Maximizing Mean Time to the Catastrophic Failure through Burn-In

  • In this paper, the problem of determining optimal burn-in time is considered under a general failure model. There are two types of failure in the general failure model. One is Type I failure (minor failure) which can be removed by a minimal repair and the other is Type II failure (catastrophic failure) which can be removed only by a complete repair. In this model, when the unit fails at its age t, Type I failure occurs with probability 1 - p(t) and Type II failure occurs with probability p(t), $0{\leq}p(t)\leq1$. Under the model, the properties of optimal burn-in time maximizing mean time to the catastrophic failure during field operation are obtained. The obtained results are also applied to some illustrative examples.

  • Catastrophic failures in power systems are rare but not uncommon events. Protection systems play an important role in the progression of events during a catastrophic failure. This paper will examine some of the historical records, and suggest possible improvements to protection systems which can have a positive impact on power system performance during catastrophic failures.

저장시설의 순간 전량 방출 시 방류벽의 월파 효과에 대한 수치모델링 (Numerical Modeling for Effect on Bund Overtopping Caused by a Catastrophic Failure of Chemical Storage Tanks)

  • 국내 산업이 발전함에 따라 유해화학물질의 사용이 급속도로 증가하고 있고, 이에 따른 화학사고 역시 증가하고 있다. 대부분의 화학사고는 저장시설에서 화학물질의 누출로 인해 발생하지만, 갑작스러운 고온 고압으로 인해 저장시설이 파열됨으로써 내부의 물질이 순간적으로 방출되는 사고 역시 발생하고 있다. 이것을 catastrophic failure라고 부르며 그 빈도는 매우 낮지만, 발생했을 때 피해 규모는 매우 크다. 국내에서는 2013년 울산의 한 현장에서 물탱크의 파열로 인해 3명의 사망자를 포함한 15명의 사상자가 발생하였고, 전 세계적으로 1919년부터 2004년까지 저장시설의 순간 전량 방출 사고가 64건 발생하였다. 저장시설에서 위험물질이 누출될 경우 외부로의 확산을 방지하는 방류벽이 존재하지만, 저장시설의 파괴로 물질이 순간적으로 방출되는 경우 내부 물질이 방류벽 바깥으로 넘치는 현상이 발생한다. 이를 월파 현상 또는 overtopping 이라 한다. 해외에서는 저장시설의 순간 전량 방출 사고에 따른 overtopping 효과를 실험을 통해 연구해왔다. 본 연구에서는 선행연구를 바탕으로 전산유체역학(CFD) 시뮬레이션을 이용하여 국내 규정을 준수하는 방류벽의 설계 조건별 overtopping 효과를 확인해 보았다. 그 결과, 방류벽 용량의 최소기준을 만족한 상태에서 높이가 높아지고 설비와의 거리가 가까워짐에 따라 내부 물질이 방류벽 외부로 빠져나가는 현상은 줄어들었다. 추가로 대기조건 및 물질의 종류, 방류벽 형상에 따른 overtopping의 효과를 확인함으로써, 순간 전량 방출 사고의 피해를 고려한 방류벽의 설계 방향 및 저감 대책을 제시하고자 한다.

수종의 섬유보강재가 복합레진의 파절강도에 미치는 영향 (FRACTURE STRENGTH OF COMPOSITE RESIN WITH VARIOUS FIBER REINFORCING MATERIALS)

  • The effect of fiber reinforcing materials on the fracture strength of composite resin was evaluated. Each ten composite resin bars reinforced by glassfiber[Fiber-Splint ML$^{(R)}$(Polydentia SA, Switzerland)], polyethylene fiber [Ribbond$^{(R)}$(Ribbond Inc., U.S.A.)] and polyaramid fiber[Kevlar$^{(R)}$(DuPont, U.S.A.)] were loaded under the 3-point compression technique. Another ten pure composite resin bars without reinforcement were used as a control group. Then mean fracture strength and standard deviation were calculated and a ANOVA and Scheffe test were used in statistics. The results were as follows: 1. Kevlar group showed the highest fracture strength as 175.5MPa (p<0.05). Fiber-Splint ML group showed the lowest fracture strength as 112.7MPa. 2. The mean value of fracture strength in Ribbond group was 136.4MPa, and that of unterated control group was 143.6MPa. No difference was found between the two groups. 3. Ribbond and Kevlar reinforcement groups showed a catastrophic failure, where complete separation of pieces occurs to a unseparated fracture pattern. The use of Kevlar reinforcement fibers with composite resin showed significant increase in the average load failure and the presence of the fibers did prevent the catastrophic crack propagation present in the unreinforced samples. The use of Ribbond reinforcement fibers with composite resin showed no significant increase in the average load failure. However, the presence of the fibers did prevent the catastrophic crack propagation. Because high strength of glassfiber are rapidly degraded on exposure to moisture and humidity. The use of Fiber-Splint ML reinforcement fibers with composite resin showed significant decrease in the average load failure and displayed catastrophic fractures.

