Cobalt(II) chloride, a chemical compound with the formula$CoCl_2$, has been widely used in the treatment of anemia, as a chemical agent for the induction of hypoxia in cell cultures, and is known to activate hypoxic signaling. However, excessive exposure to cobalt is associated with several clinical conditions, including asthma, pneumonia, and hematological abnormalities, and can lead to tissue and cellular toxicity. It is also known to induce apoptosis. One of the questions was that of whether $CoCl_2$ might induce apoptosis via endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress in neurons. To address this question, first, the level of DNA fragmentation was measured for assay of apoptotic rates using $CoCl_2$ with neuron PC12 cells. After confirmation of apoptosis inductions, under the same conditions, the expression levels of ER stress associated factors [ER chaperones Bip, calnexin, ERp72, ERp29, PDI, and ER membrane kinases (IRE1, ATF6, PERK)] were examined by RT-PCR and Western blotting. These results indicated that apoptosis is induced through activation of ER membrane kinases via ER stress. In conclusion, during induction of apoptosis through $CoCl_2$-induced hypoxia in neuron PC12 cells, ER membrane kinase of IRE1 was dominantly up-expressed, and, consecutively, TRAF2, which has been suggested to be one of the links connecting apoptosis and ER stress, was strongly up-expressed.

We investigated the mechanism on occurring of briny injury in four fruit species (apple, pear, grape, peach). Briny injury of apple, pear, peach, and grape was induced by the foliar splay of saline solutions. Browning symptom was initiated one hour after the spray of 3% NaCl in apple, pearl and peach trees. while two hour were needed for grape, but the latter developed the symptom faster than the formers. Foliar spray of 3% NaCl resulted in 4-fold increase in ethylene production 24 h after the spray, and the production was returned to early stage rate after 72 h. Ethylene production of control was nearly constant with slight decrease after 4 h. Browning and defoliation response to the spray of 3% NaCl on lower side were not different from the spray on both sides regardless of fruit species, while no injury symptoms occurred by the spiny on upper side. In saline damage for treated date, lateral bud was only germinated in apple at 30 July. A shoot apex was 100% grew in all fruit tree. In result for hormonal content of leaf and shoot apex, control was high t-zeatin content in leaf. However, IAA and ABA content was increasing in high saline concentration.

This study developed probabilistic models to predict Salmonella growth in processed meat products formulated with varying concentrations of NaCl and $NaNO_2$. A five-strain mixture of Salmonella was inoculated in nutrient broth supplemented with NaCl (0%, 0.25%, 0.5%, 0.75%, 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.25%, and 1.75%) and $NaNO_2$ (0, 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, 90, 105, and 120 ppm). The inoculated samples were then incubated under aerobic and anaerobic conditions at $4^{\circ}C$, $7^{\circ}C$, $10^{\circ}C$, $12^{\circ}C$, and $15^{\circ}C$ for up to 60 days. Growth (assigned the value of 1) or no growth (assigned the value of 0) for each combination was evaluated by turbidity. These growth response data were analyzed with a logistic regression to evaluate the effect of NaCl and $NaNO_2$ on Salmonella growth. The results from the developed model were compared to the observed data obtained from the frankfurters to evaluate the performance of the model. Results from the developed model showed that a single application of $NaNO_2$ at low concentrations did not inhibit Salmonella growth, whereas NaCl significantly (p<0.05) inhibited Salmonella growth at $10^{\circ}C$, $12^{\circ}C$, and $15^{\circ}C$, regardless of the presence of oxygen. At $4^{\circ}C$ and $7^{\circ}C$, Salmonella growth was not observed in either aerobic or anaerobic conditions. When $NaNO_2$ was combined with NaCl, the probability of Salmonella growth decreased. The validation value confirmed that the performance of the developed model was appropriate. This study indicates that the developed probabilistic models should be useful for describing the combinational effect of $NaNO_2$ and NaCl on inhibiting Salmonella growth in processed meat products.

