An experiment was conducted to produce vaterite-type precipitated calcium carbonate from waste oyster shells in order to use them as recyclable resources. Calcined oyster shells containing calcium oxide as their main component were prepared at a temperature of 800℃ for 24 h. The oyster shells were dissolved in nitric acid or hydrochloric acid solution to make 0.1 M calcium nitrate or calcium chloride aqueous solution, and a carbonation reaction was performed using a 0.1 M sodium carbonate aqueous solution under various experimental conditions, which included varying the amount of aspatic acid additive, the amount of NH4OH added, the reaction time, the reaction temperature, the stirring speed, and the type of dissolved acid. The XRD, SEM, and size distributions were analyzed and the vaterite content was calculated. Spherical precipitated calcium carbonate with a vaterite content of 95.9% was synthesized by adding 0.1 mol aspatic acid/1 mol CaO and 2 cm3 of NH4OH, and reacting for 1 h at 25℃ while stirring at 600 rpm. The average particle diameter was found to be 12.11 ㎛. Calcium carbonate contatining high vaterite is used as high value added calcium carbonate for medical, food, inke additiver, etc.
Various bonegraft materials and the technique of guided tissue regeneration have been used to regenerate lost periodontal tissue. Calcium sulfate has been known as a bone graft material because of good biocompatibility, rapid resorption and effective osteoinduction. It has been known that calcium sulfate works as a binder to stabilize the defect when it is used with synthetic graft materials. The effects on the regeneration of pericxiontal tissue were studied in dogs after grafting 3-wall intrabony defects with calcium carbonate and calcium sulfate and covering with calcium sulfate barrier. The 3-wall intrabony defectstdmm width, 4mm depth, 4mm length) were created in anterior area and treated with flap operation alone(contol group), with porous resorbable calcium carbonate graft alonetexperirnental group 1), with calcium sulfate graft alonetexperimental group 2) and with composite graft of 80% calcium carbonate and 20% calcium sulfate with calcium sulfate barriertexperimental group 3). Healing responses were histologically observed after 8 weeks and the results were as follows: 1. The alveolar bone formation was $0.59{\pm}0.19mm$ in the control group, $1.80{\pm}0.25mm$ in experimental group 1, $1.61{\pm}0.21mm$ in experimental group 2 and $1.94{\pm}0.11mm$ in experimental group 3 with statistically significant differences between control group and all experimental groups(P<0.05). There were statistically significant differences between experimental group 1 and group 2 (P<0.05). 2. The new cementum formation was $0.48{\pm}0.19mm$ in the control group. $1.72{\pm}0.26mm$ in experimental group 1, $1.43{\pm}0.17mm$ in experimental group 2, $1.89{\pm}0.15mm$ in experimental group 3 with statiscally significant differences between control group and all experimental groups (p<0.05). There were statistically significant differences between experimental group 1 and group 2, and between experimental group 2 and group 3(P<0.05). 3. The length of junctional epithelium was $1.61{\pm}0.20mm$ in the contol group, $0.95{\pm}0.06mm$ in experimental group 1, $1.34{\pm}0.16mm$ in experimental group 2, $1.08{\pm}0.11mm$ in experimental group 3 with statiscally significant differences between control group and experimental group 1. and btween control group and experimental group 3(p<0.05). There were statistically significant differences between experimental group 1 ,and group 2, and between experimental group 2 and group 3(P<0.05). 4. The connective tissue adhesion was $1.67{\pm}O.20mm$ in the control group, $1.33{\pm}0.24mm$ in experimental group 1. $1.23{\pm}0.16mm$ in experimental group 2, $1.08{\pm}0.14mm$ in experimental group 3 with statistically significant differences between control group and all experimental groups(p<0.05). There were nostatistically significant differences between all experimental groups. As a result, epithelial migration was not prevented when calcium sulfate was used alone, but new bone and cementum formation were enhanced. Epithelial migration was prevented and new bone and cementum formation were also enhanced when calcium carbonate was used alone and when both calcium carbonate and calcium sulfate were used.
