A modified two-point impedance spectroscopy technique exploits the geometric constriction between an electrolyte and a cathode with an emphasis on semispherical-shaped electrolytes. The spatial limitation in the electrolyte/electrode interface leads to local amplification of the electrochemical reaction occurring in the corresponding electrolyte/electrode region. The modified impedance spectroscopy was applied to electrical monitoring of a YSZ ($Y_2O_3$-stabilized $ZrO_2$)/SSC ($Sm_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}CoO_3$) system. The resolved bulk and interfacial component was numerically analyzed in combination with an equivalent circuit model. The effectiveness of the "spreading resistance" concept is validated by analysis of the electrode polarization in the cathode materials of solid oxide fuel cells.
In this study, hetero-electrode structures have been fabricated to increase luminescence efficiency. The presence of a thin layer of Sn or Ag at the organic-aluminum interface enhanced both electron injection efficiency and electroluminescence when compared to OLEDs using homogeneous electrode. In this paper, the effect of the cathode using Sn/Al hetero electrode structure is observed. Electric properties of the OLED using Sn/Al hetero cathode are improved in comparison of only Al cathode. The hetero-electrode existing different energy level induces the advanced structure of OLED can accumulate electron density. The luminescence efficiency of OLED with Sn/Al of Ag/Al cathode is higher because of their higher electron injection efficiency. And, the turn on voltage of the OLED device using Sn thin layer is lowest as about 10 V.
Development of advanced Li-ion battery cells with high durability is critical for safe operation, especially in applications to electric vehicles and portable electronic devices. Understanding fundamental mechanism on the formation of a solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer, which plays a substantial role in the electrochemical stability of the Li-ion battery, in a cathode was rarely reported unlike in an anode. Using first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations and ab-initio molecular dynamic (AIMD) simulations we demonstrate atomic-level process on the generation of the SEI layer at the interface of a carbonate-based electrolyte and a spinel $LiMn_2O_4$ cathode. To accomplish the object we calculate the energy band alignment between the work function of the cathode and frontier orbitals of the electrolyte. We figure out that a proton abstraction from the carbonate-based electrolyte is a critical step for the initiation of an SEI layer formation. Our results can provide a design concept for stable Li-ion batteries by optimizing electrolytes to form proper SEI layers.
An anode-supported SOFC single cell having $5{\mu}m$ thin electrolyte was fabricated cost-effectively by tape casting, laminating, and co-filing of anode (NiO-YSZ), cathode (LSM-YSZ), and electrolyte (YSZ) components. The optimal slurry compositions of the green tapes for SOFC components were determined by an analysis of the mean diameter, the slurry viscosity, the tensile strength/strain of the green tapes, and their green microstructures. The single cells with a dense electrolyte and porous electrodes could be co-fired successfully at $1325\sim1350^{\circ}C$ by controlling the contents of pore former and the ratio of coarse YSZ and fine YSZ in the anode and the cathode. The single cell co-fired at $1350^{\circ}C$ showed $100.2mWcm^{-2}$ of maximum power density at $800^{\circ}C$ but it was impossible to apply it to operate at low temperature because of low performance and high ASR, which were attributed to formation of the secondary phases in the cathode and the interface between the electrolyte and the cathode.
In this article, we report the effect of blended cathode materials on the performance of all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries (ASLBs) with oxide-based organic/inorganic hybrid electrolytes. LiFePO4 material is good candidates as cathode material in PEO-based solid electrolytes because of their low operating potential of 3.4 V; however, LiFePO4 suffers from low electric conductivity and low Li ion diffusion rate across the LiFePO4/FePO4 interface. Particularly, monoclinic Li3V2(PO4)3 (LVP) is a well-known high-power-density cathode material due to its rapid ionic diffusion properties. Therefore, the structure, cycling stability, and rate performance of the blended LiFePO4/Li3V2(PO4)3 cathode material in ASLBs with oxidebased inorganic/organic-hybrid electrolytes are investigated by using powder X-ray diffraction analysis, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller sorption experiments, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and galvanostatic measurements.
Solid oxide fuel cells are clean, pollution-free technology for the electrochemical generation of electricity at high efficiency. Specially, the polarization resistance between electrolyte and electrode of SOFC unit cell is of importance, because it is desirable to develop SOFC operating at intermediate temperature below $800^{\circ}C$. The LSCF cathode prepared using modified oxalate method was investigated with different electrolyte. A precursor was prepared with oxalic acid, ethanol and $NH_4OH$ solution. The LSCF precursor was prepared at $80^{\circ}C$, and pH control was 2, 6, 8, 9 and 10. The precursor powder was calcined at $800^{\circ}C$, $1000^{\circ}C$ and $1200^{\circ}C$ for 4hrs. The crystal of LSCF powders show single phase at pH 2, 6, 8 and 9, and the average particle size was about $3{\mu}m$. The LSCF cathode with heat treatment at $1200^{\circ}C$ showed a plot of electric conductivity versus temperature. Unit cell prepared from the LSCF cathode, buffer layer between cathode and electrolyte and the LSGM, YSZ, ScSZ and CeSZ electrolyte. Also interface reaction between LSCF, buffer layer and electrolyte were measured by EPMA and the polarization resistance for unit cell with cycle measure using a Solatron 1260 analyzer.
$Li_2SiO_3$ was used as a coating material to improve the electrochemical performance of $Li[Ni_{0.8}Co_{0.15}Al_{0.05}]O_2$. $Li_2SiO_3$ is not only a stable oxide but also an ionic conductor and can, therefore, facilitate the movement of lithium ions at the cathode/electrolyte interface. The surface of the $Li_2SiO_3$-coated $Li[Ni_{0.8}Co_{0.15}Al_{0.05}]O_2$ was covered with island-type $Li_2SiO_3$ particles, and the coating process did not affect the structural integrity of the $Li[Ni_{0.8}Co_{0.15}Al_{0.05}]O_2$ powder. The $Li_2SiO_3$ coating improved the discharge capacity and rate capability; moreover, the $Li_2SiO_3$-coated electrodes showed reduced impedance values. The surface of the lithium-ion battery cathode is typically attacked by the HF-containing electrolyte, which forms an undesired surface layer that hinders the movement of lithium ions and electrons. However, the $Li_2SiO_3$ coating layer can prevent the undesired side reactions between the cathode surface and the electrolyte, thus enhancing the rate capability and discharge capacity. The thermal stability of $Li[Ni_{0.8}Co_{0.15}Al_{0.05}]O_2$ was also improved by the $Li_2SiO_3$ coating.