디스크 형상 변화에 따른 파손에 끼치는 영향 (Influence of the variation of its geometry on the disk failure)

  • The speed competition of optical disk drive has been accelerated with the fast advancement of its storage density and data transmission technology. The continuous increase of the spinning speed of CD meets the unexpected and catastrophic failure of disk during the operation. The effect of its thickness and outer radius of disk were investigated to reduce stresses and J-integral around the crack tip. The effect of its thickness was considered ahead of the crack tip. In the effect of outer radius of disk, linear elastic fracture mechanics was used to obtain the critical crack length, which indicates the onset length for unstable crack growth. This approach is so significant as to detect the growing crack by disk drive before the catastrophic failure, which will provide the standard size of its safety for high-speed disk drive.

Effect of Silicon Nitride Whisker Content on the Flexural Strength of Silicon Nitride-Boron Nitride-Silicon Carbide Multi-Layer Composites

  • Multi-layer ceramic composites were prepared by tape casting followed by hot pressing using silicon nitride layer with silicon nitride whiskers, silicon nitride layer with silicon carbide particles and boron nitride-alumina layer. The whiskers were aligned during the casting. As the whisker content of the silicon nitride layer was increased up to 10 wt%, the flexural strength of the multi-layer composite was increased. However, further increase of the whisker content in the layer resulted in a rapid decrease of the strength of the composite. The results suggest that the strength of multi-layer ceramic composite showing non-catastrophic failure behavior can be significantly improved by incorporating the aligned whiskers in the layers.

Yield and Fracture of Paper

  • Traditional theories of the tensile failure of paper have assumed that uniform strain progresses throughout the sheet until an imperfection within the structure causes a catastrophic break. The resistance to tensile elongation is assumed to be elastic , at first, throughout the structure, followed by an overall plastic yield. However, linear image strain analysis (LISA) has demonstrated that the yield in tensile loading of paper is quite non-uniform throughout the structure, Traditional theories have failed to define the flaws that trigger catastrophic failure. It was assumed that a shive or perhaps a low basis weight area filled that role. Studies of the fracture mechanics of paper have typically utilized a well-defined flaw around which yield and failure could be examined . The flaw was a simple razor cut normal to the direction of tensile loading. Such testing is labeled mode I analysis. The included fla in the paper was always normal to the tensile loading direction, never at another orientation . However, shives or low basis weight zones are likely to be at random angular orientations in the sheet. The effects of angular flaws within the tensile test were examined. The strain energy density theory and experimental work demonstrate the change in crack propagation from mode I to mode IIas the initial flaw angle of crack propagation as a function of the initial flaw angle is predicted and experimentally demonstrated.

On Multipurpose Replacement Policies for the General Failure Model

  • In this paper, various replacement policies for the general failure model are considered. There are two types of failure in the general failure model. One is Type I failure (minor failure) which can be removed by a minimal repair and the other is Type II failure (catastrophic failure) which can be removed only by a complete repair. In this model, when the unit fails at its age t, Type I failure occurs with probability 1-p(t) and Type II failure occurs with probability p(t), $0{\leq}p(t){\leq}1$. Under the model, optimal replacement policies for the long-run average cost rate and the limiting efficiency are considered. Also taking the cost and the efficiency into consideration at the same time, the properties of the optimal policies under the Cost-Priority-Criterion and the Efficiency-Priority-Criterion are obtained.

  • In this paper, the properties on the optimal replacement policies for the general failure model are developed. In the general failure model, two types of system failures may occur : one is Type I failure (minor failure) which can be removed by a minimal repair and the other, Type II failure (catastrophic failure) which can be removed only by complete repair. It is assumed that, when the unit fails, Type I failure occurs with probability 1-p and Type II failure occurs with probability p, $0\leqp\leq1$. Under the model, the system is minimally repaired for each Type I failure, and it is repaired completely at the time of the Type II failure or at its age T, whichever occurs first. We further assume that the repair times are non-negligible. It is assumed that the minimal repair times in a renewal cycle consist of a strictly increasing geometric process. Under this model, we study the properties on the optimal replacement policy minimizing the long-run average cost per unit time.

  • Post-AMI VSD is an infrequent but often catastrophic complication of acute myocardial infarction In general, the mortality is associated with end organ failure due to low output syndrome. Therefore, a stable hemodynamic is necessary to prevent the end organ failure. If a supportive therapy does not accomplish it, surgical intervention should be considered. Recently, we have experinced a case of post-AMI VSD with cardiogenic shock. Early recognition and surgical repair of post-AMI VSD gave us a good result. Postoperative result was satisfactory and recovery was uneventful. We believe that early surgical repair can be lifesaving in the case of post-AMI VSD with cardiogenic shock.
