  • Microbial electrosynthesis has recently been considered a potentially sustainable biotechnology for converting carbon dioxide (CO2) into valuable biochemicals. In this study, bioelectrochemical acetate production from CO2 was studied in an H-type two-chambered reactor system with an anaerobic microbial consortium. Metal-rich mud flat was used as the inoculum and incubated electrochemically for 90 days under a cathode potential of -1.1 V (vs. Ag/AgCl). Four consecutive batch cultivations resulted in a high acetate concentration and productivity of 93 mmol/L and 7.35 mmol/L/day, respectively. The maximal coulombic efficiency (rate of recovered acetate from supplied electrons) was estimated to be 64%. Cyclic voltammetry showed a characteristic reduction peak at -0.2~-0.4 V, implying reductive acetate generation on the cathode electrode. Furthermore, several electroactive acetate-producing microorganisms were identified based on denaturing- gradient-gel-electrophoresis (DGGE) and 16S rRNA sequence analyses. These results suggest that the mud flat can be used effectively as a microbial source for bioelectrochemical CO2 conversion.

  • Inactivation of Leuconostoc sp. isolated from kimchi using carbon dioxide under pressure was investigated in terms of operating parameters in order to evaluate its feasibility as a novel nonthermal process. Inactivation rates increased with increasing pressure, temperature and exposure time, but with decreasing working volume. Microbial reduction of 3 log cycles was achieved within 150 min under a $CO_2$ pressure of $60\;kg/cm^2$ at 30^{\circ}C$. It was confirmed that microbial inactivation by the high pressure $CO_2$ was governed essentially by the characteristic of $CO_2$ mass transfer and thus penetration of $CO_2$, into cells was a rate limiting step to determine efficiency of the inactivation process. The experimental results suggested that the high pressure $CO_2$ treatment could be used as one of the effective nonthermal methods for preserving foods.

  • Emission regulations on greenhouse gas(GHG) in automobiles have been stringent because of global warming effect. Over 90% of total GHG emission are carbon dioxides and about 20% of this $CO_2$ emission are emitted from automobiles. In this study, 110 vehicles were tested on a chassis dynamometer and $CO_2$ emissions and fuel economy were measured in order to investigate the characteristics of $CO_2$ emission factor from passenger vehicles which are the most dominant vehicle type in Korea. The characteristics of emissions in accordance with displacements, gross vehicle weight, NIER and CVS-75 speed mode were discussed. It was found that vehicles having larger displacement, heavier gross vehicle weight, automatic transmission and specially at cold start emitted more $CO_2$ emissions. From these results, correlation between $CO_2$ emission and fuel economy was also obtained. This study may contribute to evaluate domestic greenhouse gas emissions and establish national policies on climate changes in future.

  • Indoor air quality(IAQ) in museum is very important for protection of cultural properties. In our study, we measured air pollutants($NO_x, NH_3, SO_2, O_3$, CO, $CO_2$, TSP), temperature and humidity to evaluate IAQ of national central museum. Indoor carbon dioxide and TSP concentrations were higher than outdoor concentrations. Temperature, huinidity and TSP had large deviation depending on air conditioning operates or not. Indoor gas phase pollutants except $CO_2$ were lower than outdoor concentrations, but $SO_2$ concentration was high in storage. $CO_2$ and TSP were influenced by the number of spectators.

  • The activated carbon fibers of different surface area and pore structures were modified by carbon deposition from the pyrolysis of benzene, in an attempt to obtain carbon molecular sieves of high adsorption capacity and selectivity for the separation of $CO_2/CH_4$ gas mixtures. The ACFs molecular sieves prepared from different temperature and time were tested by the static adsorption of $CO_2$ and $CH_4$ gas, and their pore structures were characterized by the $N_2$ adsorption isotherms. We are able to prepare ACF molecular sieve with good selectivity for $CO_2/CH_4$ separation and showing acceptable adsorption capacities from the change of porosity by carbon deposition of pyrolyzed benzene.

