  • Radical scavenging principles on 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picylhydrazyl(DPPH) radical were isolated from the seeds of Cassis tora L. Assignments of the^1H-{\;}and{\;}^{13}C-NMR$ data showed the active components to be an anthraquinone, alatemin nad two naphthopyrone glycosides, nor-rubro-fusarin-6-.betha.-D-glucoside(cassiaside) and rubrofusarin-6- -D-gentiobioside. Altemin showed more potent radical sacvenging effect than the others.

  • The effects of MeOH extracts from 28 herbal medicines on monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity were investigated. MAO was purified from mouse brain and its activity was determined by fluoro-photometry using kynuramine as a substrate. Three MeOH extracts, Coptis japonica, Cinnamomum cassia and Poncirus trifoliate from the herbal medicines showed a strong inhibitory effect with less than $100\;{\mu}g/ml$ in their inhibitory amounts of $50\%$ ($IC_{50}$ values) on MAO activity. Four MeOH extracts including Evodia officinalis exhibited a mild inhibition of MAO activity with $100-200\;{\mu}g/ml$ in their $IC_{50}$ values.

  • The methanolic crude leaf extract of Acacia melanoxylon shows inhibitory effects on seed germination, shoot growth, root growth and biomass of black gram (Phaseolus mungo L. Co 1) and weeds (Cassia occidentalis L. and Cyperus rotundus L.). The post emergence treatment was given on the 8th day after sowing and 4-6 days after seedling emergence. After postemergence treatment with 20% extract concentration, wilting symptoms appeared in P. mungo and C. occidentalis while necrosis occurred in C. rotundus. The seedling growth was inhibitory at all concentrations (5%, 10%, 20%) as compared to control plants. This inhibitory effect may be due to the presence of allelochemicals like phenolics in the A. melanoxylon leaves. Different types of phenolic acids were identified.

Effect of Cassia tora L. Powder Added-Diets on the Accumulation of Cadmium in Rat (결명자 첨가식이가 흰쥐의 체내 카드뮴 축적에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of raw Cassia tora L. powder added-diets on reducing cadmium accumulation in rats. The experimental animals were Sprague-Dawley family(♂, 4 weeks) which was classified into normal group CN, compared group CS, Cd-added group Cl and groups C2, C3, C4 in which 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5% of the Cassia tora L. powder are added, respectively. The growth rate and food efficiency ratio, and the amounts of accumulated cadmium in rats for S weeks were measured and analyzed. The results are as follows; 1. The rates of weight gain decreased in the order of C3>C2>C4>Cn>Cs>Cl groups, and Cl group to which only cadmium water had been fed was the lowest among them. The correlation between groups Cl and C3 was significantly different at the 1% level. 2. Food efficiency ratio(FER) decreased in the order of C3>C2>Cs>Cn>C4>Cl, and the FERs of C3, C2, CS, CN and C4 are greater than that of Cl by 22.87, 19.59, 18.54, 14.20 and 13.17%, respectively. 3. As for the Cassia tora L. powder-added groups, the amounts of cadmium accumulated in organs and tissues, that is, the brain, heart, spleen, liver, lungs, testicles. kidney, femoral muscle and leg bones were 0.45 $\pm$ 0.04 to 0.83$\pm$0.04, 1.68$\pm$0.02 to 2.16$\pm$0.02, 3.26$\pm$0.05 to 4.62$\pm$0.27, 37.52$\pm$0.09 to 47.71$\pm$0.73, 1.07$\pm$0.10 to 1.66$\pm$0.04, 1.04$\pm$0.06 to 1.24$\pm$0.08, 36.79$\pm$0.20 to 39.61 $\pm$0.53, 0.87$\pm$0.02 to 1.00$\pm$0.02 and 0.65$\pm$0.17 to 1.27 $\pm$ 0.06 $\mu\textrm{g}$/g, respectively. 4. The accumulated Cd content for C4 was the lowest among Cassia tora L. powder-added groups. When the results for C4 are compared with those for Cl, it is observed that each cadmium content accumulated in the brain, heart spleen, liver, lungs, testicles, kidney. femoral muscle and leg bones is dropped by 49.03, 22.56, 36.02, 35.75, 41.75, 36.20, 37.00, 22.77 and 56.67 %, respectively.   • Nanoparticles have wide-scale applications in various areas, including medicine, chemistry, electronics, and energy generation. Several physical, biological, and chemical methods have been used for synthesis of silver nanoparticles. Green synthesis of silver nanoparticles using plants provide advantages over other methods as it is easy, efficient, and eco-friendly. Nanoparticles have been extensively studied as potential antimicrobials to target pathogenic and multidrug-resistant microorganisms. Their applications recently extended to development of antivirals to inhibit viral infections. In this study, we synthesized silver nanoparticles using Cinnamomum cassia (Cinnamon) and evaluated their activity against highly pathogenic avian influenza virus subtype H7N3. The synthesized nanoparticles were characterized using UVVis absorption spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Cinnamon bark extract and its nanoparticles were tested against H7N3 influenza A virus in Vero cells and the viability of cells was determined by tetrazolium dye (MTT) assay. The silver nanoparticles derived from Cinnamon extract enhanced the antiviral activity and were found to be effective in both treatments, when incubated with the virus prior to infection and introduced to cells after infection. In order to establish the safety profile, Cinnamon and its corresponding nanoparticles were tested for their cytotoxic effects in Vero cells. The tested concentrations of extract and nanoparticles (up to 500 μg/ml) were found non-toxic to Vero cells. The biosynthesized nanoparticles may, hence, be a promising approach to provide treatment against influenza virus infections.

