  • In this paper, we evaluate structural integrity of the wearable robot by using finite element analysis, which is made of CFRP(Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic) composite materials to be lightened. On the basis of the ASTM(American Standard Test Method), mechanical tests of the material are carried out in tensile, compressive and shear test for analytical evaluation. With the tested composite material, the main frame and two femoral frames of the robot is redesigned to satisfy the lightening design requirements. It is verified with the structural analysis that the redesigned frames are good for the part of the wearable robot.

  • The adhesion strength as well as the electrochemical properties of $LiNi_{0.4}Mn_{0.4}Co_{0.2}O_2$ electrodes containing various conductive carbons (CC) such as fiber-like carbon, vapor-grown carbon fiber, carbon nanotubes, particle-like carbon, Super P, and Ketjen black is compared. The morphological properties is investigated using scanning electron microscope to reveal the interaction between the different CC and the active material. The surface and interfacial cutting analysis system is also used to measure the adhesion strength between the aluminum current collector and the composite film, and the adhesion strength between the active material and the CC of the electrodes. The results obtained from the measured adhesion strength points to the fact that the structure and the particle size of CC additives have tremendous influence on the binding property of the composite electrodes, and this in turn affects the electrochemical property of the configured electrodes.

  • This paper presents the strength safety of a hydrogen gas composite fuel tank, which is analyzed using a FEM based on the criterion of US DOT-CFFC and Korean Standard. A hydrogen gas composite tank in which is fabricated by an aluminum liner of 6061-T6 material and carbon fiber wound composite layers of T800-24K is charged with a filling pressure of 70MPa and a gas storage capacity of 130 liter. The FEM results indicated that von Mises stress, 255.2MPa of an aluminum liner inner tank is low compared with that of 95% yield strength, 272MPa. And a carbon fiber stress ratio of a composite fuel tank is 3.11 in hoop direction and 3.04 in helical direction. These data indicate that a carbon fiber gas tank is safe in comparison to that of a recommended criterion of 2.4 stress ratio. Thus, the proposed composite tank with 130 liter capacity and 70MPa filling pressure is usable in strength safety.

  • Carbon has been widely used for the material of plasma facing components in fusion experiment devices like a tokamak, because carbon has good thermal and mechanical properties. However carbon gas a relatively high ougassing rate. Therefore the amount and the surface area of the carbon material used in the vessel will determine the background pressure of the vacuum vessel. In this experiment influences of carbon on the vacuum performance was investigated by measuring chamber pressure, ougassing rater and gas spectrum of carbon fiber composite (CFC) samples in various situations, pumping out, chamber baking, carbon heating (250~$500^{\circ}C$), exposure to atmosphere for maintenance of in-vessel components, etc., occurring routinely during tokamak operations.

  • This study has been investigated to apply fiber reinforced composites instead of asbestos as a friction material. the reinforced used was E-glass fiber and binder resin was phenol having good mechanical properties and heat resistance. And it has been also investigated the effect of molding conditions and some additives such and carbon black, alumina and rubber powder in E-glass fiber/phenol resin composite on the friction on the friction and wear characteristics. As a result, it was found that the molding conditions of E-glass fiber/phenol resin composites for friction materials had to be different from those of phenol resin and was found that the wear rate of E-glass fiber/phenol resin composites added alumina powder was higher than of composites added carbon black in the same wear distance. And it was found that friction coefficient of E-glass/phenol resin composites added carbon black was decreased and that of the composites added the powder of natural rubber and ABS rubber were increased compared to the composites.

  • This paper presents the feasibility on the application of composite coil spring, which has great interest in the automobile industry. In order to obtain much lighter weight of the composite spring, it will be necessary to optimize the design variables such as fiber angles and diameter of coil, etc. First of all, mechanical properties were measured to consider the effects of FVR and ply angles for carbon fiber composite material. And the shear modulus with respect to ply angles were derived based on twisting angles calculated by torsional beam model. Next we determined the design parameters of composite coil spring, which has equivalent spring rate to the steel coil spring. In order to assess the proposed method, finite element model of the composite spring was developed and analysed to obtain the spring constant. The results showed that static spring rate of the composite spring was in a good agreement with that of steel spring.

  • Although the net-shape molding of composites is generally recommended, molded composites frequently requires cutting or grinding due to the dimensional inaccuracy for precision machine elements. During the composite machining operations such as cutting and grinding, the temperature at the grinding area may increase beyond the allowed limit due to the low thermal conductivity of composites, which might degrade the matrix of composite. Therefore, in this work, the temperature at the grinding point during surface grinding of carbon fiber epoxy composite was measured. The grinding temperature and surface roughness were also measured to investigate the surface grinding characteristics of the composites. The experiments were performed both under dry and wet grinding conditions with respect to cutting speed, feed speed, depth of cut and stacking angle. From the experimental investigation, the optimal conditions for the composite surface grinding were suggested.

  • Carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) is a composite material useful in the aerospace and automotive industries because of its light weight and high strength. In this study, side milling tests were carried out using AlCrN, diamond-like carbon (DLC), and diamond-coated end mills. Additionally, a comparison study according to the cobalt content was conducted. Thus, tool wear and surface quality were examined and the influences of using coating and a certain material type were analyzed. The surface roughness of the machined surface was measured. Microscope observations revealed that the CFRP fiber at the machined surface was not damaged even at a cutting distance of 3,000 mm. Therefore, this study showed that the diamond-coated end mill containing 6% cobalt is appropriate for milling CFRP.

  • Excellent environmental durability and handy installation procedure as well as high specific strength and stiffness have introduced fiber-reinforced polymeric composite materials into the civil and architectural engineering field. This study presents the considerably enhanced strength characteristics of the mortal beams by being reinforced with epoxy-bonded carbon fiber sheets(CFS). Three point bending and Charpy impact tests were performed on both of bare and reinforced mortar specimens. The influences of length, and the number of reinforcing plies were investigated. Strength reduction due to pre-existent notch was lessened dramatically. The acoustic emission(AE) measurement revealed the progressive damage process in reinforced specimens.
