The seeds and callus induced from the root of Glycine max were used as test materials. When the seed was treated with the different concentrations of Pinus rigida extract, there was a more striking inhibition of seedling growth than of seed germination. The callus of the control group was in good condition, but when treated with 5% extract there was generalized browning and cell division was decreased in the upper part of the callus. There was no difference in the fresh and dry weights in 2% extract treatment but there was dramatic repression at concentrations higher than 5%. The band activity of peroxidase isozyme in treated callus was elevated, while that of esterase was inhibited.

In this study, we investigated the biological effects of Alcea rosea L. callus extract for the development of natural cosmetics ingredients. The antioxidant activities of A. rosea L. callus extract was measured through DPPH, ABTS and FRAP assay. As a result, A. rosea L. callus extract were found to have a strong antioxidant ability in a dose dependent manner. In addition, A. rosea L. callus effectively reduced the intracellular oxidative stress induced by AAPH at a concentration of 10 mg/mL. In a tyrosinase activity assay, we found that A. rosea L. callus extract reduced tyrosinase activity by 51% at 10 mg/mL. Based on these results, A. rosea L. callus extract is considered as a promising natural ingredients for cosmetics with antioxidant and whitening functions.

The effect of elicitor and precursor on salidroside production from Rhodiola sachalinensis A.Bor callus cultures was investigated. Callus cultures were treated with yeast extract, soft-ferrite ceramics powder, methyl jasmonate, ascorbic acid, jasmonic acid and $CuCl_2$/$CdCl_2$ as an elicitor. When callus cultures were treated with $0.2g/\ell$ of yeast extract, salidroside production from callus treated with yeast extract is 3.45 times higher than that of the controlled group. Among of them, callus cultures treated with yeast extract produced the highest salidroside. Callus cultures were treated with L-phenylalanine and L-tyrosine as a precursor for 4 days. The result of salidroside content analysis showed that all feeding of precursors not affected salidroside production from callus cultures. In case of L-tyrosine fed into callus cultures, both callus growth and salidroside production decreased at all concentrations.
The callus formation from inferior leaf of Aloe saponaria was induced in M & S medium supplemented with 10-30 ${\mu}M$ NAA (${\alpha}$-naphthalene acetic acid) and 3-7 ${\mu}M$ kinetin under incubation in the dark at $25^{\circ}C$ for 6 weeks. The hot water extract ($100^{\circ}C$, 24 hrs) from cultured callus was obtained and the components analysis for the extract were examined to determine the callus can synthesized the bioactive component such as Aloe polysaccharide. The freeze dried extract contained the sugar of 53.2%, protein of 7.3%, ash of 18.5% and water of 21% (w/w). Two fractions (Fr-I and Fr-II) were obtained by Sepharose CL-4B gel permeation chromatography and Fr-I, major fraction was further purified with dialysis. From sugar analysis by TLC and GC, the purified Fr-I fraction consisted of glucose (77.6%), galactose (17.7%), mannose (4.7%, w/w) and uronic acid (trace). The molecular weight of purified Fr-I fraction determined by GPC was about 110 kDa.