  • The experiments for separation and recovery of CO$_2$ were conducted by aqueous sodium glycinate solution, which is one of the amino acid salts, as an absorbent of CO$_2$ in this study. Absorption capacities of aqueous MEA and sodium glycinate solution according to partial pressure of CO$_2$ were evaluated by vapor-liquid equilibrium tests of 20 wt% and 30 wt% above-mentioned absorbents, respectively. In addition, the pilot scale(2 t-CO$_2$/day) experiments based on prior results were carried out. As a result, CO$_2$ removal efficiency of aqueous sodium glycinate solution was lower than that of aqueous MEA solution. This phenomenon means that CO$_2$ removal efficiency of aqueous sodium glycinate solution mainly depends on its molecular structure. Consequently, the first application of certain amino acid salt, as an absorbent of CO$_2$, to pilot plant of 2 t-CO$_2$/day scale was carried out in our country.

  • We studied graphene synthesis to porous Cu to improve the characteristics of carbon dioxide reduction of cu. Cu powders were formed through Thermal Chemical Vapor Deposition(TCVD) to Porous Cu/Graphene structures synthesized with graphene. As a result of electrochemical experiments using a 0.1 M $KHCO_3$ electrolyte at an applied potential of -1.0 V to -1.4 V, the current density of Porous Cu/Graphene was 1.8 times higher than that of Porous Cu. As a result of evaluating the product, CO and $H_2$ were generated to Porous Cu electrode. On the other hand, the product of porous Cu/Graphene produced CO, $CH_4$ and $C_2H_4$. It is considered that the graphene causes longer carbon dioxide adsorption time, which means that the intermediates formed during the reaction remain on the electrode surface for a longer time. As a result, it can be concluded that the production reaction of the C2 compound could be continuously performed.

  • Dam reservoirs have been reported to contribute significantly to global carbon emissions, but unlike natural lakes, there is considerable uncertainty in calculating carbon emissions due to the complex of emission pathways. In particular, the method of calculating carbon dioxide (CO2) net atmospheric flux (NAF) based on a simple gas exchange theory from sporadic data has limitations in explaining the spatiotemporal variations in the CO2 flux in stratified reservoirs. This study was aimed to analyze the spatial and temporal CO2 distribution and mass balance in Daecheong Reservoir, located in the mid-latitude monsoon climate zone, by applying a two-dimensional hydrodynamic and water quality model (CE-QUAL-W2). Simulation results showed that the Daecheong Reservoir is a heterotrophic system in which CO2 is supersaturated as a whole and releases CO2 to the atmosphere. Spatially, CO2 emissions were greater in the lacustrine zone than in the riverine and transition zones. In terms of time, CO2 emissions changed dynamically according to the temporal stratification structure of the reservoir and temporal variations of algae biomass. CO2 emissions were greater at night than during the day and were seasonally greatest in winter. The CO2 NAF calculated by the CE-QUAL-W2 model and the gas exchange theory showed a similar range, but there was a difference in the point of occurrence of the peak value. The findings provide useful information to improve the quantification of CO2 emissions from reservoirs. In order to reduce the uncertainty in the estimation of reservoir carbon emissions, more precise monitoring in time and space is required.

  • Biogas, composed mainly of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2), is a renewable gas that can serve as an alternative energy source. In this study, we developed a new microwave reformer and analyzed its reforming characteristics. We observed that higher temperatures of the microwave receptor led to increased reforming efficiency. By supplying appropriate amounts of methane and steam, we could prevent carbon generated from the thermal decomposition reaction of carbon dioxide from depositing on the catalytic active layer, thus avoiding the inhibition of catalytic activity. Hydrogen generation was enhanced when maintaining the biogas ratio and steam supply at adequate levels. Increasing the SiC ratio in the receptor improved the uniformity of temperature distribution and growth rate, resulting in higher conversion rates of the reforming process.

  • Highly toxic gases such as hydrogen sulfide ($H_2S$), carbon dioxide ($CO_2$), and ammonia ($NH_3$) are generated by both nature and human activities and affect human health. In this research, activated carbon combined with $Ca(OH)_2$ and $CaCO_3$ (AC-CO and AC-CC, respectively) were fabricated and applied in absorbing toxic gases from air pollutants. Activated charcoal powder was compressed in the form of pellets and used in the designated conditions. The optimum operating conditions and material properties, such as adsorption capacity, effect of weight ratio of the mixture, and hardness, have been investigated after combining with the calcium derivative. The good performance exhibited in this study suggests that this material is expected to be an effective and economically viable adsorbent for $NH_3$, $CO_2$, and $H_2S$ removal from the air system.
