New record of Juvenile Stethojulis trilineata (Perciformes: Labridae) from Korea, Revealed by Molecular Analysis

  • A single specimen of a juvenile Stethojulis trilineata was first collected from the coastal waters of Ulsan, Korea, in October 2012. This species is characterized by IX dorsal fin spines, 26 lateral line scales, 25 vertebrae, dark spots between the 10th and 11th dorsal fin rays, and a caudal peduncle region. The new Korean name proposed is "Se-jul-mu-ji-gae-nol-rae-gi" for S. trilineata.

  • A new record of the eyeshade sculpin Nautichthys pribilovius is described on the basis of a single specimen collected from the East Sea, Korea. The species has 23 second dorsal fin rays, rounded spines on the occiput, a black band through the eye and across the cheek, branched caudal fin rays and a branchiostegal membrane attached to the isthmus. The new Korean name "Gum-eun-tti-nun-hoet-dae-sok" is proposed for the genus Nautichthys, and "Gum-eun-tti-nun-hoet-dae" is proposed for the species N. pribilovius.

New Record of Sebastes nudus and Redescription of Sebastes pachycephalus (Pisces: Scorpaenidae) from Korea

  • Using the criteria of previous study, we analyzed the morphological characters of 66 specimens of the Sebastes pachycephalus complex collected from Korea between 2008 and 2013. As a result, the 37 specimens were identified as Sebastes nudus, and the remaining specimens as Sebastes pachycephalus. Sebastes nudus is characterized by the absence of scales below the base of the dorsal fin spines; the absence of dark spots on the dorsal, anal, and caudal fins; and the presence of distinct yellow or brownish-red markings on the dorsum (when fresh). The most similar species S. pachycephalus differs from S. nudus in having minute scales below the base of the dorsal fin spines. We propose the new Korean name "Hwang-jeom-gae-bol-rak" for S. nudus, and redescribe S. pachycephalus.

First Record of a Deep-dwelling Goby, Obliquogobius yamadai (Perciformes: Gobiidae) from Korea (제주도 남부 외해에서 출현한 망둑어과(농어목) 한국미기록종, Obliquogobius yamadai)

  • A deep-dwelling goby, Obliquogobius yamadai, was described as the first record from Korea based on three specimens (30.3~47.0 mm SL) collected from the southern sea off Jeju Island. The species is characterized by having I, 9 second dorsal fin rays, scaled lateral side of nape, smaller head with large eye, and asymmetrical caudal fin dorsoventrally as well as about nine yellowish bars on body side. A new Korean name, "Gip-eun-ba-da-no-ran-ddi-mang-dug", is proposed for the species.

Comparison of morphological characteristics of the river puffer, Takifugu obscurus, the tiger puffer, T. rubripes, their hybrids, and their triploid hybrids

  • Various biometric and geometric measures were used to discriminate between the morphologically similar river puffer, Takifugu obscurus, tiger puffer, T. rubripes, their hybrids, and their triploid hybrids. The hybrids and triploid hybrids had greater anal fin width, nostril width, and snout length than the parental species (p<0.05). However, they had less caudal peduncle depth, inter-orbital width, head length, and head width(p<0.05). The morphometric and meristic characteristics of the hybrids and triploid hybrids were either intermediate between the parental species or more similar to those of one parental species. However, the external morphology of the hybrids and triploid hybrids was predominantly maternal. The triploid hybrids had asymmetry in the fin rays and gill raker numbers. This study identified phenotypic characteristics by distinguishing the morphological variables of river puffer, tiger puffer, their hybrids, and their triploid hybrids.

First Record of Epinephelus areolatus (Perciformes: Serranidae) from Korea

  • One specimen of Epinephelus areolatus, belonging to the subfamily Epinephelinae of the family Serranidae, was collected by a hook from commercial longline fisheries in the coastal waters of Jeju Island, Korea. This species is mostly similar to E. chlorostigma, but the former is distinguished from the latter by having larger brown spots and a white posterior margin on the caudal fin. We propose a new Korean name "Dae-moon-ba-ri" for E. areolatus.

New Record of Sillago sinica (Pisces: Sillaginidae) in Korean Waters, and Re-identification of Sillago parvisquamis Previously Reported from Korea as S. sinica

  • A single specimen of the genus Sillago, collected from Gwangyang, Korea, in May 2009, is characterized by XI first dorsal fin spines, 3 or 4 rows of melanophore pattern along the second dorsal fin membrane, and a darkish posterior margin of the caudal fin. Our specimen was identified as Sillago sinica reported as a new species; this identification is confirmed by mitochondrial DNA cytochrome oxidase subunit I sequences, which show that our specimen corresponds to S. sinica (d=0.000) and differs from the congeneric species Sillago parvisquamis (d=0.170). Comparisons of Korean specimens previously reported as S. parvisquamis with specimens of S. sinica show that the S. parvisquamis specimens are actually S. sinica. We propose the new Korean name "buk-bang-jeom-bo-ri-myeol" for S. sinica.

  • Morphology of glochidia of two species of Unionidae mussels, Unio douglasiae and Anodonta woodiana were studied based on SEM, and their attachment on Acheilognathus yamatsutae(Acheilognathinae) was observed in the experimentally infected fishes. The glochidia were round-triangle in shape and possessed larval threads, hooks, hooklets, and sensory hairs. Glochidal attachment and cyst formation of the fish were observed without regard to feeding habit and habitat. Density of glochida on the fish (Acheilognathus yamatsutae) was in the order of pectoral fin, dorsal fin, gill and caudal fin. The host fish became encysted about 5-10 hours to the glochidia, and the glochidia detached about 5-6 days after attachment at water temperature $26{\pm}1^{\circ}C$.

Morphological Development of Eggs, Larvae and Juveniles of the Hemibarbus longirostris (Cypriniformes : Cyprinidae) from Korea (한국산 참마자(Hemibarbus longirostris) (Cypriniformes : Cyprinidae)의 난 발생 및 자치어 형태 발달)

  • This study was carried out to clarify the larvae and juveniles of egg development and autonomous development of Hemibarbus longirostris from Korea, and to obtain basic data for species conservation and seed production. The shape of the egg was circular and sticky. The average size of the eggs was 2.01 mm (n=10). At 185 hours after fertilization, more than 50% of the total embryos were hatched. The newly hatched larvae had an average total length of 8.10 mm (n=5) and had egg yolk in the abdomen. At 3 days after hatching, the larvae absorbed all egg yolk was average total length 8.64 mm. On the 6 days after hatching, the caudal tip of the notochord started to curve upwards was average total length 10.9 mm. At 70 days after hatching, the average total length 37.9 mm. The number of fins was i 8-10 in dorsal fin, iii 7 in the anal fin, and ii 5 in the ventral fin.

First Record of Gymnogobius cylindricus (Perciformes: Gobiidae) from Incheon River Estuary, Jeonbuk-do, Korea (전북 인천강 하구역에서 출현한 망둑어과(농어목) 한국미기록종, Gymnogobius cylindricus)

  • Based on a single specimen (49.9 mm SL) collected from Incheon River estuary, south-western Korea, Gymnogobius cylindricus was described as the first record from Korea as well as the westernmost record of the world. The species is characterized by having a large maxilla extend far beyond posterior margin of eye, dorsal fin with VI-I, 12 rays, anal fin with I, 11 rays, and without dark blotches and dots on lower part of body and caudal fin, respectively. A new Korean name, "Ga-neunsal-mang-dug" is proposed for the species.
