Cut-slope due to the road construction is one of the most significant problems in the domestic case, that is, 70% of the land is covered by mountain. Moreover, typhoons or heavy rains concentrated in summer season causes the failure of cut-slope. Rock-fall and soil slope failure take 40.8% and 29.5% out of the entire domestic cut-slope failure, respectively. Rock-fall is quickly occurred by the free fall or rolling of rock fragments generally in the upper slope. Soil slope failure produces a clastics-flow and increases casualty especially when caused by heave rainfall because the velocity of the movement is verb high. Considering the car speed and rock-fall velocity, it will take a life in a moment. This study analyzes a set of field data of most recently collapsed domestic road cut-slopes to characterize these cut-slopes and the nature of rock-falls and clastics flows at each site. Based on the results, design criteria for a road alarm system are proposed, considering the relationship between the time required for clastics-flow and the velocity and braking distance of a cat at the incidence. The road alarm system proposed herein would operate instantly after a rock-fall and it will minimize damages, by warning drivels approaching to the collapse or collapsing location in advance.
Aconiti tuber butanol fraction, which is isolated from the chloroform insoluble and water soluble extract of Aconitum volubile, has been recently known to have a potent positive inotropic effect in the isolated cardiac muscle preparations of various animals. The positive inotropic mechanism of Aconiti tuber butanol fraction, in relation with the external calcium, was studied using the isolated cat papillary muscle. The positive inotropic effect was dependent on the calcium concentration in the nutrient medium, and a synergistic relation could be demonstrated between Aconiti tuber butanol fraction and the external calcium. The inotropic effect of $10^{-4}g/ml$ of Aconiti tuber butanol fraction was equivalent to that of 0.06mM of calcium in the medium. After the treatment with a calcium influx inhibitor, Verapamil$(2{\pm}10^{-7}-10^{-6}M)$, the contractile force of the papillary muscle was markedly inhibited. In these preparations, Aconiti tuber butanol fraction restored the decreased contractility in a dose-dependent manner. It was suggested that the positive inotropic effect of Aconiti tuber butanol fraction might be related with the stimulating action on the calcium influx through the slow inward calcium channels in the cardiac cell membrane. In contrast with digitalis cardiac glycoside, Aconiti tuber butanol fraction infused intravenously into the anesthetized rabbit decreased the systemic arterial blood pressure and increased the carotid blood flow, but produced no prominent changes in the heart rate.
We recently reported a development of an experimental system which can identify the release of a superoxide-dependent vasorelaxant factor from endothelial cells using a two-bath system. In the present work, we further exploited the above system and observed whether the superoxide-dependent relaxing factor(s), released from the porcine coronary artery (PCA) endothelium, was similar in relaxation to those obtained from cat thoracic aortic endothelium and cultured endothelial cells of bovine aorta. However, there was observed a novel difference among the former one and the latter two relaxing factors; the release of relaxing factor from PCA endothelium can be inhibited either by catalase or by superoxide dismutase (SOD), whereas the latter two can be inhibited only by SOD. It was further attempted to characterize the synthetic mechanisms of the relaxing factors: (1) They were readily inhibited by various lipoxygenase inhibitors (gossypol, nordihydroguaiaretic acid, AA 861, and eicosatetraynoic acid). (2) They were not inhibited by cyclooxygenase inhibitor (indomethacin) and by cytochrome P-450 monooxygenease inhibitors (proadifen and cimetidine). Thus, it is likely that these relaxing factors, although obtained from different species, show common functional roles of arteriolar relaxation. It is suggested that they are related to pathophysiological involvement of various tissue ischemia-reperfusion injuries.
The geothermal waters from the Busan area belong to Na-CI type and are characterized by much higher EC (921 ~6,520${\mu}$S/cm) and TDS (608-3,390 mg/L) than other geothermal waters in Korea. The concentration of majorions shows a weakly positive relationship with temperature except for Mg ion. The concentrations of the major cat ions have the order of Na>Ca>K>Mg. Ca ion is enriched and Mg ion is depleted compared with seawater. All Br concentrations of geothermal water are lower than those of seawater, showing a positive relationship with temperature. Generally geochemical characteristics of geothermal waters of the Busan area indicate that these waters have relatively increased Ca and Sr contents and depleted Mg, Na and K contents caused by seawater interaction with wall rock at depth during deep circulation of seawater. Base on the relationship between major ions and temperature, saline geothermal waters are diluted and are cooled by mixing of groundwaters during ascent. Isotope study and reaction path modeling of the overall geochemical system are required in order to better quantify the evolution and origin of geothermal waters in the Busan area.

