  • Double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) were grown with vertical alignment on a Si wafer by using catalytic thermal chemical vapor deposition. This study investigated the effect of pre-annealing time of catalyst on the types of CNTs grown on the substrate. The catalyst layer is usually evolved into discretely distributed nanoparticles during the annealing and initial growth of CNTs. The 0.5-nm-thick Fe served as a catalyst, underneath which Al was coated as a catalyst support as well as a diffusion barrier on the Si substrate. Both the catalyst and support layers were coated by using thermal evaporation. CNTs were synthesized for 10 min by flowing 60 sccm of Ar and 60 sccm of H2 as a carrier gas and 20 sccm of C2H2 as a feedstock at 95 torr and $750^{\circ}C$. In this study, the catalyst and support layers were subject to annealing for 0~420 sec. As-grown CNTs were characterized by using field emission scanning electron microscopy, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy. The annealing for 90~300 sec caused the growth of DWCNTs as high as ~670 ${\mu}m$ for 10 min while below 90 sec and over 420 sec 300~830 ${\mu}m$-thick triple and multiwalled CNTs occurred, respectively. Several radial breathing mode (RBM) peaks in the Raman spectra were observed at the Raman shifts of 112~191 cm-1, implying the presence of DWCNTs, TWCNTs, MWCNTs with the tube diameters 3.4, 4.0, 6.5 nm, respectively. The maximum ratio of DWCNTs was observed to be ~85% at the annealing time of 180 sec. The Raman spectra of the as-grown DWCNTs showed low G/D peak intensity ratios, indicating their low defect concentrations. As increasing the annealing time, the catalyst layer seemed to be granulated, and then grown to particles with larger sizes but fewer numbers by Ostwald ripening.

  • The main cause of global warming is carbon dioxide generated from the use of fossil fuels, and active research on the reduction of carbon is in progress to slow down the increasing global warming. Wind turbines generate electricity from kinetic energy of wind and are considered as representative for an energy source that helps to reduce carbon emission. Since the kinetic energy of wind is proportional to the cube of the wind speed, the intensity of wind affects wind farm construction validity the most. Therefore, to organize a wind farm, validity analysis should be conducted first through measurement of the wind resources. To facilitate the approval and permission and reduce installation cost, measuring sensors should be installed at locations below the actual wind turbine hub. Wind conditions change in shape with air density, and air density is most affected by the variable sterrain and surface type. So the magnitude of wind speed depends on the ground altitude. If wind conditions are measured at a location below the wind turbine hub, the wind speed has to be extrapolated to the hub height. This correction of wind speed according to height is done with the Deacon equation used in the statistical analysis of previously observed data. In this study, the optimal Deacon equation parameter was obtained through the analysis of the correction of the wind speed error with the Deacon equation based on the characteristics of terrain.

  • Decomposition of carbon dioxide is studied using $Ar/CO_2$ mixture inductively coupled plasmas (ICP). Argon gas was added to generate plasma which has high electron density. To measure decomposition rate of $CO_2$, optical emission actinometry is used. Changing input power, pressure and mixture ratio, the plasma parameters and the spectrum intensity were measured using single Langmuir probe and spectroscope. The source characteristic of Carbon dioxide ICP observed from the obtained plasma parameters. The decomposition rate is evolved depending on the reaction and discharge mode. This result is analyzed with both the measurement of the plasma parameters and the dissociation mechanism of $CO_2$.

  • Phosphor with phosphorus doped with rare earth ions was investigated by searching Sr and Eu phosphors suitable for substitution of Eu ions with similar ionic radius to polyphosphate host. The $NaSr(PO_3)_3$ phosphor was synthesized by the solid state method and the $NaSr(PO_3)_3:Eu^{2+}$ phosphor was prepared by the carbon thermal reduction method. Both of the phosphors were identified by X - ray diffraction. The excitation and emission spectra of $NaSr(PO_3)_3:Eu^{3+}$ increased fluorescence intensity and intensity quenching with increasing $Eu^{3+}$ concentration. The higher the $Eu^{3+}$ concentration in the emission spectrum, the higher the local symmetry of $Eu^{3+}$ environment. The mechanism of concentration quenching, in which fluorescence decreases due to the energy transfer between $Eu^{2+}$ ions with the closest critical distance between $Eu^{2+}$ ions with increasing $Eu^{2+}$ ion concentration, was confirmed in the emission spectrum of $NaSr(PO_3)_3:Eu^{2+}$ concentration. It is possible to change the fluorescent region through the post-processing of single rare earth ion added phosphors, and it is possible to change the fluorescence by applying the energy transfer and concentration quenching mechanism according to the local symmetry of $Eu^{3+}$ will be used for high phosphor development.

  • Atmospheric carbon dioxide enrichment ($eCO_2$) often increases soil nitrous oxide ($N_2O$) emissions, but the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. Emerging evidence suggests that $eCO_2$ alters plant N preference in favor of ammonium ($NH_4{^+}-N$) over nitrate ($NO_3{^-}-N$). Yet, whether and how this attributes to the enhancement of $N_2O$ emissions has not been investigated. We examined the effects of $eCO_2$ on soil $N_2O$ emissions in the presence of two N forms ($NH_4{^+}-N$ or $NO_3{^-}-N$), using wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) as a model plant. Our results showed that N forms dominated $eCO_2$ effects on plant and microbial N utilization, and thus soil $N_2O$ emissions. Elevated $CO_2$ significantly increased the rate and the sum of $N_2O$ emissions by three to four folds when $NO_3{^-}-N$, but not $NH_4{^+}-N$, was supplied. Enhanced $N_2O$ emission was related to the reduced plant $NO_3{^-}-N$ uptake in wheat. We propose a new conceptual model in which $eCO_2$-inhibition of plant $NO_3{^-}-N$ uptake and/or $CO_2$-enhancement of soil labile C enhances the N and/or C availability for denitrifiers and increases the intensity and/or the duration of $N_2O$ emissions. Together, these findings suggest that to enhance plant N use efficiency and reduce $N_2O$ emission, crop breeding and management need to consider altered plant preference of N sources under future $CO_2$ scenarios.