Protection of Chocolate Products from Indian Meal Moth by Adding Cinnamon Extract to the Adhesive on the Wrapping

  • Adding cinnamon (Cinnamonum cassia Blume) extract into the adhesive used to affix stickers to a chocolate package is an effective method for protecting chocolate products from infestation by the Indian meal moth (Plodia interpunctella Hubner). Chocolate packages treated with adhesive including 0.02% and 0.025% of cinnamon extract were not infested with the Indian meal moth for up to 30 days at $28.1^{\circ}C$ and 70-75% RH, whereas 100% of the packages without the extract were infested in the no-choice test. Chocolate packages treated with adhesive including 0.02% and 0.025% of cinnamon extract in the quadruple choice test were not infested with the Indian meal moth for up to 60 days at $28.1^{\circ}C$ and 70-75% RH, whereas 100% of the packages without the extract were infested. A panel test showed that the cinnamon extract treatment would not affect consumers' choices.

Growth and Yield as Affected by Vinyl Mulching and Sowing Time in Cassia tora L. (비닐피복과 파종기 이동에 따른 결명의 생육 및 수량)

  • In order to determine the optimum sowing date of Cassia tora L., ecological characters, components and yield were investigated under vinyl-mulching and non-mulching condition. Emergence date and maturation date of vinyl-mulching condition were earlier than those of non-mulching condition. especially with maturation date being about 30 days earlier, Under vinyl-mulching condition, length of stem and pod were longer, number of branches, pods and seeds per plant were increased, stem diameter was thicker, and weight of 1000 grains was heavier. Seed yield per 10a under vinyl-mulching was twice as high as that of non-nulching condition. As sowing date was delayed, the maturation date was progressively delayed. At sowing date of April 10, plants showed the longest in length of stem and pod, the largest in number of pods per plant and number of grains per pod, and the highest in weight of 1000 grains and seed yield. Judging from the results, optimum sowing of Cassia tora L. appeared to be April 10.

Quality Evaluation of the Cinnamon Essential Oils Based on Gas Chromatographic Analysis and Cytotoxicity (가스 크로마토그래피 분석과 세포독성에 의한 계피 정유의 품질평가)

  • To evaluate the quality of the crude drugs using three kinds of Cinnamomum Cortex (CC), Vietnamese CC (VCC, the stem bark of Cinnamomum obtusifolium), periderm-peeled Chinese CC (PPCC, periderm-peeled stem bark of C. cassia), Chinese CC (CCC, stem bark of C. cassia) and a Cinnamomi Ramulus (CR, the twig of C. cassia), the four essential oils were prepared by steam distillation method. Cinnamaldehdye (CAN) and an unknown substance tentatively named hydroxy-cinnamaldehdye(HCNA) were detected in the four essential oils by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, the contents of which are significantly different one another. Vietnamese CC had the highest content of HCNA whereas CR had the highest CAN content and the lowest HCNA. Vietnamese CC exhibited the greatest cytotoxic activity against the cancer cell lines, A549, HepG-2, HL-60, P-388, U-937, and KB and CR the lowest cytotoxicity. Contents of CAN and HCNA in CCC and PPCC are positioned between VCC and CR. These results suggest that measurement of HCNA and cytotoxicity may determine the quality of CC and CR.

Activation Mode and Glycosidic Linkage of Anti-Complementary Polysaccharide Isolated from Young Stems of Cinnamomum cassia Blume (계지(桂枝)에서 정제한 보체계 활성화 다당의 작용양식과 당쇄구조)

  • The paper describes the activation mode and the glycosic linkage of anti-complementary polysaccharide isolated from Cinnamomum cassia. The polysaccharide fractions, CC-IIIa, CC-IIIb, and CC-IIIc, activated C3 component existed in normal human serum and produced C3 cleavage segments, C3a and C3b. The polysaccharide, CC-2-IIIa-3 activated the complement system both in the presence and absence of $Ca^{++}$, suggesting that it involved in both classical and alternative complement pathways. Methylation of CC-2-IIIa-3 was performed with methylsulphinyl carbanion and methyl iodide in DMSO. The methylated products was hydrolyzed, then converted into the partially methylated alditol acetates. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS) revealed derivatives of terminal $Glc{\rho}$ and $Gal{\rho}$, 1,2-linked $Rha{\rho}$, 1,6-linked $Man{\rho}$, 1,3-linked $Glc{\rho}$, 1,6-linked $Gal{\rho}$ etc.