Conventional method to improve the response time of the Cat-SPPCM was to increase fanning beam using cylindrical lens. But, in this case the temporal instability of this SPPCM is increased, and fanning beam plays a role as noise, so that it decreases the reflectivity. Thus, fanning beam must be controlled to improve the properties of SPPCM. In this paper, we propose the method to increase the reflectivity of SPPCM and decrease the response time by focusing line-shaped input beam into photorefractive crystal using cylindrical lens and decrease the temporal instability of output beam by using mixed-polarized beam instead of simple extraordinary polarized beam. Optical experiments show that the reflectivity of proposed SPPCM is increased twice and the response time is reduced by 15 times. Also, we observed that the temporal instability of SPPCM is reduced when the polarization angle of the mixed-polarized beam is between $10^{\circ}$ and $30^{\circ}$ . We used a $45^{\circ}-cut\;BaTiO_3$ crystal which has high electro-optical coefficients in optical experiments.
Background: Inactivation of tumor suppressor genes is believed to be important in the development of many human malignancies. Recently, several lines of evidence have indicated that the wild type p53 gene located at 17p13.3, may function as a tumor suppressor gene and that a mutant p53 gene could promote transformation by inactivating normal p53 function in a dominant negative fashion. These broad spectrum of p53 mutation in human cancers provide that mutant p53 and their protein may be potential targets of tumor diagnostic and therapeutic interventions. Method: Colony formation was performed to investigate growth suppressional ability. p53 expression pattern was examined by western blot and p53-mediated transactivation ability was assessed by CAT activity. SNU C2A cells were observed in apoptotic aspects induced by etoposide and $H_2O_2$ treatment, detecting sensitivity on agent, DNA fragmentation through agarose gel, chromatin condensation by fluorescence microscope, and cell cycle distribution by FACS. Result: 1) p53 mutant his179arg ($histidine{\rightarrow}arginine$) detected in SNU C2A cells lost transcriptional activity and growth suppression ability, showing dominant negative effect on its wild type p53. 2) Etoposide-treated SNU C2A cells induced apoptosis, exhibiting dramatic reduction of cell growth, DNA fragmentation, nuclear condensation formation of apoptotic body and increment of sub-G1 cell fraction. 3) Etoposide and $H_2O_2$-treated SNU C2A cells have no high increase of p53 expression and overexpressed p53 protein changed localization, from cytoplasm to nucleus. Also, p53-mediated transcriptional activity was increased by agents-treatment. Conclusion: SNU C2A cells coexpress wild-type and mutant p53 protein induced apoptosis in the condition on DNA damage, through localizational shift from cytoplasm to nucleus of p53 protein rather than the induction of p53 protein. SNU C2A cells derived mutant p53 his179arg abrogated both the growth supression ability and transactivational activity, showing inhibition effect on transcriptional activity of wild type p53, but did not repress the activity of wild type p53 in SNU C2A cells owing to dominant activity of wild type. These cell condition may provide new gene therapeutic implications leading effective antiproliferation of cell when mutant and wild-type p53 protein were co-expressed in cell.
The purpose of this study was to observe the tissue response to the orthodontic force applied immediately after buccal horizontal subapical osteotomy of maxilla. Five mongrel cats weighing about 2.5 Kg were used for this experiment. The left upper canine and premolar of each cat served as a experimental side and the right ones as a control side. On the experimental side, a 100gm orthodontic force was applied between the upper canine and premolar immediately after the osteotomy. On the control side, the same orthodontic force was applied without the osteotomy. After 7days, the experimental animals were sacrificed. The results were as follows: 1. In the pressure zones of the experimental group, significant increase of osteoclasts and direct resolution along the alveolar bone surface was observed as compared with those of the control group. 2. In the pressure 2ones of the experimental group, a less extensive hyalinized zone was observed than those of the control group. 3. In the pressure zones of both group, no root resorption was found. 4. Tn the tension zones of the experimental group, new bone deposition increased along the alveolar bone surface as compared with those of the control group. In conclusion, the results suggest the possibility that early orthodontic treatment after orthognathic surgery may have some benefits if the stability of the repositioned segment at surgery is secured.
