  • The paper represents the design and fabrication of an electrostatic micro actuator with $p^+$,/TEX> Si cantilevers. The micro actuator consists of a plate suspended by four $p^+$,/TEX> silicon cantilevers and an electrode on a glass substrate. The $p^+$,/TEX> Si structure is fabricated by the boron diffusion process and the anisotropic wet etch process. The cantilevers of the micro actuator curl down because of the residual stress gradient in $p^+$,/TEX> silicon. When the electrostatic forec is applied to the $p^+$,/TEX> cantilevers, the vertical displacement of the plate can be achieved. The deflection of the cantilever due to the residual stress gradient and the vertical displacement by electrostatic force were calculated. The displacement of the plate was measured with a laser displacement meter for various input voltages and frequencies. The feasibility of the proposed micro actuator for the applications to optical pickup devices or optical communication devices was confirmed by the experiments.

  • Thermal bubbles find their diverse application areas in the MEMS (MicroElectroMechanial Systems) technology, including bubble jet printers, microactuators, micropumps, etc.. Especially, microactuators and micropumps, which use a microbubble growing by a controlled heat input, frequently involve mechanical and thermal interaction of the bubble with a solid structure, such as a cantilever beam and a membrane. Although the concept is experimentally verified that an internal pressure of the bubble can build up high enough to deflect a thin solid plate or a beam, the physics of the entire process have not yet been thoroughly explored. This work reports the experimental study of the growth of a thermal bubble while deflecting a thin cantilever beam. A physical model is presented to predict the elastic response of the cantilever beam based on the experimental measurements. The scaling law constructed through this work can provide a design guide for micro- and nano-systems that employ a thermal bubble for their actuation/pumping mechanism.

  • Linearized equations of motion for the vibration analysis of rotating cantilever plates with arbitrary orientation angle are derived in the present work. Two in-plane stretch variables are introduced to be approximated. The use of the two in-plane stretch variables enables one to derive the equations of motion which include proper motion-induced stiffness variation terms. The equations of motion are transformed into dimensionless forms in which dimensionless parameters are identified. The effects of the dimensionless parameters on the modal characteristics of rotating cantilever plates are investigated through numerical study. The natural frequency loci veering along with the associated mode shape variations, which occur while the rotating speed increases, are also presented and discussed.

  • A modelling method for the vibration analysis of rotating cantilever plates with a concentrated mass is presented. The equations of motion for the rotating plates with a concentrated mass located in an arbitrary position are derived. For the modelling of the concentrated mass, a mass density Dirac delta function is used. The effects of concentrated mass and its location, angular speed, and hub radius of the rotating plate on the natural frequencies are studied. Particularly, mode shape variations due to some parameter variations are investigated.

  • This paper presents an efficient numerical method for the computation of eigenpair derivatives for a real symmetric eigenvalue problem with distinct and multiple eigenvalues. The method has a very simple algorithm and gives an exact solution. Furthermore, it saves computer sotrage and CPU time. The algorithm preserves not only the symmetricity but also the band width of the matrices, allowing efficient computer storage and solution techniques. Results from the proposed method for calculating the eigenpair derivatives are compared with those from Rudisill and Chu's method and Nelson's method which is known efficient one in the case of distinct natural frequencies. As an example to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method in the case of distinct eigenvalues, a cantilever plate is considered. The design parameter of the cantilever plate is its thickness. For the eigenvalue problem with multiple natural frequencies, the adjacent eigenvectors are used in the algebraic equation as side conditions, lying adjacent to the multiplicity of multiple natural frequency distinct eigenvalues, which appear when design parameter varies. A cantilever beam is used to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method in the case of multiple natural frequencies. Results form the proposed method for calculating the eigenpair derivatives are compared with those from Dailey's method(an amendation of Ojalvo's work) which finds the exact eigenvector derivatives. The design parameter of the cantilever beam is its height. Data is presented showing the amount of CPU time used to compute the first ten eigenpair derivatives by each method. It is important to note that the numerical stability of the proposed method is proved.

  • The piezoelectric transverse $d_{15}$ shear sensing mechanism is firstly assessed experimentally for a cantilever smart sandwich plate made of a piezoceramic axially poled patched core and glass fiber reinforced polymer composite faces. Different electrical connections are tested for the assessment of the sensor performance under a varying amplitude harmonic (at 24 Hz) force. Also, the dynamic response of the smart sandwich composite structure is monitored using different acquisition devices. The obtained experimentally sensed voltages are compared to those resulting from the benchmark three-dimensional piezoelectric coupled finite element simulations using a commercial code where realistic features, like equipotential conditions on the patches' electrodes and mechanical updating of the clamp, are considered. Numerically, it is found that the stiffness of the clamp, which is much softer than the ideal one, has an enormous influence on the sensed voltage of its adjacent patch; therefore, sensing with the patch on the free side would be more advantageous for a cantilever configuration. Apart from confirming the latter result, the plate benchmark experimental assessment showed that the parallel connection of its two oppositely poled patches has a moderate performance but better than the clamp side patch acting as an individual sensor.

  • In this paper, the problem of interfacial stresses in steel cantilever beams strengthened with bonded composite laminates is analyzed using linear elastic theory. The analysis is based on the deformation compatibility approach, where both the shear and normal stresses are assumed to be invariant across the adhesive layer thickness. The original study in this paper carried out an analytical solution to estimate shear and peel-off stresses, as, interfacial stress analysis concentration under the uniformly distributed load and shear lag deformation. The theoretical prediction is compared with authors solutions from numerous researches. This phenomenon of deformation of the members, which gives probably approach on the study of interface of the reinforced structures, is called "shear lag effect". The resolution in this paper shows that the shear stress and the normal stress are significant and, are concentrated at the end of the composite plate of reinforcement, called "edge effect". A parametric study is carried out to show the effects of the variables of design and the physical properties of materials. This research is helpful for the understanding on mechanical behaviour of the interface and design of such structures.

  • A modeling method for the vibration analysis of rotating composite cantilever plates is presented in this paper. The coupling effects between inplane motions and the bending motion are considered and explicit mass and stiffness matrices are derived for the modal analysis. Numerical results are obtained and some of them are compared to those of a commercial program to confirm the accuracy of the present method. Numerical results show that the coupling effects become important only when laminates are stacked up unsymmetrically. Incidentally, natural frequencies loci veering, loci crossing, and associated mode shape variations are observed.

  • This paper presents a modeling method for the vibration analysis of translationally accelerated cantilever plates. An accurate dynamic modeling method, which was introduced in the previous study, is employed to obtain the equations of motion for the vibration analysis. Dimensionless parameters are identified to generalize the conclusions from numerical results. The effects of the dimensionless parameters on the natural frequencies and mode shapes are investigated. Particularly, the magnitude of critical acceleration which causes the dynamic buckling of the structure is calculated. Incidentally, the natural frequency loci veering phenomena are observed and discussed.