  • In this study, emission characteristics of volatile odorant species released from urine samples were investigated in relation to two key variables: [1] storage conditions before sampling and [2] incubation conditions during sampling. To this end, 20 offensive odorants were quantified by four different analytical systems and then sorted according to seven functional groups. It is indicated that benzene (B), styrene (S), isobutyl alcohol (i-BuAl), butyl acetate (BuAc), butyraldehyde (BA), isovaleraldehyde (IA), and valeraldehyde (VA) did not contribute to urine odor because their concentration levels were measured below detection limits in all samples. On the other hand, emission concentrations of toluene (T), methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), methyl mercaptan ($CH_3SH$), carbon disulfide ($CS_2$), and ammonia ($NH_3$) were generally higher than other compounds. In terms of odor intensity (OI), $CH_3SH$ and $NH_3$ showed the largest OI values in the range of 2~4. According to t-test (storage approach and urine temperature), the results of T, $CS_2$, and $NH_3$ were statistically distinguished from each other in terms of differences in sampling temperature. Likewise, the emissions of certain odorants from urine samples were affected by changes in sample treatment conditions to a degree.

  • Biofuls are considered as an option to reduce greenhouse gases emission, increase energy supply diversity and security of supply, as well as an opportunity for job creation and rural development. First of all, biofuls technologies have been promoted as a means for reducing the carbon intensity of the transport sector. Hence, in the last decade biofuels production has been driven by governmental policies. The key instruments widely adopted to foster production and increase consumption have been mandatory blending targets, tax exemptions and sibsidies. As one of the most powerful instruments, biofuel mandates require fuel producers to produce a pre-defined amount (or share) of biofuels and blend them with petroleum fuel. National biofuels mandates are in place 35 countries and partially in place in 6 countries. In this study, we reviewed status of global biofuels policies to reduce greenhouse gases in the European Union, United States and other countires worldwide. Especially, we discussed representative biofuels mandates policies same as Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS, US), Renewable Transport Fules Obligation (RTFO, UK) in transport sector.

  • In this study, a laminated composite material with dispersing aluminum oxide powder between the CFRP laminate plies, and also CFRP composites without aluminium oxide powder were fabricated for Mode I experiments using the DCB specimen and a tensile test. The behavior of the crack and the change of the interfacial fracture toughness were evaluated. Also in order to evaluate the damage mechanism for the crack extension, the AE sensor on the surface of the DCB test specimen was attached. AE amplitude was estimated for CFRP-alumina and CFRP composite. And the fracture toughness was evaluated by the stress intensity factor and energy release rate. The results showed that an unstable crack was propagated rapidly in CFRP composite specimen along with the interface, but crack propagation in CFRP-alumina specimen was relatively stable. From results, we show that aluminium oxide powder spreaded uniformly in the interface of the CFRP laminate carried out the role for preventing the sudden crack growth.

  • For better understand of the soil respiration characteristic in ecosystem, it is necessary to accurately determine the daily, monthly and seasonal $CO_2$ flux related to various environmental factors. In general, soil respiration is being measured on a sunny day. But soil respiration is known to be affected by soil temperature and soil moisture content. In case of forestry, changes in soil moisture content are entirely dependent on rainfall. If we calculated the monthly soil respiration measured based on sunny days data only, it could be a factor that loses credibility soil respiration. On this study, we measured soil respiration on Pinus koraiensis plantation at Mt. Taehwa of Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do on sunny and rainy days in 2012, using Automatic Open-Closed Chamber system (AOCC) and portable $CO_2$ analyzer (GMP343). Then we computed the regression equations using sunny days data, precipitation less than 10 mm data, and precipitation over 10 mm data. At first, there were no significant differences in observed data and computed data. But less than 10 mm precipitation, computed data was 26.5% lower than observed data. Precipitation over 10 mm, on the other hand, the former was 29.3% higher than the latter. In each case, it showed significant differences between observed and computed data (p<0.05). So if we computed regression equation using soil respiration measured sunny days only, about 30% of annual soil respiration could be overestimated. Through further study, we suggest the subdivision and computation of regression equation on the basis of the rainfall intensity.

  • The phosphorescence powder, $SrA1_2O_4:Eu^{2+}$, synthesized by a Polymerized Complex Method(PCM), has been compared with that by a Solid-State Reaction(SSR), and their luminescence characteristics have been studied. The PCM powders were synthesized at $900^{\circ}C$ and the SSR powders at $1200^{\circ}C$. The size of PCM powders was about $0.1{\mu}m$ and one tenth of that of the SSR powders, which was due to the lower synthesized temperature. On the other hand, residual carbon in the PCM powders decreased with an increase in the crystallinity of host lattice, which was responsible for the non-white color of the powders. Both powders showed the maximum luminescence peaks around 520nm in the wave length at room temperature. However, the peak position for the PCM powders was shifted to a slightly lower wavelength and the value of half-width of the peak was broad comparing to that of the SSR powders, and the peak intensity decreased significantly. Such a change in the luminescence characteristics was due to the large difference in size for two types of powders and partly the residual carbon in the PCM powders.
