  • We predict the unknown cannon tube erosion rate by using observed values of the standard cannon, 155mm Howitzer Ml85. We know the standard cannon's ten erosion observation values each 400 rounds. An approximate formula fitting the erosion values of the standard cannon has been derived. Numerical simulation applying this formula to the Rauf Imam's erosion equations is presented.

  • We predict the erosion rate of unknown cannon tubes by substituting measured values of the standard cannon, 155㎜ Howitzer M185 and ballistic data for the erosion equation. We know ten measured erosion values of the standard cannon at every 400 rounds. An approximate formula is derived to interpolate six values up to 2,000 rounds. Numerical example is presented and its results are analyzed. The new erosion equation is also suggested. This equation produces more accurate cannon tube erosion rate than the Rauf Imam's empirical approaches. Computer simulations are presented.

  • Various methods that utilize erosion rate measurement of standard cannon, 155mm Howitzer M185, as reference, are being used to calculate erosion rate of an interested unknown cannon tubes. We know ten measured erosion values of the standard cannon from 391 rounds to 4.000. An approximate function fitting these value s is derived. The new erosion equation is also suggested and computer simulations arc presented.

  • Most water cannon machines use compressed gas to accelerate a piston which extrudes water through a cumulation nozzle. Very high jet stagnation-pressures can be achieved by using a specially-shaped nozzle which is initially filled with air or vacuum. The objective of this study was to establish the basic technology of water cannon using exponential type nozzle. An experimental water cannon including high pressure components such as exponential nozzle and 300atm air resrvior were designed and tested. Parameters that influence the performance of the system and jet characteristics were examined.

  • In this paper, we have proposed a capability of applying Global Positioning System(GPS) to cannon laying. High precision GPS positioning can be used for measuring precise positions and angles. Therefore, we have tested on applying GPS positioning technique to measurement of positions and angles, which related to cannon laying. First of all, we have determined a GPS reference position using various positioning methods. Then we have carried out several tests that are process of taking corner angles between neighboring two vectors. Each vector can be calculated by post/real time positioning of two GPS antennas placed on the both ends of the howitzer. The Comer Angles from Post processing(CAP) are compared with the other Corner Angles from Real time positioning(CAR). As the results, we have an agreement between CAP and CAR within 0.25 mil average, 0.29 mil standard deviation. Finally, we have discussed about the capabilities and problems in artillery arrangement using GPS.

  • The characteristics and behavior of bullets are important because they are directly related to the firearm performance. However, research related to bullets have been small. In this paper, scientific analysis was conducted to find out the materials and manufacturing process of metal bullets during the Joseon Dynasty, owned by Korea Army Museum, and the types of firearms available were classified and organized according to the bullet diameter. As a result, bullets were classified into iron bullets, lead bullets, and lead-coated iron bullets. Most of the iron bullets and lead bullets were made from casting. Some iron bullets were made from forging. And the lead-coated iron bullet was made by pouring molten lead after putting the iron bullet into the mold. Finally, the bullets could be used for Hand Cannon, Matchlock Musket, Frankish Cannon, Hyeon-ja Cannon, Dae-Wiwon Cannon, Small Cannon, and Hong-Yi Cannon.

  • This paper describes an analysis of an architecture and control system of a firefighting cannon manipulator (FCM) composed of two joint axes and one water-shooting actuator. Because the orienting FCM motion is disturbed by the reaction force from water shooting, the water shooting force has been modeled for robust control. The dynamics model of the manipulator has been set up including the external force of water-shooting reaction on the manipulator. A PD Controller and Sliding Mode Controller have been designed and their performance been tested through simulation to track a desired trajectory under the disturbance of a water-shooting reaction. The simulation shows that the performance of the Sliding Mode Controller is better than that of the PD controller.

  • The three-dimensional hydrodynamic numerical model of the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea has been further utilised to provide S$\sub$2/,K$\sub$1/,O$\sub$1/ tidal currents distribution in addition to previously provided M$\sub$2/ tidal current distribution(Choi, 1984), especially the vertical variation of horizontal current in the region. Model results have been compared with current meter data acquired from recent China-USA Marine Sedimentation Dyamics Programme (Larsen and Cannon, 1983). Results were also used to provide maps of the S$\sub$2/,K$\sub$1/,O$\sub$1/ tidal current constants and tidal ellipses at three depths to complement previous M$\sub$2/ tidal current information.