Phase change of calcium carbontae crystals in crystallization of precipitated calcium carbonate was researched by adding additives such as ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA), citric acid (CIT) and pyromellitic amid (PMA). At low temperature $20^{\circ}C$, calcite crystal was made. At high temperature $80^{\circ}C$, aragonite crystal was made without additives. At middle temperature $40^{\circ}C$ and $60^{\circ}C$, Aragonite crystal also made by adding EDTA, DTPA. The crystal growth of Aragonite was retarded by the presence of CIT, PMA and the single phase of calcite was made. It was found that additives were important factors to make the single phase of calcium carbonate.
With the wide application of ASP (alkaline-surfactant-polymer) flooding, the scaling becomes more and more serious, which is harmful to the oilfield and environment. In order to investigate the effects of HPAM on calcium carbonate crystallization, the crystallization behaviors of $CaCO_3$ in HPAM (Hydrolyzed polyacrylamide) solutions were studied and the composition and morphology of $CaCO_3$ crystal were investigated in different concentrations of polyacrylamide solutions. The crystal forms and morphologies of $CaCO_3$ were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The results show that the crystallization of $CaCO_3$ is strongly influenced by the HPAM. The paper analyzed the internal cause, and the results show: The reasons leading to the change of morphology are carboxyl groups in polyacrylamide molecule and $Ca^{2+}$ in solution form chelates by coordination bond. And the chelates are adsorbed on the calcium hydroxide surfaces of solid-liquid interfaces so as to change the formation rate of calcium carbonate crystal nucleus. The research provides a reliable basis for the mechanism research of the scaling problem in the oil extraction process of ASP flooding and the adoption of scale inhibition and scale inhibitor.
Plant diseases including gray mold caused by Botrytis cinerea are often reduced when calcium compounds are used as alternative materials in paprika. However, much less information is available about the effects of calcium compounds on controlling of $B.$$cinerea$. Seven calcium compounds such as calcium sulfate dihydrate, calcium chloride, calcium nitrate, calcium oxide, calcium hydroxide, calcium carbonate, and calcium hydride were evaluated for their effectiveness against $B.$$cinerea$ on potato dextrose agar medium. The pH of selected calcium compounds was higher (pH 8.2-10) than that of the control (pH 6.6). Calcium carbonate, calcium oxide, calcium hydride, and calcium hydroxide among seven calcium compounds were more effectively inhibited the growth of $B.$$cinerea$ than other calcium compounds. In the case of spraying the spore suspension on paprika applied with the selected four calcium compounds and supplied with the selected calcium supplements in a hydroponic culture system, the paprika treated with calcium compounds showed less severity of disease than those untreated plants. On the basis of our results, we propose that the suppressive effects of calcium compounds on $B.$$cinerea$ in paprika resulted from the supply of calcium and a certain degree of salt stress.
The shells of Anadarac tegillarca granosa, Crassostrea gigas, Crassostrea nippona, and Patinopecten yessoensis were used for preparation of calcium carbonate with high purity. Calcium content in ash of shell was the highest $64.9\%$ in Anadarac tegillarca granosa ashed for 5 hr at $900^{\circ}C$, and followed as Patinopecten yessoensis $62.5\%$, Crassostrea gigas $62.4\%$, and Crassostrea nippona $61.5\%$. Whiteness of ash was the highest 81.6-85.8 in Patinopecten yessoensis shell. Calcium contents in calcium carbonates made with shells of Anadarac tegillarca granosa by using ammonium chloride process (ACP) and ammonium nitrate process (ANP) were higher $40.03-40.04\%$ than $39.92\%$ in Anadarac tegillarca granosa ash. Calcium content was the highest $40.04\%$ in pH adjusted calcium carbonate prepared by using ANP. Whiteness of calcium carbonate prepared by using ACP and ANP was the level of 101.0-101.5. Therefore, we estimated that the calcium carbonate made by using ACP and ANP could be used potentiality as a food additive for calcium supplement.
