Various additives were added in small amounts on Ni/YSZ anode of SOFC (solid oxide fuel cell) in order to improve reactivity and to inhibit deactivation due to coke deposition during methane reforming using a low mole ratio steam ($H_2O/CH_4=1.5$) at $800^{\circ}C$. Ni/YSZ catalysts added with various perovskites did not show any improvement but exhibited a gradual decrease in the methane conversion. K-doped Ni/YSZ showed a steady increase and maintenance of the conversion up to 42 hours, after which there was an abrupt deactivation of catalyst owing to potassium loss by volatilization. Addition of 5% of $K_2Ti_2O_5$ on Ni/YSZ showed a stable maintenance of the conversion without K loss, and was able to prevent coke formation during a long time operation. Deactivation of catalyst during the reaction was mainly caused by the accumulation of graphidic carbon on the catalyst surface.

The present work investigates the effect of $K_2CO_3$ catalyst on steam gasification of Kideco coal and the deactivation of the catalyst due to thermal exposure and interaction with coal ash. The gasification reactivity at $700^{\circ}C$ is highly enhanced by $K_2CO_3$, which is not deactivated by the heat treatment at $T{\leq}800^{\circ}C$. TGA and XRD results prove minor decomposition of $K_2CO_3$ after the calcination at $800^{\circ}C$. $K_2CO_3$ is, however, evaporated at the higher temperature. Assuming the conversion of $K_2CO_3$ into $K_2O$ by the decomposition and into $K_2O{\cdot}2.5SiO_2$ and $KAlO_2$ by the interaction with coal ash, the reactivity of the gasification is evaluated in the presence of $K_2O$, $K_2O{\cdot}2.5SiO_2$ and $KAlO_2$. Among them, $K_2O$ is the most active, but much lower in the activity than $K_2CO_3$. XRD results show that $K_2CO_3$ could react readily with the ash above $700^{\circ}C$.
For the $CO_2$ reforming of $CH_4$, Ni catalyst was supported on La-hexaaluminate or on $\gamma$-$Al_2O_3$. The catalytic activities of Ni/La-hexaaluminate catalysts were measured at $700^{\circ}C$ using gas chromatography (GC) for 72 h, and the reaction was maintained up to 72 hfor the investigation of catalyst deactivation. The surface of each catalyst after 72 h reaction was investigated using SEM and TEM, and the composition of the carbon deposits was investigated by using EA, TPO and TGA. Ni/La-hexaaluminate shows higher resistance to coke deposition than conventional Ni/$Al_2O_3$ which seems to be due to strong interaction between Ni and the support material. As a result of the reforming reaction, various types of carbon deposits were created on catalyst surface and the amounts of them were much smaller in the case of La-hexaaluminate than on $Al_2O_3$.

Biomass gasification is a promising technology for producing a fuel gas which is useful for power generation systems. In biomass gasification processes, tar formation often causes some problems such as pipeline plugging. Thus, proper tar treatment is necessary. So far, nickel (Ni)-based catalysts have been intensively studied for the catalytic tar removal. However, the deactivation of Ni-based catalysts takes place because of coke deposition and sintering of Ni metal particles. To overcome these problems, we have been using ruthenium (Ru)-based catalyst for tar removal. It is reported by Okada et al., that a Ru/$Al_2O_3$ catalyst is very effective for preventing the carbon deposition during the steam reforming of hydrocarbons. Also, this catalyst is more active than the Ni-based catalyst at a low steam to carbon ratio (S/C). Benzene was used for the tar model compound because it is the main constituent of biomass tar and also because it represents a stable aromatic structure apparent in tar formed in biomass gasification processes. The steam reforming process transforms hydrocarbons into gaseous mixtures constituted of carbon dioxide ($CO_2$), carbon monoxide (CO), methane ($CH_4$) and hydrogen ($H_2$).

