  • Ports in Korea have been increasing in terms of volume while they have performed functions and roles such as industrial ports in promoting industries of their hinterlands as well as commercial ports supporting imports and exports. Nevertheless, specialization degree is different from port to port by cargo type and the changes in cargo volume. This study aims to analyze the structural changes and the degree of concentration and specialization by cargo type and port between 2001 and 2020. Top 10 ports were analyzed in terms of traffic volume by categorizing liquid, dry, general cargo and containers. HHI(Herfindahl-Hirschman Index), LQ(Location Coefficient), and shift-share analysis were employed in order to identify the degree of concentration, specialization and changes in cargo volume by port and cargo type. As a result of the analysis, the degree of port concentration and specialization for each cargo of 4 categories have maintained a high level, and no significant difference were found in fluctuations over the past 20 years. As a result of calculating the flucation of cargo volume through the shift-share analysis, the growth rate of liquid cargo was high in Yeosu Gwangyang Port, Pyeongtaek Dangjin Port in dry cargo, and Busan Port in general cargo and container ports. The result implies that it is not expected that the structural changes including degree of cargo concentration, specialization and relative fluctuation of cargo volume is significant in Korean ports in the future since the effects of economies of scale and clustering were achieved to the great degree.

  • The purpose of this paper is to analyze the degree of cargo concentration at Korean ports using Theil's Entropy and to compare the results with those of Gini coefficient, Hoyle(1983), and Hirshmann-Herfindahl models. The entropy indices were compared with other models after measuring the cargo concentration for the period of 1981-2000 among the 18 Korean ports. The core results of empirical analysis are as follows: first, the empirical results of entropy indices show the following trends: all the ports(concentration except 1996's slight deconcentration), ports in Western area(deconcentration in 1990s and slight concentration in 2000), ports in Southern area(deconcentration in 1980s and 1990s except concentration in 2000), and ports in Eastern area(continuous trends of concentration). However, competition power will be decreased if concentration is increased, because of the character of entropy index. The empirical results of 4 indices except Hoyle model show the comparatively same directions in terms of trends. This study found out the similar results among the following models: All the ports(entropy index & Gini coefficient & H-H model), ports in Western area(Entropy index &Hoyle model), ports in Southern area(Entropy index & Gini coefficient), and ports in Eastern area(Entropy index & H-H index). The policy planner of Korean ports should find out the determination factors of concentration and deconcentration of each ports and decide the investment priority, size and scope for balancing the development of regional ports.

  • The purpose of this paper is to analyze the location, population growth. and cargo concentration of Korean port-cities. In the location theory, Sommer (1976) and McGee (1967) models are newly introduced, as are the Rimmer (1967), Bird (1965), Hoyle (1981) models. which were already introduced in previous studies from Korea. Analysis of population growth in the Korean port-cities is conducted using data from 1966 to 1998. Rimmer and Hoyle's concentration models are used to measure cargo concentration from 1966 to 2000. The main results of this paper are as follows: First, Korean ports are concentrated on the East Sea, the Southern Sea, and the West Sea. Their locations are closely related with the hinterland. the inland city, and growth of port-cities. In considering the foreign countrys' cases, Korean port-cities are similar to the models of Bird and Hoyle. Second, the populations of Ulsan and Pohang grew at the fastest rate in 1966-1998, while the port cities in the Honam and Jeiu region grew at much lower ratios. Most port cities are located near large industrial complexes. Third the growth rates of Gwangyang, Daesan, Pohang, Pyungtaeg, and Samchunpo increased, while those of Busan. Mukho, Masan, Mogpo, Yeosu, and Sokcho declined. Of particular note, the growth rate of Busan remained negative after the late 1980s. Fourth. empirical results using the Rimmer (1967) model indicate that Gwangyang, Daesan, Pyungtag, and Pohang have shown the concentration. But the deconcentration was shown from the Busan, Mukho, Janghang, Gunsan, Mogpo, Yeosu, Masan, Sokcho. and Jeju. Fifth, the concentration of ports located in West coast region has shown the mixed results between concentration and deconcentration except the concentration of early 1970s and 1990s. The concentration of ports located in East coast region has shown the concentration before the middle of 1980s. And deconcentration after the middle of 1980s have appeared. The Southern coast region has shown the continuous deconcentration except the partial concentration of early 1986. and 1991. Planners of Korean ports should find out the factors of concentration and deconcentration of each ports and should determine factors such as investment priority level. size and scope in order to ensure the balanced development of regional ports and port-cities.

  • This study suggests a development direction by comparing the cargo throughput of the port of Yeosu-Gwangyang during 2007-2015 with that of domestic ports. It derived a concentration index (HHI) of cargo throughput in domestic ports by Yeosu-Gwangyang port docks, shipping companies, and abroad regions. The main results were as follows. First, in terms of total cargo handled, the port of Yeosu-Gwangyang was second only to the port of Busan, and the HHIs for the past nine years were relatively low. Second, the port of Yeosu-Gwangyang ranked first for total import and export cargo throughput, showing relatively stable HHIs from 2007 to 2015. Third, the HHIs of container handling performance by national shipping companies showed stable levels below 1,800. Fourth, there were no regions where cargo volume was noticeably concentrated in the port of Yeosu-Gwangyang, and it showed cargo throughput across various abroad regions. While changes in national shipping companies are expected after the Hanjin Shipping Crisis, there should be no serious concern regarding the dependence of the port of Yeosu-Gwangyang. It is expected to develop further by realizing the full use of all its facilities, diversifying the tenants in the Yeosu-Gwangyang area, and improving the demurrage rate.