This study was performed to develop a method for quantitative analysis obtaining the amount of calcium carbonate minerals formed when Ca salts biomimetically reacted with carbon dioxide. There were two methods compared; 1) volumetric calcimeter method that determining the amount of released carbon dioxide after calcium carbonate minerals were acidified by 4N HCl and 2) Thermogravimetry-Differential Thermal Analysis (TG-DTA) adopting differential decomposition temperature breaking-up the structural link within calcium carbonate minerals. The comparisons were made by batch experiment (i.e., biocalcification process) along with control (i.e., nominal concentration of $CaCO_3$ prepared). For the control, TG-DTA took a minor root mean square deviation (RMSD) of 1.1~5.9 mg, whereas volumetric calcimeter exposed a greater RMSD of 28.3 mg. For the biocalcification, the amount of $CaCO_3$ was more precisely obtained for TG-DTA rather than that of volumetric calcimeter. It was decided that TG-DTA was more successfully used for quantitative analysis to observe the amount of calcium carbonate minerals derived from biocalcification.

This study attempted to utilize ultrafine precipitated calcium carbonate for fluoride removal from the wastewater of electronics industries. An average particle size of the calcium carbonate was $0.96{\mu}m$, and pH of the aqueous slurry was 10 with 70% in mass. The suspension solution showed approximately 2 mL/hr of the sedimentation rate. The present calcium carbonate solution could be comparable to the conventional aqueous calcium source, $Ca(OH)_2$, for the neutralization and removal of fluoride ions. Depending on the amount of an additional alkali source, less amounts of test Ca-source slurries were required to reach the solution pH of 7.0 than that of using the aqueous calcium hydroxide. It was also found from XRD analysis that more calcium fluoride precipitates were formed by the addition of calcium carbonate solution rather than that of calcium hydroxide. In addition, Minteq equilibrium modelling estimated various ion complexes of fluoride and calcium in this process.

This study was performed to evalute effects of fillers on the mixing characteristics and mechanical properties of polymer concrete. Two types of unsaturated polyester polymer and two types of epoxy resin were used as binder material, and the portland cement, a fly ash and heavy calcium carbonate were used as filler. Following conclusions were drawn from the research results. 1. Working life of polymer concrete was not affected by filler types, but affected significantly by polymer types and quantities of hardener and catalysts. 2. Without concerning polymer types, use of heavy calcuim carbonate as filler was the best in improving workability.3. The highest strength was achieved by heavy calcium carbonate in using unsaturated polyester resin and by fly ash in using epoxy resin type.4. Elastic modulus was in the range of 2.05X 10-5~2.6X 10-5gf/cm$^2$, which was approximatly 60% of that of cement concrete. Heavy calcium carbonate with unsaturated polyester resin and fly ash with epoxy resin showed relatively higher elastic modulus.

Ultrafine calcim carbonate powders with the size of $0.05~0.1\;{\mu}m$ and the calcite phase were synthesized by the nozzle spouting method, which could be only obtained when high calcium ion concentration within slurry was maintained at the beginning of the reaction. But, in the regions of low ${Ca(OH)}_2$ concentration (0.5~1.0 wt%) or high ${Ca(OH)}_2$ concentration (<3.0 wt%), synthesized calcium carbonate powder was shown the large particle size with agglomeration. To obtain ultrafine calcium carbonate powder in this region, the methods of slurry circuation and $CO_{2}$ gas supply were changed during reaction. Resultly, it was possible to synthesize ultrafine particles (${\approx}0.05{\mu}\textrm{m}$)in the regions of low ${Ca(OH)}_2$ concentration (${\approx}0.5wt%$) and high ${Ca(OH)}_2$ concentration (${\approx}0.5wt%$), which can not be obtained the fine calcium carbonate powder still now.
