  • This paper reviews the development status of magnetic refrigeration system for hydrogen liquefaction. There is no doubt that hydrogen is one of most important energy sources in the near future. In particular, liquid hydrogen can be utilized for infrastructure construction consisting of storage and transportation. Liquid hydrogen is in cryogenic temperatures and therefore high efficient liquefaction method must be studied. Magnetic refrigeration which uses the magneto-caloric effect has potential to realize not only the higher liquefaction efficiency > 50 %, but also to be environmentally friendly and cost effective. Our hydrogen magnetic refrigeration system consists of Carnot cycle for liquefaction stage and AMR (active magnetic regenerator) cycle for precooling stages. For the Carnot cycle, we develop the high efficient system > 80 % liquefaction efficiency by using the heat pipe. For the AMR cycle, we studied two kinds of displacer systems, which transferred the working fluid. We confirmed the AMR effect with the cooling temperature span of 12 K for 1.8 T of the magnetic field and 6 second of the cycle. By using the simulation, we estimate the total efficiency of the hydrogen liquefaction plant for 10 kg/day. A FOM of 0.47 is obtained in the magnetic refrigeration system operation temperature between 20 K and 77 K including LN2 work input.

  • As a part of the government renewable energy policy, KOWEPO is constructing 300MW IGCC plant in Taean. IGCC plant consists of gasification block, air separation unit and power block, which performance test is separately conducted. Overall performance test for IGCC plant is peformed to comply with ASME PTC 46. Major factors affected on the overall efficiency for IGCC plant are external conditions, each block performance(gasification, ASU, power block), water/steam integration and air integration. Performance parameters of IGCC plant are cold gas efficiency, oxygen consumption, sensible heat recovery of syngas cooler for gasification block and purity of oxygen, flow amount of oxygen and nitrogen, power consumption for air separation unit and steam/water integration among the each block. The gas turbine capacity applied to the IGCC plant is 20 percent higher than NGCC gas turbine due to the low caloric heating value of syngas, therefor it is possible to utilize air integration between gas turbine and air separation unit to improve overall efficiency of the IGCC plant and there is a little impact on the ambient condition. It is very important to optimize the air integration design with consideration to the optimized integration ratio and the reliable operation. Optimized steam/water integration between power block and gasification block can improve overall efficiency of IGCC plant where the optimized heat recovery from gasification block should be considered. Finally, It is possibile to achieve the target efficiency above 42 percent(HHV, Net) for 300MW Taean IGCC plant by optimized design and integration.

  • In this paper, the research was applied the mixture gas of Propane-DME (dimethyl ether) for being commercialization to residential gas ranges. In order to examine a correspondence between Korean Standard and thermal efficiency characteristics at each burner, experiments were performed with 100% Propane and the mixture gas of 80% Propane-20% DME. The experimental results were shown that the higher a mixture ratio of DME was used, the lower a thermal efficiency was gained. Those were due to low caloric value of DME. With 80% Propane-20% DME mixture gas, one of residential gas ranges was not satisfied the condition for the thermal efficiency value, 40%, Korean Standard. Consequently, the research needs about the standard for being commercialization to the mixture gas of Propane-DME.

  • In order to cope with the problems that may occur when the natural gas used in Korea becomes low in calories, the problems that may have to the domestic industrial gas equipment must be identified in advance, and based on this, countermeasures for efficient use of energy must be preceded. In this study, in order to solve the problem of deterioration of engine output performance and efficiency due to the introduction of low calorific gas when using a lean-burning natural gas engine that complies with the EURO-6 regulation, specific control plans and results based on the experiment are intended to be presented. In order to identify the improvement effect by the control variable represented by the ignition timing under the full load condition at the engine speed of 1,400 rpm and 550 Nm, 2,100 rpm, which is the engine speed at the rated operation condition, the thermal efficiency and exhaust gas characteristics were identified and optimized by changing the ignition timing for each gas fuel. In the case of pure methane, which shows the lowest value based on the torque under the full load condition, if the ignition timing is advanced by about 2 CAD from the reference ignition timing, the torque can be compensated without a large increase in NOx emission.

  • A feeding experiment was conducted to determine the use of distillers dried grain (DDG) as a partial replacement for fish meal in the diet for juvenile rockfish, Sebastes schlegeli. Four iso-nitrogenous (50% crude protein) and iso-caloric (4.3 kcal/g) diets (designated as DDG0, DDG7, DDG14, and DDG21) were formulated to contain 0, 7, 14, and 21% DDG. Triplicate groups of juvenile rockfish (initial body weight, $10.2{\pm}0.2g$) were fed one of the experimental diets to visual satiety twice a day (09:00 and 17:00) for 8 weeks. At the end of the feeding trial, survival of rockfish was above 97% and not affected by dietary DDG levels (P>0.05). Weight gain, feed efficiency and daily feed intake of juvenile rockfish were significantly decreased with increase of dietary DDG levels (P<0.05). Condition factor, hepatosomatic index and visceralsomatic index of juvenile rockfish were not significantly affected by dietary DDG levels (P>0.05). No significant differences were observed in the contents of moisture, crude protein, crude lipid and ash of the whole body and dorsal muscle in juvenile rockfish fed the experimental diets (P>0.05). Therefore dietary inclusion of DDG as a replacement for fish meal could depress the growth of juvenile rockfish.

