Exploring Undergraduate Education of Industrial Engineers:Result of Survey for Graduates with Industrial Engineering Degree (산업공학 학부교육의 탐색:졸업생 설문조사 결과를 중심으로)

  • The main purpose of this research is to find out whether curriculums of industrial engineering (IE) departments meet the demand of IE graduates working in various fields. The research was conducted as an online questionnaire survey selecting IE Graduates working in industries as practising engineers. 1,324 participants were validated among 1,477 participants. 13 fields were selected and used in the survey. Those were; 1) Mathematical statistics, 2) Computer, 3) Purchase, 4) Production system, 5) Logistics, 6) Marketing, 7) Monetary, 8) Experiment methods, 9) Operations Research (OR), 10) Human Factors, 11) Quality, 12) Engineering management, and 13) Information systems. Using the 5-scale Likert rating, each education subject was assessed both in terms of its usefulness in practices and the amount it being taught in school. As a result, courses such as motion/time study, linear programming that IE has traditionally focused showed less usefulness in practices while it is taught in relatively large amount in schools. However, courses such as 6 sigma, CRM which are closely related to industrial practices showed high usefulness in practices compared with low degree of teaching in school. This was the first ever large scalesurvey conducted for IE graduates in Korea. The result of survey displayed many helpful information on current status and future direction of IE education in Korea.

  • Most banks use only demographic information such as gender, age, occupation and address to segment customers, but they do not reflect financial behavior patterns of customers. In this study, we aim to solve the problems by using various big data in a bank and to develop customer segmentation method which can be widely used in many banks in the future. In this paper, we propose an approach of segmenting clustering blocks with bottom-up method. This method has an advantage that it can accurately reflect various financial needs of customers based on various transaction patterns, channel contact patterns, and existing demographic information. Based on this, we will develop various marketing models such as product recommendation, financial need rating calculation, and customer churn-out prediction based on this, and we will adapt this models for the marketing strategy of NH Bank.

  • It is growing in size of database in companies. This caused to develope data mining techniques to predictive information from the large database. Costs and other effects can give variety of sales exploding through the analysis of the differences. Analysis of the various classification techniques, various angle can be analyzed point of view of the area information. The analysis of rules and patterns associated with a large amount of useful information from the database can be analyzed effectively. Goods store were analyzed using association rules, one of the data mining analysis techniques. Through this type of existing products according to analyze customer buying patterns, data mining has been studied to establish strategic marketing analysis.

  • It is critical to manage risks to complete IS(Information Systems) projects successfully. Identifying risk factors would be the first step for the project risk management. Previous research has discussed the issue with various points of view, such as different risk factors based on project types and roles involved in their projects. This paper empirically explored how people perceive different risk factors by project development methodology, between self-developing IS using programming language like C, Visual Basic and adapting software package already developed by software venders like ERP, CRM packages. There are researches regarding project risk factors for project management in the several point of views. And there are also researches regarding comparison between self-developing and adapting software packages methodology in IS project. However, there are no study on project risk factors comparison between self-developing IS using programming language and adapting software packages already developed by software venders in IS project. This research can be differentiated from previous ones, because it was considered both point of project risk management and development methodology in IS project. This research results implied meaningful messages to enterprise company to be planned IS projects and people who involved in IS projects. They should consider and need to prepare differently according to each development methodology for preventing project risks. It makes them reduce project risks in each case and complete successfully IS projects. Especially, if they have no experiences for implementing software packages, they can forecast the project risks and prepare them in advance.

  • Majority of knowledge management(KM) studies in e-government have been confined to facilitate KM within an organization. But due to citizen-centric(citizen-driven) paradigm shift and advance of web 2.0 communication in recent years, KM between governments and citizen in e-government portals is becoming an important consideration. So a series of studies on knowledge enhanced e-government portal get under way by considering that it is necessary to enhance knowledge of e-government portal and assuming it improves the usability of portal. While the topics of knowledge enhancement and e-government(portal) are widely discussed in their own domains there is a paucity of studies that address these constructs in a joint context. This paper aims to propose conceptual framework of knowledge enhanced e-government portal through structuralization of theoretical discussion with holistic approach. This framework presents an evolutional path of knowledge enhanced e-government portal that consists of three phases and it will be used for realizing the knowledge enhanced portal project as a basic reference model.

