a workpiece. Therefore, the ground surface represents a conacve profile. In the analysis a simple model of the temperature distribution, based on the result of a finite element method, is applied. The analyzed results are compared with experimental results in surface grinding. The main results obtained are as follows; (1) The temperature distibution of a workpiece by FEM is comparatively in good agreement with the experimental results. (2) The bending moment by generated heat cause a convex deformation of the workpiece and it reads to a concave profile of the grinding surface.
