Graphite and carbonaceous materials showed an excellent capability as a negative electrode in Li-ion batteries because Li-ion can be intercalated and de-intercalated reversibly within most carbonaceous materials of layered structure. Also, the electrochemical potential of Li-intercalated carbon anode is almost identical with that of Li metal. In the present study, mesocarbon microbeads(MCMB) were used as anode electrode and its properties of charge/discharge and interfacial reaction with electrolyte were studied by Potentiostat/Galvanostat test, FT-IR analysis, XRD and SEM. The passivation film of solid-state was formed as the interface between electrode and electrolyte as the cell reaction began and, once formed, became thicker with repeated charge/discharge process. Also, the relationship between the passivation film formed at the electrode interface and storage capacity was discussed.

Lithium-ion battery (LIB) usually used for valuable electronic devices are extended to applications. High stability negative electrode materials for LIB were investigated using electrodeposition of nanoparticles (NPs) on the nanostructured carbon. NPs with about 70 nm diameters were evenly prepared on the graphitic carbon materials using electrodeposition process at room temperature. It was observed that the NPs were homogeneously embedded into not only external surface but bottom part of the graphitic carbon network. The graphitic carbon material covered with NPs enables facile electron transport owing to the network structure and improves structural collapse during cycling. This facile room temperature process is expected to be applicable to other anode materials such as Sn and Al for the anode of LIB.
To improve the safety and electrode characteristics of lithium metal anode, physically coated electrodes on lithium metal surface by three kinds of carbon are prepared and their charge-discharge performances are investigated by adopting the C-Li electrodes as the anode of rechargeable lithium batteries. The lithium anode coated by the carbon powder with smaller particle size and higher surface area, which has higher packing density and lower surface roughness, shows better performance in charge-discharge characteristics. The carbon coating on lithium surface can be more effective in small-sized cells.

In this study, required properties and optimized procedure conditions for the pitch based soft carbon anode of lithium ion battery was investigated for improving the initial efficiency and rate performance. Each petroleum residue was thermally treated at 360, 370, and $410^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours to synthesis a pitch and the corresponding pitch shows the softening point of 86, 98, and $152^{\circ}C$, respectively. The elemental analysis and thermal characteristics of the pitch were investigated by EA analysis and TGA. It was noted that the low H/C and improved thermal stability were obtained with the high softening point. The obtained pitch was carbonized at $1,200^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour to produce a soft carbon based anode. As a result of investigating the crystal structure by XRD analysis, it was found that the crystallinity of soft carbon increased with increasing the softening point. It was considered that relatively higher boiling components and decreases in the evaporation component resulted the components participation for cyclization during the heat treatment process. The soft carbon based anode with an improved crystallinity shows the enhanced initial efficiency and rate performance. The mechanism of both improvements was also discusssed based on the developed crystal structure of soft carbon based anode materials.

In this study, effects of the physical and chemical properties of low temperature heated carbon on electrochemical behavior as a secondary battery anode material were investigated. A heat treatment at 600 ℃ was performed for coking of petroleum based pitch, and the manufactured coke was heat treated with different heat temperatures at 700~1,500 ℃ to prepare low temperature heated anode materials. The physical and chemical properties of carbon anode materials were studied through nitrogen adsorption and desorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, elemental analysis. Also the anode properties of low temperature heated carbon were considered through electrochemical properties such as capacity, initial Coulomb efficiency (ICE), rate capability, and cycle performance. The crystal structure of low temperature (≤ 1500 ℃) heated carbon was improved by increasing the crystal size and true density, while the specific surface area decreased. Electrochemical properties of the anode material were changed with respect to the physical and chemical properties of low temperature heated carbon. The capacity and cycle performance were most affected by H/C atomic ratio. Also, the ICE was influenced by the specific surface area, whereas the rate performance was most affected by true density.