How can we narrow the digital divide among SMEs in APEC member economies? (중소기업 정보화 수준 격차 해소방안에 관한 국가 간 비교연구)

  • This study, by adopting case study methodology, is focused on examining the present state and analyzing the cause of the digital divide, and suggesting policies for bridging the divide, specifically in view of SMEs. We have taken cases of manufacturing companies, visiting and interviewing 18 SMEs in 10 APEC member economies which show sharp difference in usage of ICT. In order to analyze the digital gap among SMEs, we used 5 variables that are composed of computer hardware, computer software, Internet, readiness of ICT, and performance of ICT adoption, while categorizing the cases into low and high tier based on the national ICT index. From a computer hardware perspective, the high tier (0.66) has almost double the number of PC’s per employee, compared with the low tiers (0.34). This gap can be explained by financial availability of low income and high tariff in the developing economies. In the computer software perspective, the SMEs in the low tier had some restrictive use of computer applications such as financial and accounting management and document management, while those in the high tier enjoyed more diversity in the use of applications such as inventory management, sales management, financial and accounting management, procurement management, CRM, and ERP. In view of the readiness of ICT, the difference in ICT infrastructure and financial status between the low and high tier was far wider than any other variables. As a result of ICT adoption, SMEs benefited in view of learning and growth, internal business processes, customer service, and financial affairs. To effectively bridge the digital divide between the low and high tier, actions such as setting up a secondary market of used computers among cooperating developed and developing countries, developing and diffusing good business applications, and building speedy, low-cost telecommunication infrastructures should be taken.

  • The rapid growth of e-commerce has made both companies and customers face a new situation. Whereas companies have become to be harder to survive due to more and more competitions, the opportunity for customers to choose among more and more products has increased. So, the recommender systems that recommend suitable products to the customer have an important position in E-commerce. This research introduces collaborative filtering based recommender system which helps customers find the products they would like to purchase by producing a list of top-N recommended products. The suggested methodology is based on decision tree, product taxonomy, and association rule mining. Decision tree is used to select target customers, who have high possibility of purchasing recommended products. We applied the recommender system to a Korean department store. The methodology is evaluated with the analysis of a real department store case and is compared with other methodologies.

  • It is important to integrate an enterprise application for automating of the business process, which is responded by a flow of market environment. There are two categories of method that integrate enterprise applications. One is Synchronous Integration, and the other is Asynchronous Integration. EAI(Enterprise Application Integration) and Web service which of the asynchronous integration is focused in the automating method of the business process. After we construct the application integration for automating of the business process, we have to concern about managing of the business transaction. Many Organizations have proposed the process method of business transaction based on 2-phase commit protocol. But this method can't supply the phase that classify the transaction by transaction weight. In this Paper, we Propose an efficient method of transaction process for business transactions, which is composed by ‘Classify Phase’ that classify transactions. We called this model “3-Phase Commit Method Applied by Classify Phase”, we design this model to manage an resource of enterprise efficiently. The proposed method is compared by the method based on 2-Phase commit that could be a problem of management the resource of enterprise, and the advantage of this method is certified to propose the solution of that problem.

  • It has been said that Warehouse Management System(WMS) in e-Trade has considerably contributed to improvement of distribution industry. However, in the aspect of management we have many technical problems such as transportation due to tremendous demands of online data. Therefore, for Korea to be a hub of distribution and information, this is the best time to prepare the foundation of Supply Chain Management(SCM) under Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) the and make a good use of WMS. The purposes of this study are presented as follows: First, it is to examine the general flow process of WMS in each field of our e-Trade Second, it is to present problems and plans of improvements involved in WMS in e-Trade. In short, this study aims at presenting interpretative foundation of WMS in a practical viewpoint, not presenting technical directions of WMS.

Prediction of Indoor Radon Concentration through the Exhalation from Korean Yellow Residual Soil, Hwangtoh as a Building Material

  • The radon gas from nature mainly considers a cause of radon problems, and it is closely affect human life cycle. Korean yellow residual soil, Hwangtoh, widely used as a building material, is considered to be one of major sources of indoor radon. However, there have, as yet, been no studies about radon from Hwangtoh in mass market brands. Here, we investigated the indoor radon concentrations and exhalation rates in four Hwangtohs from different brand names and regional features. The Closed Chamber Method (CCM) conducted by a Continuous Radon Monitor (CRM) has been used for the rates of radon exhalation. Based on equations of previous references, the indoor radon concentrations were deducted. As a result, the radon surface exhalation rates resulted in the 1.4208 to 3.0293 Bq·㎡·h-1 range. Significant differences were found among Hwangtohs according to production regions. Materials with higher radon concentration required a longer time to reach a quasi-steady state in a given environment, in other words, the number of half-life cycles increased from a set starting point. The experimentally identified Hwangtohs demonstrated its safety for construction purposes. There exists, so far, a possibility to exert influence radon emanation due to unidentified factors. Therefore, it is necessary to corroborate with more research by increasing the number of Hwangtohs, considering the other references reported high radon exhalation rates. In addition, it is highly recommended that the radon exhalation rates should be measured for all building materials for preventing human health before the material usage.