We designed a new experimental set-up for measuring activity of heterogeneously catalyzed reactions. Using this set-up, we studied reduction of carbon dioxide by carbon dioxide reforming of methane (CRM) using nickel powder as catalyst. The properties of the catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer, Emmett & Teller (BET) surface area and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques. The reactivity experiments were performed in the temperature range of $300\;-\;500^{\circ}C$. At reactivity experiment, result showed consumption of $CO_2$ and $CH_4$ with a 1:1 stoichiometry. At the same time, carbon monoxide and hydrogen were produced, which could be used for synthesizing fuels such as methanol. During the reaction, deposition of carbon on Ni was observed, which caused deactivation of the catalyst.
Numerous stationary NOx emission sources have employed a suitable deNOx technology that is typically selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx by NH3 over V2O5/TiO2-based catalysts with on-demand monolithic structures. These structured catalysts undergo a time-on-deterioration of deNOxing activity on site. Thus, we need more efficient, more deactivation-tolerant, more economic deNOx systems and for which, their performance management is essential. This review has covered details of strategies to successfully manage the performance of SCR catalysts and timely replace them to new or rejuvenated ones. Key considerations to maintain the catalyst activity will be reviewed. Details of the sequential addition of new catalysts and the replacement of life-end catalysts and their regeneration will be discussed with general guidances to determine the time for such a replacement. Finally, a better way to get more economic approaches to deNOx system management will be proposed here.
Three Ni-based catalysts with different clay as support were prepared and tested in the hydrogenation of maleic anhydride, among which Ni/clay1 showed best activity and selectivity. Over Ni/clay1 catalyst prepared by impregnation method, 97.14% conversion of maleic anhydride and 99.55% selectivity to succinic anhydride were obtained at $180^{\circ}C$ under a pressure of 1 MPa. Catalytic activity was greatly influenced by the temperature and weighted hourly space velocity. Catalyst deactivation studies showed that this catalyst have a long life time, the yield of MA still higher than 90% even after a reaction time of 60 h. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and $H_2$ temperature programmed reduction (TPR) were use to investigate the properties of the catalyst. XRD and TPR studies showed that Ni was present as $Ni^{2+}$ on the support, which indicated that there was no elemental nickel ($Ni^0$) and $Ni_2O_3$ in the unreduced samples. The formation of Ni was strong impact on catalytic activity.

$TiO_2$-Ni inverse catalysts were prepared using atomic layer deposition (ALD) process and catalytic $CO_2$ reforming of methane (CRM) reaction over catalysts (either bare Ni or $TiO_2$ coated-Ni particles) were performed using a continuous flow reactor at $800^{\circ}C$. $TiO_2$-Ni inverse catalyst showed higher catalytic reactivity at initial stage of CRM reactions at $800^{\circ}C$ comparing to bare Ni catalysts. Moreover, catalytic activity of $TiO_2$/Ni catalyst was kept high during 13 hrs of the CRM reactions at $800^{\circ}C$, whereas deactivation of bare Ni surface was started within 1hr under same conditions. The results of surface analysis using SEM, XPS, and Raman showed that deposition of graphitic carbon was effectively suppressed in a presence of $TiO_2$ nanoparticles on Ni surface, thereby improving catalytic reactivity and stability of $TiO_2$/Ni catalytic systems. We suggest that utilizing decoration effect of metal catalyst with oxide nanoaprticles is of great potential to develop metal-based catalysts with high stability and reactivity.
Various methods to degrade explosives efficiently in natural soil and water that include trinitrotoluene (TNT) have been studied. In this study, TNT in water was degraded by reduction with palladium (Pd) catalyst impregnated onto alumina (henceforth Pd-Al catalyst) and formic acid. The degradation of TNT was faster when the temperature of water was high, and the initial TNT concentration, pH, and ion concentration in water were low. The amounts of Pd-Al catalyst and formic acid were also important for TNT degradation in water. According to the experimental results, the degradation constant of TNT with unit mass of Pd-Al catalyst was $8.37min^{-1}g^{-1}$. The degradation constant of TNT was higher than the results of previous studies which used zero valent iron. 2,6-diamino-4-nitrotoluene and 2-amino-4,6-dinitrotoluene were detected as by-products of TNT degradation showing that TNT was reduced. The by-products of TNT were also completely degraded after reaction when both Pd-Al catalyst and formic acid existed. Even though there are several challenges of Pd-Al catalyst (e.g., deactivation, poisoning, leaching, etc.), the results of this study show that TNT degradation by Pd-Al catalyst and formic acid is a promising technique to remediate explosive contaminated water and soil.
Autothermal reforming(ATR) processes of hydrocarbon liquids such as diesel fuels are spotlighted as methods to produce hydrogen for Fuel cell. However, the use of heavy hydrocarbons as feedstocks for hydrogen production causes some problems which increase the catalyst deactivation by the carbon deposition. Coking can be inhibited by increasing the water dissociation on the catalyst surface. This results in catastrophic failure of whole system. Performance degradation of diesel autothermal reforming leads to increase of undesirable hydrocarbons at reformed gases and subsequently decrease the performance. In this study, perovskite-based catalysts were investigated as alternatives to substitute the noble metal catalyst for the ATR of diesel. The investigated perovskite structure was based on LaCrO3. and metals were added at the A-site to enhance oxygen ion mobility, transition metals were doped on the B-site to enhance the reformation. Substituted Lanthanum chromium perovskite were made by aqueous combustion synthesis, which can produce high surface area. And for the homogeneous fuel supply, we made ultrasonic injection system for reforming. We compared durability of evaporation system and ultrasonic system for fuel injection.