This study offers a novel method for improving the physical contact between the anode and fuel in a direct carbon fuel cell (DCFC): a direct generation of carbon in a porous Ni anode through the thermal decomposition of gaseous hydrocarbons. Three kinds of alkane hydrocarbons with different carbon numbers (CH4, C2H6, and C3H8) are tested. From electron microscope observations of the carbon particles generated from each hydrocarbon, we confirm that more carbon spheres (CS), carbon nanotubes (CNT), and carbon nanofibers (CNF) were identified with increasing carbon number. Raman scattering results revealed that the carbon samples became less crystalline and more flexible with increasing carbon number. DCFC performance was measured at $700^{\circ}C$ with the anode fueled by the same mass of each carbon sample. One-dimensional carbon fuels of CNT and CNF more actively produced and had power densities 148 and 210 times higher than that of the CS, respectively. This difference is partly attributed to the findings that the less-crystalline CNT and CNF have much lower charge transfer resistances than the CS.
The various expanded graphites (EGs) was prepared and applied as anode material for high power Li-ion secondary battery (LIB). By changing the processing conditions of EG, a series of EG with different structure were produced, showing the changed electrochemical properties. The charge-discharge test showed that the initial reversible capacity of EG anodes prepared at the suitable conditions was over 400 mAh/g and the charge capacity at 5 C-rate was 83.2 mAh/g. These values demonstrated the much improved electrochemical properties as compared with those for the graphite anode of 360 mAh/g and 19.4 mAh/g, respectively, showing the possibility of EG anode materials for high power LIB.

We prepared flexible transparent conducting electrodes by spray coating of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) networks on PET substrate and have demonstrated their use as transparent anodes for flexible organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). The flexible CNT electrode produced by spray coating method shows relatively low sheet resistance ($150{\sim}220{\Omega}/sq.$) and high transmittance of ~60% even though it was prepared at room temperature. In addition, CNT electrode/PET sample exhibits little resistance change during 2000 bending cycles, demonstrated good mechanical robustness. Using transparent CNT electrode, it is readily possible to achieve performances comparable to commercial ITO-based OLEDs. This indicates that flexible CNT electrode is alternative anode materials for conventional ITO anode in flexible OLEDs.

This paper presents a carbon nanotube (CNT) triode-structure field emitter as an ion source in a micro time-of-flight mass spectrometer(TOF-MS). In the ion source by field emission, the electrons emitted from cathodes under an electric field accelerated to the anode and ionize gas molecules by impact before arriving the anode. The generated positive ions are to be accelerated to the ion collector. Whereas most of ions are drawn to the cathodes in diode field emitters, a grid in the triode field emitter prevents the ions from being drawn to the cathodes. The triode field emitter is fabricated by micromachining. The cathode is composed of six CNT cylinders. The total size of the fabricated device is $8.0{\times}7.3{\times}1.9mm^3$. The anode and the grid current of the fabricated CNT field emitter were measured for various anode and grid voltages. When the anode and the grid voltages are 1000 V and 990 V, respectively, the emission current passing through the ionization region is 8.6 ${\mu}A$, which is a sufficient emission current for ionization and mass spectrometry.
Two different types of graphite, such as flake graphite (FG) and spherical graphite (SG), were used as anode materials for a lithium-ion secondary battery in order to investigate their electrochemical performance. The FG particles were prepared by pulverizing natural graphite with a planetary mill. The SG particles were treated by immersing them in acid solutions or mixing them with various carbon additives. With a longer milling time, the particle size of the FG decreased. Since smaller particles allow more exposure of the edge planes toward the electrolyte, it could be possible for the FG anodes with longer milling time to deliver high reversible capacity; however, their initial efficiency was found to have decreased. The initial efficiency of SG anodes with acid treatments was about 90%, showing an over 20% higher value than that of FG anodes. With acid treatment, the discharge rate capability and the initial efficiency improved slightly. The electrochemical properties of the SG anodes improved slightly with carbon additives such as acetylene black (AB), Super P, Ketjen black, and carbon nanotubes. Furthermore, the cyclability was much improved due to the effect of the conductive bridge made by carbon additives such as AB and Super P.
