A sensitive method for the determination of trace cadmium after the preconcentration by extracting its 8-hydroxyquinoline complex into a molten benzophenone was developed. Several experimental conditions such as the pH of solution, the amounts of 8-hydroxyquinoline and benzophenone, stirring time, and standing time were optimized. Trace cadmium in 100 mL water sample was chelated with 2.5 mL of 0.001 M 8-hydroxyquinoline at pH 8.0. After 0.07 g benzophenone was added, the solution was heated to about 70 ℃ and stirred vigorously for 1 minute to dissolve the complex quantitatively in a molten benzophenone, and stood for 30 minutes to reproduce the microcrystalline benzophenone. The benzophenone containing Cd-8-hydroxyquinoline complex was filtered and dissolved in acetone. Cadmium was determined by a flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The interfering effects of diverse concomitant ions were investigated and eliminated. This method could be applied to natural water samples and the recovery of more than 90% was obtained in the real samples.
This study was carried out to reduce the problem during distillation process, which separate U, TRU (TRans Uranium) metal electro deposit, Cd and LiCl-KCl eutectic salt generating from LCC (Liquid Cadmium Cathode) electro winning process. The cadmium recovering apparatus was manufactured to separate for each metal using solid-liquid separation method. The apparatus consists of the first sieve for the separation of U and TRU metal electrodeposit, the second sieve for the separation of LiCl-KCl eutectic salt, cadmium collection basket, and a heating furnace. In addition, the size of each sieve is 2 mm to 3 mm. In this experiment, a metal wire was employed to replace TRU metal electrodeposit and U, which exist actually in a LCC crucible. In the solid state, The LiCl-KCl is separated at 340℃ at which the solid and the liquid of the remaining cadmium and LiCl-KCl eutectic salt coexists in each, after the metal wire separated at 500℃. As a result, it seems that it would be beneficial to set the processing condition in the distillation process with the additional treatment process of cadmium and LiCl-KCl eutectic salt.
The optimum conditions for measuring cadmium content of less than 0.2ppm by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry were investigated. The cadmium in urine was extracted by APDC-MIBK for the analysis by atomic absorption spectrophotometry after ashing them by a wet method. 1. Optimum conditions by APDC-MIBK and DDTC-MIBK extractions. The acidic aqueous solution was prepared with appropriate amount of 0.IN nitric acid, 5ml of 25% (W/V) sodium potasstum tartarate, 10ml of saturated ammonium sulfate, and 2ml of 2% APDC(or 1 ml of 5% DDTC) chelating agent. The total volume of solution was adjusted to 55 ml and pH to $2{\sim}10$ (or$7{\sim}10$). The aqueous solution was extracted with 10ml MIBK. Concentration of Triton X-100 did not effect the absorbance for APDC-MIBK extraction of cadmium, but absorbance decreased as the concentration increased for DDTC-MIBK extraction. The sensitivity and detection limits for the cadmium determination from APDC-MIBK extraction were 0.0038ppm and 0.0102, 0.0022ppm and 0.0116 for DDTC-MIBK, and 0.0132ppm and 0.0034 for 0.1N nitric acid. APDC-MIBK and DDTC-MIBK extractions were 3 times higher than 0.1N nitric acid for the sensitivity. 2. Excretion of cadmium in 24-hour urine by APDC-MIBK extraction. Determination of cadmium in urine by atomic absorption spectrophotometry of A.A. (Cd=2 mA) mode and B.C. (Cd=4 mA) mode and B.C. (Cd=4mA, $D_2=20mA$) mode showed some difference (p<0.05). The difference of cadmium determination and recovery according to method of standard additions and standard calibration curve method in urine was not significant (p>0.05, $93.48{\pm}11.78%,\;94.83{\pm}22.00%$). Excretion of cadmium in 24-hour urine collection from normal person and variance analysis within measurement variation was not significant (p>0.05), but between interindividual was significant (0.05). Determination of cadmium content by two different methods of flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry and dithizone colorimetry showed that the results from the two methods can be described by a regression line with a good correlation (y=1.0153x-0.2927, x=Cd by D.C., y=Cd by A.A.S., $r=0.8651^*$, p<0.01).
We prepared capsules containing Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Zoogloea ramigera cells for the removal of lead(II) and cadmium ions. Microbial cells were encapsulated and cultured in the growth medium. The S.cerevisiae cells grown in the capule did not leak through the capsule membrane. The dried cell density reached to 250 g/l on the basis of the inner volume of the 2.0 mm diameter capsule after 36 hour cultivation. The dry whole cell expolymer density of encapsulated Z.ramigera reached to 200 g/L. The capsule was crosslinked with triethylene tetramine and glutaric dialdehyde solutions. The cadmium uptake of encapsulated whole cell expolymer of Z.ramigera was 55mg Cd/g biosorbent. The adsorption line followed well Langmuir isotherm. The lead uptake of the encapsulated S. cerevisiae was about 30 mg Pb/g biomass. The optimum pH of the lead uptake using encapsulated S. cerevisiae was found to be 6. Freundlich model showed a little better fit to the adsorption data than Langmuir model 95 percent of the lead adsorbed on the encapsulated biosorbents was desorbed by the 1 M HCl solution. The capsule was reused 50 batches without loosing the metal uptake capacity. And the mechanical strength of the crosslinked capsule was retained after 50 trials.
A large amount of $2.1{\times}10^6m^3$ of polluted sediment was dredged from the Masan Bay and deposited in Gapo confined area, Masan, Korea. The six representative sediments were obtained and analyzed for issue components. The data was discussed with the species of benthos and their distribution. It was judged that toxicological effects of sediment analyzed ranged from ERL to ERM with copper and zinc, and ERL with cadmium, chrome, lead and nickel by the Adverse Biological Effects. The dredging index (DI) of sediments stabilized for 10 years since dumping the confined site was calculated and compared with the DI values of dredged sediment itself. DI values decreased from 0.67 to $0.07{\sim}0.18$, which reflects DI value less than 0.2 is good for benthos in the sediment by the natural recovery of dredged materials. The ecological recovery was confirmed in this confined area as a habitat of benthic organisms.
Disposal of hazardous ions in the aqueous streams is a significant industrial waste problem.. Waste streams from electronics, electroplating, and photographic industries contain metal ions such as copper, nickel, zinc, chromium(IV), cadmium, aluminum, silver, and gold, amongst others in various aqueous solutions such as sulfates, chlorides, fluorocarbons, and cyanides. Typical plating solutions having similar compositions are listed in Table 1. Spent process streams in catalyst manufacturing facilities also contain precious metals such as Ag, Pt, and Pd. Developing an effective recovery process of these metal ions for reuse is important.

As part of the spent fuel treatment program at the Idaho National Laboratory, a vacuum distillation process is being employed for the recovery of actinide products following an electrorefining process. Separation of the actinide products from a molten salt electrolyte and cadmium is achieved by a batch operation called cathode processing. A cathode processor has been designed and developed to efficiently remove the process chemicals and consolidate the actinide products for further processing. This paper describes the fundamentals of cathode processing, the evolution of the equipment design, the operation and efficiency of the equipment, and recent developments at the cathode processor. In addition, challenges encountered during the processing of irradiated spent nuclear fuel in the cathode processor will be discussed.