In this study, we investigated the long-term stability of Nd2NiO4 solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) cathodes to evaluate their chromium poisoning tolerance. Symmetrical cells consisting of Nd2NiO4 electrodes and a yttria-stabilized zirconia electrolyte were fabricated and the cell potential and polarization resistance were measured at 850 ℃ in the presence of gaseous chromium species for 800 h. Up to 500 h of operation, the cell potential remained constant at 500 mA/㎠. However, it increased slightly over the operation duration of 550-800 h. No appreciable increase was observed in the polarization resistance of the Nd2NiO4 cathode during the entire operation of 800 h. Physicochemical examinations revealed that the gaseous chromium species did not form chromium-related contamination not only in the Nd2NiO4 cathode but also at the cathode/electrolyte interface. The results demonstrated that Nd2NiO4 is resistant to chromium poisoning, and hence is a potential alternative to standard perovskite cathodes.

The effect of $ZrO_2$-coating on the electrochemical properties of the cathode material $LiNi_{0.8}Co_{0.2}O_2$ was investigated using EPMA, TEM, and EIS. In particular, we facused on the distribution of the $ZrO_2$ on the particle surface to study the relation between electrochemical properties of the coated cathode and the distribution of the coating materials in the particle. Based on the results from the composition analysis and electrochemical tests, it was found that the coating layer consisted of nano-sized $ZrO_2$ particles attached non-uniformly on the particle surface and the $ZrO_2$ layer significantly improved the electrochemical properties of the cathode by suppressing the impedance growth at the interface between the electrodes and the electrolyte.

Lithium silicate, a lithium-ion conducting ceramic, is coated on a layer-structured lithium nickel manganese oxide ($LiNi_{0.7}Mn_{0.3}O_2$). Residual lithium compounds ($Li_2CO_3$ and LiOH) on the surface of the cathode material and $SiO_2$ derived from tetraethylorthosilicate are used as lithium and silicon sources, respectively. Powder X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy analyses show that lithium silicate is coated uniformly on the cathode particles. Charge and discharge tests of the samples show that the coating can enhance the rate capability and cycle life performance. The improvements are attributed to the reduced interfacial resistance originating from suppression of solid-electrolyte interface (SEI) formation and dissolution of Ni and Mn due to the coating. An X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy study of the cycled electrodes shows that nickel oxide and manganese oxide particles are formed on the surface of the electrode and that greater decomposition of the electrolyte occurs for the bare sample, which confirms the assumption that SEI formation and Ni and Mn dissolution can be reduced using the coating process.
