  • Diamond-like carbon (DLC) has many outstanding properties such as low friction, high wear resistance and corrosion resistance. However, it is difficult to achieve enough adhesion on the metal substrates because of weak bonding between DLC film and the metal substrate. The purpose of this study is to enhance an adhesion of DLC film. For improving adhesion, the substrate was treated by active screen plasma nitriding before DLC film deposing. Nitrided substrates were investigated by Glow Discharge Spectrometer (GDS), Micro-Vickers Hardness. DLC films were deposited on several metals by linear ion source, and characteristics of the films were investigated using nano-indentation, Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM). The adhesion was measured by scratch tester. The adhesion of DLC films was increased when nitriding layer was formed before DLC deposition. Therefore, the adhesion of DLC film can be enhanced as increasing the hardness of materials.

  • Bioethanol has attracted much attention in recent decades as a sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative energy source. In this study, we compared the production of bioethanol by Candida molischiana and Saccharomyces cerevisiae at different initial concentrations of cellobiose and glucose. The results showed that C. molischiana can utilize both glucose and cellobiose, whereas S. cerevisiae can only utilize glucose. The ethanol yields were 43-51% from different initial concentrations of carbon source. In addition, different concentrations of microcrystalline cellulose (Avicel) were directly converted to ethanol by a combination of Trichoderma reesei and two yeasts. Cellulose was first hydrolyzed by a fully enzymatic saccharification process using T. reesei cellulases, and the reducing sugars and glucose produced during the process were further used as carbon source for bioethanol production by C. molischiana or S. cerevisiae. Sequential culture of T. reesei and two yeasts revealed that C. molischiana was more efficient for bioconversion of sugars to ethanol than S. cerevisiae. When 20 g/l Avicel was used as a carbon source, the maximum reducing sugar, glucose, and ethanol yields were 42%, 26%, and 20%, respectively. The maximum concentrations of reducing sugar, glucose, and ethanol were 10.9, 8.57, and 5.95 g/l, respectively, at 120 h by the combination of T. reesei and C. molischiana from 50 g/l Avicel.

  • It was well recognized that the damages associated mainly with the aging of civil infrastructures were one of very serious problems for assurance of safety and reliability. Recently carbon fiber sheet(CFS) has been widely used for reinforcement and rehabilitation of damaged concrete beam. However, the fundamental mechanism of load transfer and its load-resistant for carbon fiber sheet reinforced concrete are not fully understood. In this study, three point bending test has been carried out to understand the damage progress and the micro-failure mechanism of CFS reinforced mortars. For this purpose, four different types of specimens are used, that is, mortar, steel bar reinforced mortar, CFS reinforced mortar, and steel bar and CFS reinforced morter. Acoustic Emission(AE) technique was used to evaluate the characteristics of damage progress and the failure mechanism of specimens. in addition, two-dimensional AE source location was also performed to monitor crack initiation and propagation processes for these specimens.

  • Country-specific emission factors should be developed and used instead of IPCC defaults to improve national GHG inventories to Tier 2 and above. Since the country-specific emission factors depend on the type of energy source, energy process, and time trend, identifying the value of each energy source is an important part of building an accurate inventory. In this study, calorific value and carbon emission factor for petroleum energy sources on the basis of calorific value conversion standard for energy source, which are notified in Korea, are collected by 2013 and 2016, and calorific value, carbon content and carbon emission factor And a comparative analysis was conducted. In addition, net calorific values and carbon emission factors calculated for each petroleum based energy source are compared with those shown in 2006 IPCC Guideline.

  • Field emission characteristics of carbon nanotubes(CNTs) on four kinds of metallic substrates have been investigated under the irradiation of a laser. The field emission measurement reveals that after laser irradiation the current was increased and new humps at the field emission current was found. The current enhancement was thought to have occurred due to the fact that the electrical contact between CNTs and metals was improved due to the irradiation of the laser.

  • This paper presents a heating source of carbon nanofibers for the efficiency and the drying performance of laundry dryer, and focuses on the applicability-evaluation of its source. To design the proposed heating module, experiments were conducted in terms of surface temperature and surface temperature distribution characteristics of carbon nanofiber lamps. The surface temperature of the lamps increased linearly with increment of a current to flow a lamp and revealing the increasing pattern as the length of the ramps is shorter. The proposed heating source was evaluated based on drying efficiency, moisture evaporation rate at laundry, and internal temperature of a drum during drying process. The drying efficiency satisfied a 45% which is specified in KS C 9319. The moisture evaporation rate and the internal temperature of the drum were respectively 98.88% and $61.1^{\circ}C$, which are similar to that of S's company dryer. From the evaluation and actual drying test results, the proposed carbon nanofiber lamp heating module is considered to be applicable as a heat source for laundry dryer in terms of drying efficiency and drying performance. it is possible to obtain a heat source at a high temperature, an excellent calorific value, an improvement in drying performance, and an effect of sterilizing laundry due to the emission of far-infrared rays. In addition to the applicability, the difference of the drying efficiency between the dryers was analyzed in detail based on the power consumption of the heat sources.

  • 1,5-Dihydroxy-3-methoxy-7-methylanthracene-9,10-dione (shiraiarin) is a kind of antitumor and antibacterial anthraquinone, and was produced for the first time from the submerged fermentation of Shiraia bambusicola, as confirmed by ESI-MS and NMR. The production of shiraiarin was significantly influenced when varying the carbon source, and a high amount of shiraiarin was only achieved when using lactose. The production of shiraiarin was also stimulated when using $NaNO_3$ as the nitrogen source, whereas other nitrogen sources inhibited its production. Shiraiarin was formed during the stationary phase with a pH value higher than 8. The production of shiraiarin was inhibited by sporulation.

  • Thermodynamic calculation for the CVD of SiC from methyltrichlorosilane(MTS) was done in some range of deposition condition to identify optimum condition. The results show that the most considerable chemical species are chloride and chlorosilane for silicon source and methane and acetylene for carbon source. In order to yield single phase ${\beta}$-SiC it is believed that optimum temperature range is between 1500 and $1700^{\circ}k$. With increasing temperature, stable phase is changed from Si+SiC phase to C+SiC phase. It is believed because equilibrium concentration of silicon source decrease and equilibrium concentration of carbon source increases with increasing temperature.

  • As part of an extensive program on the microbiological oxidation of hydrocarbons, reaction conditions and nutrients consumption of candida lipolytica grown on alkane as carbon source were studied. For optimum growth of yeast, the conditions of pH 5, temperature $30^{\circ}C$, carbon number $C_{16}$& $C_{18}$aeration 25.6 1/l/hr, agitation 3000 r.p.m., hydrocarbon concentration 10% were obtained. Carbon and nitrogen balance related to these conditions were also investigated. In the course of this investigation, some significant effects of pH and carbon number of hydrocarbon variation were observed.

  • We developed a novel growth method of aligned carbon nanotubes. Aligned carbon nanotubes are grown on a metal catalyst on a glass substrate using biased Helicon plasma chemical vapor deposition (HPECVD) of $CH_4/H_2$ gases from 400 C to 500 C. The Helicon plasma source is one of the high-density plasma sources and is promising for low temperature carbon deposition. A Ni film was used as a catalyst to reduce the activation energy of the nanotubes' growth. The carbon nanotubes were deposited on the nickel catalysis layer selectively.