  • The purpose of this study is to outline the strategic implications of a structure analysis and trends of transferred air cargoes for the main airports of the North Asian region for 13 years from 2000 to 2012. To do so, it analyses the concentration levels using a Gini coefficient and Hirschmann Herfindahl index and represents the competitive positioning with regard to the main East Asian airports using the BCG framework and shift-share analysis. Currently, the concentration level is getting weaker in response to the emergence of Chinese airports in the north-east region. It is likely that the steady growth of air cargo of Shanghai airport (PVG) has caused the increase in concentration levels in the region. Seoul airport (ICN) may be directly in competition with PVG for air cargo in the region, giving consideration to reducing or maintaining an average increase ratio of air cargoes of ICN, NRT (Tokyo), and KIX (Osaka) for same period. In the same sense, the average increase in ratio for ICN for same period yields 1.3%, which is far behind the 6.2% and 5.2% of the north-east region and PVG respectively. Additionally, shift-share effect analysis indicates that ICN lost 422,180 tons in the north-east region during the same period, suggesting that transferred cargoes might have been forwarded to PVG.

  • With the rapid development of China's economy, the aviation industry, as an important part of transportation services, has undoubtedly achieved rapid development. However, there is hardly any academic work that was based on the development of the top airlines in the Chinese airline industry. Hence, this study provides empirical research that takes into account the longitudinal development of the top 20 airlines in China from 2009 to 2018. The throughput volumes (cargo and passenger) of the airlines were analyzed by concentration indicators, namely the concentration ratio (CR), the Herfindahl- Hirschman index (HHI), the Gini coefficient, and the shift-share analysis (SSA). In this paper, the top 20 airlines have been analyzed in terms of the passenger and cargo throughput from 2009 to 2018. The calculation results of CR6, HHI and the Gini coefficient show that the airlines were extremely deconcentrated. In addition, by comparing the ABSGR of passenger and cargo throughput, it is shown that China's aviation industry is dominated by four airlines- Air China, China Eastern Airlines, China Southern Airlines and Hainan Airlines. In the future study, it is necessary to explore growth strategies to find niche markets for passenger and cargo transportation.

  • The ship selection by consignors has two steps to carry their cargo. The first step is to select according to time schedule of ships and amount of cargo, and the second one is re-selection by concentrating different consignors' cargo into a unit that can be carried by single ship. Up to now, these steps are usually done by hands leading to inefficiency. The purpose of our paper is to form a logistics chain to minimize the overall sum of logistics cost by selecting ships for consignors' cargo using negotiation methodology between agents. Through concentration and distribution of cargo, maximization of global profit derived from searching optimal point in trade-off between inventory cost and freight rate cost. It is settled by the negotiation between consignors. In the experiments, two methods of the first-step of ship selection: EPDS(Earliest Possible Departure-Date Scheduling) and LPDS(Latest Possible Departure-Date Scheduling) coupled with the second-step ship concentration method using the negotiation were shown. From this, we deduced inventory cost, freight rates and logistics cost according SBF(Scheduling Bundle Factor) and analyzed the result. We found it will minimize the total logistics cost if we use negotiation method with EPDS.

  • This study analyzes the optimal location of gas detectors through the gas dispersion in a cargo compressor room of a 174K LNG carrier equipped with high-pressure cargo handling equipment; in addition, we propose a reasonable method for determining the safety regulations specified in the new International Code of the Construction and Equipment of Ships Carrying Liquefied Gases in Bulk (IGC). To conduct an LNG gas dispersion simulation in the cargo compressor room-equipped with an ME-GI engine-of a 174 K LNG carrier, the geometry of the room as well as the equipment and piping, are designed using the same 3D size at a 1-to-1 scale. Scenarios for a gas leak were examined under high pressure of 305 bar and low pressure of 1 bar. The pinhole sizes for high pressure are 4.5, 5.0, and 5.6mm, and for low pressure are 100 and 140 mm. The results demonstrate that the cargo compressor room will not pose a serious risk with respect to the flammable gas concentration as verified by a ventilation assessment for a 5.6 mm pinhole for a high-pressure leak under gas rupture conditions, and a low-pressure leak of 100 and 140 mm with different pinhole sizes. However, it was confirmed that the actual location of the gas detection sensors in a cargo compressor room, according to the new IGC code, should be moved to other points, and an analysis of the virtual monitor points through a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation.

  • This study analyzed changes in the competitive structure of the global shipping container market and the appropriate capacity of the container fleet in Korea from three perspectives. The competitive market analysis applied the market concentration ratio and Hirschman-Herfindahl index, while the appropriate capacity analysis was based on the following three aspects: (1) Fleet capacity to secure competitiveness in the global shipping alliance; (2) Fleet capacity to increase national fleet coverage of domestic import and export container cargo; and (3) Fleet capacity analysis through the panel model considering the characteristics of the major shipping countries. Analysis of the global shipping container market reveals an oligopoly industry, and Korea's container fleet capacity is insufficient across all three analyses.

  • The present paper deals with the comparative study of resistance performance with refrigerated ice and synthetic ice according to the variation of hull form characteristics. The resistance test has been conducted in pack ice condition in each concentration condition. Stem angle has been chosen as main parameters for the variation of hull form characteristics. The correlation of performance between with the refrigerated ice and with the synthetic ice has been shown according to the variation for stem angles. The present study show the possibility of ice test in general towing tank with synthetic ice for the time-consuming research such as hull form optimization although that is confined in pack ice condition. The more parametric study for the properties of synthetic ice is expected to be conducted to have more close correspondence for the test results of refrigerated ice in near future.