This study was conducted to identify the efficacy related to skin barrier functions such as anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, cornified envelope formation and the alleviation effect of keratinocyte damage caused by S. aureus using the callus extract, which was induced and extracted from the leaves of Gynostemma pentaphyllum in Ulleungdo Island. In order to confirm the anti-inflammatory effect of the G. pentaphyllum callus extract on the skin, the expression of inflammatory cytokines was investigated in primary epidermal keratinocytes (HEKa) activated with PAR-2 agonist, and the G. pentaphyllum callus extract showed IL-8, IL-25, and TSLP production inhibitory effect. β-Hexosaminidase assay using RBL-2H3 cells was performed to confirm the anti-allergic efficacy, and G. pentaphyllum callus extract showed the effect of inhibiting the release of β-hexosaminidase. In addition, G. pentaphyllum callus extract showed the cornified envelope formation effect in HaCaT cells, and through the co-culture experiment with HaCaT cells and S. aureus, it showed alleviation effect of keratinocyte damage caused by S. aureus. Therefore, G. pentaphyllum callus extract is considered to be a useful cosmetic material for improving skin barrier with anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic and alleviation effect of keratinocyte damage caused by S. aureus.
In order to investigate functional characterization of callus extracts of apple 'Hirosaki' for cosmetic materials, biological activities of its extracts including wrinkle improvement, hair growth, and anti-inflammatory effect were investigated. The callus extract showed similar activity with TGF-${\beta}$ used as positive control at 50 ${\mu}g/mL$ in the test of collagen synthesis, and increased 40% of proliferation of hair follicle dermal papilla cells. Especially, in case of anti-inflammatory effect, callus extract inhibited about 50% of COX-2 expression which was known as response for intermediating inflammation, and about 70% of eotaxin-1 production which was increased by atopy dermatitis.
In order to obtain functional materials from aloe callus, we cultured Aloe vera L. leaf on MS medium added 0.2 mg/L IAA, 0.3 mg/L kinetin and 100 mg/L grape or/and apple juice for 30 days. While a callus differentiation during callus culture did not show, the cultured leaves were uniquely released extracellular material into the agar plate. After cultivation for 18 days, the cultured leaf and agar were harvested for extraction a functional material. The materials extracted were measured on the amount of total phenols, flavonoids and polysaccharides and determined on the antioxidant and antimicrobial activity. In result, callus extracts of additive free (CT) and added apple juice (2T) had more amount of phenol compound ($659{\mu}g/mL$, $533{\mu}g/mL$) and flavonoid ($580{\mu}g/mL$, $501{\mu}g/mL$) than natural leaf (p: $525{\mu}g/mL$, f: $301{\mu}g/mL$). However, the extract of natural leaf had the better effect of lipid peroxidation and polysaccharide content than the culture extract. All samples extracted had same effect on the nitrite scavenging activity. On the other hand, only 2T extract showed excellent 72% nitric oxide scavenging activity. The agar extract was also confirmed to contain polyphenol compound and polysaccharide content that had antioxidant and antimicrobial activity partly.
Preliminary antibacterial assay data that the Tectona grandis callus extract showed more antibacterial activity against E. coli and B. subtilis than the leaf extract led the authors to isolate the following antibacterial compounds from the callus. A mixture (3) of $2{\alpha},3{\beta}-dihydroxy-olean-12-en-28-oic$ acid (3a) and $2{\alpha},3{\beta}-dihydroxy-urs-12-en-28-oic$ acid (3b) exhibited the most potent antibacterial activity against both bacteria. The other 3 compounds, in the decreasing order of the activity, were identified as $2{\alpha},3{\beta}-dihydroxy-urs-12-en-28-oic$ acid (2), betulinic acid (1), and $2{\alpha},3{\alpha}$,23-trihydroxy-urs-12-en-28-oic acid (4). The antibacterial compounds (2, 3a, 3b and 4) were not detected or occurring in small quantities in the intact tissue, while they were observed in the callus. Only the less active compound 1 was present more abundantly in intact tissues than the callus.

In this study, the anticancer activity of the water extract at $100^{\circ}C$ was compared to that of the callus extracts via a ultrasonification extraction process. All the extracts were utilized to evaluate cytotoxicity, antioxidant and immune activities. The callus extracted via ultrasonification extraction showed relatively low cytotoxicity on normal human cell lines, HEK293 and HEL299, showing 13.17% and 21.78%, respectively. The callus extract has 59.82% which was similar to 61.70% for water extracts. It was also found that callus extract yielded higher nitric oxide secretion form macrophage than other extracts. The growths of both human stomach adenocarcinoma (AGS) cell and human lung carcinoma (A549) were inhibited up to 70% by adding 1.0 mg/mL of the callus extracts with ultrasonification extraction. This inhibition ratio (70%) was almost close to that of water extract. Human hepatoma carcinoma (HEP3B) cell growth was most significantly inhibited up to 75% by adding 1.0 mg/mL of callus extracts, and its selectivity was highest compared to other extracts. It indicates that the callus extracts could selectively inhibit growth of digestive system-related cancer cells. It can be also concluded from the results of this study that the callus extracts associated with ultrasonification extraction process have the potential for anticancer activity.
Callus cultures of Convolvulus microphyllus Sieb. was induced on Murashige and Skoog's medium supplemented with 2,4-dichloro phenoxy acetic acid, 6-benzyl adenine, indole acetic acid and kinetin (1 ppm each). Methanolic extracts of whole plant, leaf, stem and leaf and stem calli were tested for anticonvulsant activity against standard drug phenytoin using maximal electroshock model on mice. It was observed that the animals treated with methanolic extracts of stem callus, leaf callus and whole plant (200 mg/kg, oral) showed significant protection against tonic convulsions induced by transcorneal electroshock. Anticonvulsant activity of methanolic extract of stem callus was comparable to that of standard drug phenytoin.
