  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the change of comprehension degree about learning satisfaction and capstone class by applying the subject which draws idea for team project task in college to creative capstone design program. The Capstone Design Program is designed to train fieldworkers with creative problem solving skills and is widely applied as a problem-solving course in team-based projects. In this paper, based on the case study of the 'fusion capstone design' operated in the first semester of 2015 ~ 2017, the capstone design course was established in the course of designing ideas for problem solving. The results of this study are as follows: First, the questionnaire about capstone design instruction process, instruction method, and learning achievement satisfaction were analyzed. As a result, understanding of capstone design was found to be higher than that of class before class, and satisfaction of performance course, method of teaching performance and learning outcome were obtained.

  • Capstone design is a subject taught in a setting where students gather in a team, decide on their own selected topic, and collaborate with one another to perform a project. A fair assessment is very important in a team project-based capstone design course for students. Many instructors agree that harmonizing creative evaluation and outcome assessment is hard in capstone design class. In also, it is not easy to assess students' individual efforts and achievements fairly in accordance with team-based assessment practices. To resolve this issue in this paper, we have surveyed various engineering design education methodologies, and have modelled existing evaluating elements into a modified creative process and outcome assessment framework for team project assessment. In particular, we focused on a method of fairly assigning credits by combining team based and individual-level assessments. Analyzing students' achievement and grade evaluation and verifying the validity of the proposed method was performed.

  • The goal of this study was to explore topic defining patterns of students in interdisciplinary Capstone Design Class. Thematic analysis methodology was used to examine 85 Korean college students' lived experience of project topic generation which is for interdisciplinary capstone design class and Individual open-ended survey for constituted the data sources. Findings show four contexts of student's topic defining patterns using thematic analysis including (a) one leader's directed problem representation, (b) team common decision making after brainstorming, (c) empathy with professor proposed issue, (d) problems offered to students by corporate or research competitions. Based on research result, I could suggest instructional strategies of Capstone Design Class of teacher for helping their students' topic defining. It was necessary to minimize the opinions of the instructors at the beginning of class and minimize the number of team members. And also it provided a lot of opportunities to collaborate with companies in the topic selection process, it will help to develop the students' ability to determine the valuable topic in project.

  • This paper deals with the process and requirements of a capstone design project performed by undergraduate students. We discuss about the preliminary study for the capstone design, the derivation of a subject, the level descriptor of the subject, and the system requirements. And then, we summarize the results of the capstone design project entitled as Microsoft Azure based IoT (Internet of Things) system which is performed by 4 undergraduate students during 10 months. This system is composed of a Zigbee sensor network, the TCP/IP Internet, an IoT server, and a smartphone application program, with which we can gather the sensor data and control actuators at the far away area.

  • This paper discusses the creative capstone design education in Kongju National University and introduce a new operational capstone design education method. The result products are evaluated by self-evaluation and performance assessment that is based on the operational method and procedure of the project. The capstone design teams are comprised of 2~3 students with a individual major accomplishments. All teams are satisfied the criteria of evaluation. And their's self-satisfaction and questionaries are totally 3.88~4.44 point out of 5. Compared with the conduct of previous capstone design project that was not the industry affiliate, it provides students with industrial experience in design and development of industrial solution. And industrial partner must provide funds for student team to design, fabrication and test in next time.

  • Capstone design course has been opened in order to improve students' practical project in undergraduate courses. This paper presents the efficient operation method for capstone design course. The proposed capstone design is operated such as outside outsourcing institute of industry, that is, the industry suggests the topics and fourth grade students work on this project during this year, and third grade students take over same project and proceed to improve in next year, so it is the continuous operating. Based on this system, industry can get the desired project outputs, and the university can give practical team project experience for students, so a mutual benefit between the industry and university can be possible. The proposed operating system is actually applied to the department of computer engineering, the questionnaire surveys are performed to participated students and corporate mentors, and then the operating results of the proposed system are analyzed.

  • This paper deals with a 'Designeer' education program that has a specific objective of educating design to undergraduate students in mechanical engineering with the aim of enhancing their ability of collaboration with designers when they are going to work in the field after graduation. The entire curriculum of the Designeer education program is introduced first, the end of which two-semester Capstone Design Courses for senior students is offered to let them practice all the knowledge and skills in a project-based learning environment. Learning specific matters such as sketching & visual thinking, prototyping and user experience design is one thing and practicing those knowledge and skills into a Capstone Design project is another. At this point, design thinking process needs to be in place to give students a foresight of one-year journey and to ensure that they will produce a desirable, feasible and viable product at the end of the year when they define the right problem at the beginning. Their frustrations and discoveries while applying design thinking throughout the year is explained by taking an example of a Robot Vacuum Cleaner design project. Finally, we provide real examples of effective methods to practice divergent and convergent phases.

The course focuses on creative thinking and cooperative mind to students by learning engineering design skills, realizing their idea through design project and recognizing practicality of their systems. To improve creative thinking of students, intellectual property (IP) education is very helpful. If engineering students take training program in IP, it will be very beneficial for CEOs to manage intellectual capital in many industries and to ensure competition power in their business. This study suggested that students take interest in connecting their ideas with inventions through invention education reinforcing an invention and a patent exercise. It is expected that this study may help to develop new curriculum of capstone design project including IP education in many universities.

  • To enhance the university-industry collaboration, a novel program named as Internship & Capstone Design Integrated program (ICIP) is developed by Dongguk University. Senior students must take one Capstone design class for graduation. By participating in summer Internship and one-year Capstone Design work, practical problems given by businesses are solved. The ICIP is a Project and Internship-based course. By participating in summer internship and one-year Capstone Design work, practical problems given by businesses are solved. The internship course requires students to work in teams under mentors who work in the partner company proposed project themes. Students apply their academic experiences in constructing real projects at work under the supervision of their site mentors and academic advisor. In this regard, this study attempts to present a case study on the assessment of program outcomes using the Internship.
