  • In this study poly(carbazole) films deposited on stainless steel have been investigated as electrode material for supercapacitor applications. Poly(carbazole) films were electrodeposited using cyclic voltammetry in presence of lithium, sodium and tetrabutylammonium perchlorate salts. Poly(carbazole) films doped with perchlorate anions having different counter cations were characterized by SEM, ATR-FTIR and solid state conductivity measurements. Capacitive behaviours of PCz coated steel electrodes were tested by cyclic voltammetry, charge-discharge analysis and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. It was found that counter cation of the dopant is significantly effective on the capacitive performance on the obtained PCz films and the PCz film synthesized from lithium perchlorate has the better capacitive performance than the poly(carbazole)s synthesized from sodium perchlorate and tetrabutylammonium perchlorate salts.

  • The principal obstacle to selection of a laser processing method in production is its relatively high equipment cost and the natural unwillingness of production supervision to try something new until it is thoroughly proven. The major objective of this work is focused on the combined features of gas tungsten arc and a low-power cold laser beam. In this work, the laser beam from a 7 watts carbon monoxide laser was combined with electrical discharges from a short-pulsed capacitive discharge GTA welding power supply. When the low power CO laser beam passes through a special composition shielding gas, the CO molecules in the gas absorbs the radiation, and ionizes through a process blown as non-equilibrium, vibration-vibration pumping. The resulting laser-induced plasma(LIP) was positioned between various configurations of electrodes. The high-voltage impulse applied to the electrodes forced rapid electrical breakdown between the electrodes. Electrical discharges between tungsten electrodes and aluminum sheet specimens followed the ionized path provided by LIP. The result was well-focused melted spots.

  • In this paper, new address electrode having separated dual electrodes is suggested to reduce addressing time in ac PDP. It had been found that both the formative and jitter width of the suggested electrode are improved by $10{\sim}20$ % compared with the conventional one on IMID 04'. So we experiment other several kinds of the separated electrodes, and the change in discharge characteristics is analyzed by using a two-dimensional fluid simulation. The key feature of the suggested structure is that the distribution of Xe and Ne ion is controllable during the address periods without significant increases in the capacitive load of the address electrodes.

  • The surface of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was modified by fluorination and applied to conductive materials to improve the energy efficiency of a capacitive desalination (CDI) electrode. CNTs were fluorinated at room temperature with a mixed gas of fluorine and nitrogen, and activated carbon based CDI electrodes were then prepared by adding 0-0.5 wt% of untreated CNTs or fluorinated CNTs with respect to the activated carbon. Fluorinated CNTs showed improved dispersibility in the electrode and also slurry as compared to untreated CNTs, which was confirmed by the zeta potential and scanning electron microscopy. Fluorinated CNTs added electrodes showed higher desalination efficiency but lower energy consumption than those of using untreated CNTs added electrodes. This was attributed to the decrease in the resistance of CDI electrodes due to the improved dispersibility of CNTs by fluorination.

  • This paper describes the development of capacitive sensor for the diagnosis of liquid dielectrics, which is widely used as the electrical insulating oil of transformer, circuit breaker, cable and etc. To survey the dielectric properties of the virgin and aged electrical insulating oils, we utilized the highly precise measuring system, using the principle of cross capacitance. The measured properties were used to determine the design factors of the sensor. Then the factors were optimized with the help of computational analysis. To evaluate diagnosis by the sensor, we performed accelerated thermal aging test about electrical insulating oils. The condition of aged specimens were investigated by measurements of relative permittivity i.e. capacitance change by capacitive sensor. And to evaluate the hysteresis characteristics with the change of temperature, we constructed a testing system, which was composed with vacuum drying oven, oil chamber and measuring instruments, such as LCR meter, MUX and so forth. Through the results of this investigation, we confirmed the superior characteristics of the newly developed sensor.

  • The influence of discharge conditions, including the resistance of the sparking circuit, the shape of the electrodes and the width of the falling dust on the ignitability of lycopodium streams were investigated. Discharge characteristics and the ignition phenomena were also explored. When a 100 ㏀ resistor was connected in series with the sparking circuit, the lowest level of minimum ignition energy (MIE) was attained for lycopodium streams. Simultaneously, the area where flammable gas generated increased and the duration of flammable gas generation decreased. That is, the ignita-bility of lycopodium streams depended strongly on the discharge power and discharge duration. Electrodes with sharp tips gave smaller MIEs than those with round tips in a capacitive-inductive sparking circuit, while shape made no difference in a capacitive-resistive circuit. Streams that were too narrow required a considerable amount of energy for ignition.

  • In this study, for the improvement of flow pattern with the CDI module that had the larger electrodes, it was designed with the rectangular type which is gradually wider from the inlet. Based on this, both the flow pattern of feed solution and dead zone were observed and the internal pressure, streaming line and velocity vector distribution were analyzed through the computational flow dynamics and compared with the experimental results. For all flow rates of 10, 20, 30 mL/min, there were no dead zones and the flow patterns were maintained constant. Therefore, it may be possible that the larger electrodes are applied to the CDI process.

  • Desalination experiments were carried out with two types of cell configuration; a CDI cell constructed with carbon electrodes only and a membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI) cell having a cation-exchange membrane on the cathode surface. The salt removal rate and desalination efficiencies increased linearly with increasing the cell potential. Although the same carbon electrodes were used in the desalination experiments, the MCDI cell showed higher salt removal efficiency than that of the CDI cell. The amount of salt removal for the MCDI cell was enhanced by 33.1~135% compared to the CDI cell, depending on the applied cell potential in the range of 0.8~1.2 V. In addition, the current efficiency for the MCDI cell was about 80%, whereas the efficiency was under 40% for the CDI cell. The higher salt removal efficiency in the MCDI cell was attributed to the fact that ions were selectively transported between the electric double layer and the bulk solution in the MCDI cell configuration.

  • Sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) with a certain degree of sulfonation were synthesized by reacting PEEK and sulfuric acid at different reaction time. Then ion-selective composite carbon electrodes (ISCCE) were fabricated by coating the prepared SPEEK on the surface of carbon electrodes. The specific capacitance and resistance of the ISCCE were analyzed by electrical impedance spectroscopy. The ion exchange capacities (IEC) of the SPEEKs were measured in the range of 1.60~2.57 meq/g depending on the sulfonation time. The SPEEK more than 2.5 meq/g of IEC was considered unsuitable for fabricating the ISCCE because it was dissolved in water. The specific capacitance of the prepared ISCCE increased with increasing the IEC of coated SPEEKs and the capacitance was improved up to about 20% compared to that of uncoated carbon electrode. In addition, the electrical resistance of coating layer decreased significantly with increasing the IEC of coated SPEEKs. It is expected that the desalination efficiency of conventional capacitive deionization process can be improved by using the prepared ISCCE coated with SPEEK.