  • Properties of wood charcoal made from the domestic wood species at $300-900^{\circ}C$ have investigated to understand the correlation between carbonization temperature and chemical and physical characteristics of wood charcoal. In terms of charcoal yield at particular carbonization temperatures, it was drastically decreased until the temperature reaches up to $600^{\circ}C$ and the decrease ratio of yield was reduced at higher temperatures. As the carbonization temperature increased, pH of the wood charcoal increased so that it became basic at last. The wood charcoal prepared at $600{\sim}700^{\circ}C$ showed the highest caloric value and those of wood charcoals made at higher temperature became plateau at a little lower level than the peak. The caloric value of Japanese larch charcoal was a bit higher than that of Red oak charcoal. The carbon content in the wood charcoal was increased as the carbonization temperature increased, whereas the hydrogen content was decreased. Specific surface area of the wood charcoal became larger with increase in temperature up to $600^{\circ}C$ but it was decreased or reduced in the increasing ratio after, and then it rose again at higher temperature than $800^{\circ}C$. Absorption capacity of the wood charcoal against iodine and gaseous acetic acid became greater as the carbonization temperature increased. Japanese larch charcoal presented higher absorption capacity than Red oak charcoal. As the above results, it is revealed that carbonization temperature affects the chemical and physical properties of wood charcoal. Therefore, to use wood charcoal with maximum effect it should be prepared at optimum temperature for proper use.

  • There are many types of walking exercise. We have choice the way according to the walking exercise purpose. Nordic walking(NW) is one of walking types with nordic poles. Also, power walking(PW) has motion of large swing the arm in walking, and dumbbell walking(DW) way is walking with 3-pound dumbbell. This study compared the physiological response(heart rate, energy expenditure) of general walking(GW) to another types(nordic, power, and 3-pound hand weights walking way). Seven apparently male health volunteers between the ages 19 and 24 years participated. Each complete a treadmill test. The tests were assigned randomly, as submaximal walking trials on separate days. Each walking trial was conducted on a level treadmill, for 40 minutes(3-5mile/hour 5min warm-up, 6mile/hour speed for 15min walking and 7mile/hour speed for 15min Jogging exercise, and 5-3mile/hour cool down 5min), at an same pace. Heart rate in beats per minute(bpm), and energy expenditure in kcal per minute(kcal/min) were recorded each minute. Results between trials were compared using repeated measures analysis of variance and Tukey's post hoc tests. In slow walking, it was found that walking with 3-pound hand weight way resulted in and average of ($127.8{\pm}8.27bpm$) the highest score HR, Caloric expenditure($85.4{\pm}14.51kcal/min$), responses compared to regular walking way($117.4{\pm}7.27bpm$ and $70.4{\pm}10.99kcal/min$). Nordic walking way($121.4{\pm}11.74bpm$, and $77.0{\pm}16.83kcal/min$) is second, power walking way($118.5{\pm}9.98bpm$, and $68.7{\pm}20.62kcal/min$) is next. In fast walking, it was found that walking way with 3-pound hand weight resulted in and average of ($160.1{\pm}8.72bpm$) the highest score HR, caloric expenditure($126.1{\pm}13.86kcal/min$), responses compared to regular walking way($148.4{\pm}11.94bpm$, and $109.0{\pm}4.70kcal/min$). Nordic walking way($156.7{\pm}10.82bpm$, and $113.5{\pm}14.51kcal/min$) is second, power walking way($149.7{\pm}12.56bpm$, and $109.2{\pm}17.64kcal/min$) is next. Thus, it is the unavoidable conclusion that, comparing with general walking, 3-pound hand weight walking, nordic walking, and power walking methods have the advantage of high exercise intensity and energy expenditure to meet the purpose of performers without the problem. Furthermore, 3-pound hand weight walking ways were proved to be a useful aerobic exercise method as whole body that achieves high-energy efficiency. To this extent, 3-pound hand weight walking ways can be recommended as a continuous and regulative aerobic exercise for some people.

  • In the international natural gas market, natural gas has markedly low calories. The domestic calories standard of natural gas was changed and the performance and efficiency of many industrial machines using natural gas were affected because of low caloric natural gas. Therefore, in this study, a dual fuel engine fueled with natural gas and diesel was tested to examine the effects of the CNG substitution rate on the combustion characteristics, such as thermal efficiency, COVimep and heat release rate. The CNG substitution rate was defined as the ratio of CNG instead of diesel, which was calculated as the total energy. The conditions of the tested engine were fixed $1800rpm/500N{\cdot}m$. In addition, diesel fuel was injected at $16^{\circ}CA$ BTDC and the fuel pressure was fixed at 85 MPa; the lower heating value of CNG was $10,400kcal/Nm^3$. The results of the engine test showed that the amount of diesel fuel was changed according to the CNG substitution rate. Therefore, when the substitution rate was increased, the amount of diesel fuel was decreased, which affected the energy for ignition. In addition, the ignition delay duration was increased, which affected the thermal efficiency and torque. On the other hand, the COVimep was less than 5% and a stable combustion state of the engine was shown.

  • This study was carried out to derive the most optimal production process for the wood fuels(chip and pellet), by collecting cost data on each procedure through the life cycle assessment approach, and to compare between the profitability and efficiency, from the view points of producers and consumers, irrespectively. The costs accounted in this analysis were based on the opportunity cost. The results show that wood chips are cheaper than wood pellets in production costs. In respect to the process with the lowest production cost, while wood chips should be to crush collected residues into pieces on the spot for merchandizing, wood pellets need to be transported to manufactory for pelletizing. The study findings also include that the profits, which is estimated by subtracting expenses from gained sale revenue, were a bit higher for wood chips than wood pellets. Additionally, the price ratio of wood pellets to wood chips for getting the same caloric value appears to be 1.27. Despite of economic benefits of processing wood chips, there are several problems in practice. For producers, there is a possible increase in not only transportation cost for conveying crushers to the dispersed places, but storage cost due to the lack of the marketplaces in the immediate surroundings. For consumers, on the other hand, there are some challenging issues, such as bulky storage facility requirement, additional labor for fuel supplement, frequent ashes disposal, and decomposition in summer and freezing in winter caused by wood chips' own moisture.