The effect of nitric oxide (NO) on antioxidant system and protective mechanism against oxidative stress under UV-B radiation was investigated in leaves of maize (Zea mays L.) seedlings during 3 days growth period. UV-B irradiation caused a decrease of leaf biomass including leaf length, width and weight during growth. Application of NO donor, sodium nitroprusside (SNP), significantly alleviated UV-B stress induced growth suppression. NO donor permitted the survival of more green leaf tissue preventing chlorophyll content reduction and of higher quantum yield for photosystem II than in non-treated controls under UV-B stress, suggesting that NO has protective effect on chloroplast membrane in maize leaves. Flavonoids and anthocyanin, UV-B absorbing compounds, were significantly accumulated in the maize leaves upon UV-B exposure. Moreover, the increase of these compounds was intensified in the NO treated seedlings. UV-B treatment resulted in lipid peroxidation and induced accumulation of hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$) in maize leaves, while NO donor prevented UV-B induced increase in the contents of malondialdehyde (MDA) and $H_2O_2$. These results demonstrate that NO serves as antioxidant agent able to scavenge $H_2O_2$ to protect plant cells from oxidative damage. The activities of two antioxidant enzymes that scavenge reactive oxygen species, catalase (CAT) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) in maize leaves in the presence of NO donor under UV-B stress were higher than those under UV-B stress alone. Application of 2-(4-carboxyphenyl)-4, 4, 5, 5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3- oxide (PTIO), a specific NO scavenger, to the maize leaves arrested NO donor mediated protective effect on leaf growth, photosynthetic pigment and free radical scavenging activity. However, PTIO had little effect on maize leaves under UV-B stress compared with that of UV-B stress alone. $N^{\omega}$-nitro-L-arginine (LNNA), an inhibitor of nitric oxide synthase (NOS), significantly increased $H_2O_2$ and MDA accumulation and decreased antioxidant enzyme activities in maize leaves under UV-B stress. This demonstrates that NOS inhibitor LNNA has opposite effects on oxidative resistance. From these results it is suggested that NO might act as a signal in activating active oxygen scavenging system that protects plants from oxidative stress induced by UV-B radiation and thus confer UV-B tolerance.

Although the sesame lignans, sesamol, have been shown to possess antioxidative activity, less is known about the metabolism and antioxidative properties of sesamol, a major constituent of sesame oil. To determine the ability of sesamol to act as an antioxidant in vivo, we fed rats a diet containing 0.5% sesamol for 3 wk and studied its metabolism and its effects on oxidative stress. Body weight gain and weight of liver, kidneys were significantly higher in the rats fed sesamol than in rats fed the control diets. GST and GST-Px activities in rat liver microsomes were higher in rats fed sesamol and CAT activities were found to be significantly increased in rats fed sesamol. The formation of TBARS was decreased in the liver of rat fed the 0.5% sesamol diet than in controls. We detected sesamol metabolites in liver and kidneys of rats fed sesamol and its metabolites were present as conjugated glucuronides and sulfates. In contrast, not detected sesamol peak in other organs such as colon, small intestine and pancreas.
An ultimate goal of periodontal therapy is to stop the disease process and to regenerate a functionally-oriented periodontium destroyed as a result of periodontal disease. The purpose of this study was to observe the effect of grafting granulation tissue obtained from extraction socket on the regeneration of horizontal furcation defect. Six dogs were used in this study. All mandibular first and third premolars were extracted. At 2, 3, and 5 days after extraction, tissues were obtained from extraction socket of 1 mongrel dog and examined by light microscope. Granulation tissue obtained at 5 days after extraction was chosen as the graft material. Five days later, horizontal furcation defects were created surgically at mandibular second and fourth premolars in the right and left side of the 5 beagle dogs. The entrance area of the artificially prepared "key hole" defects were about $3\;4mm^2$. By random selections, 2 exposed furcation defects were grafted with granulation tissue obtained from extraction socket as experimental group and 1 furcation defect was as control. The flaps were replaced to their original position and sutured with 4-0 chromic cat-gut. Three dogs were sacrificed 4 weeks and two dogs 8 weeks after surgery, and the prepared specimens were examined by light microscope. At 4 weeks, furcations were filled with epithelial lining and fibrous connective tissue infiltrated with chronic inflammatory cells. New bone formation was observed in all groups. Only experimental group showed new cementum formation. At 8 weeks, new cementum, functional arrangement of new PDL fiber, root resorption, and some ankylotic union of newly formed alveolar bone and root surface were observed in all groups. Experimental group showed that epithelial downgrowth was inhibited and new bone formation was more active compared to control. The success rate of the furcation defect healing was higher in experimental group than control. These results suggested that grafting of granulation tissue obtained from extraction socket which combined with reconstructive periodontal flap surgery may promote periodontal regeneration of horizontal furcation defect.