This study developed probabilistic models to determine the initiation time of growth of Pseudomonas spp. in combinations with $NaNO_2$ and NaCl concentrations during storage at different temperatures. The combination of 8 NaCl concentrations (0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1, 1.25, 1.5, and 1.75%) and 9 $NaNO_2$ concentrations (0, 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, 90, 105, and 120 ppm) were prepared in a nutrient broth. The medium was placed in the wells of 96-well microtiter plates, followed by inoculation of a five-strain mixture of Pseudomonas in each well. All microtiter plates were incubated at 4, 7, 10, 12, and $15^{\circ}C$ for 528, 504, 504, 360 and 144 h, respectively. Growth (growth initiation; GI) or no growth was then determined by turbidity every 24 h. These growth response data were analyzed by a logistic regression to produce growth/no growth interface of Pseudomonas spp. and to calculate GI time. NaCl and $NaNO_2$ were significantly effective (p<0.05) on inhibiting Pseudomonas spp. growth when stored at $4-12^{\circ}C$. The developed model showed that at lower NaCl concentration, higher $NaNO_2$ level was required to inhibit Pseudomonas growth at $4-12^{\circ}C$. However, at $15^{\circ}C$, there was no significant effect of NaCl and $NaNO_2$. The model overestimated GI times by $58.2{\pm}17.5$ to $79.4{\pm}11%$. These results indicate that the probabilistic models developed in this study should be useful in calculating the GI times of Pseudomonas spp. in combination with NaCl and $NaNO_2$ concentrations, considering the over-prediction percentage.
Four legume plants showed better growth by the external nitrogen supply rather than the symbiotic nitrogen fixation only under salt additions. In case of Glycine max and Phaseolus angularis, total nitrogen contents decreased by high salinity level but their amino acid levels significantly increased with the increase of salt treatments and indicated high soluble-/insoluble-N ratios. Cassia tora and Albizzia julibrissin contained less amino acids than G. max and P. angularis but total N (esp. insoluble N fraction) increased with higher salt levels. Asparagine occurred as a main amino acid especially in G. max and P. angularis and can be seen as potential N-storage form in these plants. It might be play an important role for the osmoregulation mechanism under the saline condition. Meanwhile, to investigate what kinds of nitrogen sources are effective for overcoming salt stress on soybean plants, various N forms and concentrations (NH₄NO₃-N, NO₃-N, NH₄NO₃-N; 2.5 and 5 mM) were additionally supplied to the salt gradient medium. Soybean plants treated with NH₄NO₃-N showed the best growth up to 40 mM NaCl and NO₃- fed plants indicated good growth even at 80 mM NaCl treatments. Contrary to NH₄NO₃- and NO₃- fed plants, NH₄/sup +/- fed plants showed remarkable growth reduction and died by 40 and 80 mM NaCl treatments after the first harvest (15th day). Consequently, these results suggest that salt excluding and resistant capacities of soybean plants under NaCl treatments are increased in order of NH₄ - N, control, NO₃- N and NH₄NO₃- N depending on N concentration except NH₄- N treatments.
In this study, $Eu^{2+}$ ion was used as an activator in order to enhance the PL(photoluminescene) and PSL(photostimulated luminescence) intensity of $MCl_2:Eu^{2+}$(M = Ca, Sr, Ba)phosphors and the chracteristics of PL and PSL of the phosphors were investigated. The emission of $MCl_2:Eu^{2+}$(M = Ca, Sr, Ba) phosphors shows a shift wavelength when the host caution changes. The optimal preparing conditions of $CaCl_2:Eu^{2+}$ phosphor were 0.5 mol% of $EuCl_2$ and the sintering temperature were $745^{\circ}C$, 45 min. in $H_2$ atmosphere. The PL and PSL spectra of $CaCl_2:Eu^{2+}$ locate in the range of $365{\sim}388\;nm$, peaking at 370 and 380 nm. The optimal preparing conditions of $BaCl_2:Eu^{2+}$ phosphor were 0.5 mol% of $EuCl_2$ and the sintering temperature were $905^{\circ}C$, 45 min. in $H_2$ atmosphere. The PL and PSL spectra of $BaCl_2:Eu^{2+}$ locate in the range of $370{\sim}460\;nm$, peaking at 398 nm. The optimal preparing conditions of $SrCl_2:Eu^{2+}$ phosphor were 0.5mol% of $EuCl_2$ and the sintering temperature were $840^{\circ}C$, 45min. in $H_2$ atmosphere. The PL and PSL spectra of $SrCl_2:Eu^{2+}$ locate in the range of $380{\sim}440\;nm$, peaking at 407 nm. The dose response of the $MCl_2:Eu^{2+}$(0.5 mol%)(M = Ba, Sr) phosphors were linear within $0.25{\sim}200\;mGy$ of 100 kV X-ray and the PSL intensity of the $SrCl_2:Eu^{2+}$ and $BaCl_2:Eu^{2+}$ phosphors faded to approximately 60 and 40% respectively after 120 min at room temperature.
A novel electrode for an NO gas sensor was fabricated from electrospun polyacrylonitrile fibers by thermal treatment to obtain carbon fibers followed by chemical activation to enhance the activity of gas adsorption sites. The activation process improved the porous structure, increasing the specific surface area and allowing for efficient gas adsorption. The gas sensing ability and response time were improved by the increased surface area and micropore fraction. High performance gas sensing was then demonstrated by following a proposed mechanism based on the activation effects. Initially, the pore structure developed by activation significantly increased the amount of adsorbed gas, as shown by the high sensitivity of the gas sensor. Additionally, the increased micropore fraction enabled a rapid sensor response time due to improve the adsorption speed. Overall, the sensitivity for NO gas was improved approximately six-fold, and the response time was reduced by approximately 83% due to the effects of chemical activation.
The objectives of this study were to investigate the effect of fermentation medium on the hydroxyl radical scavenging activity of exopolysaccharides from Inonotus obliquus by response surface methodology (RSM). A two-level fractional factorial design was used to evaluate the effect of different components of the medium. Corn flour, peptone, and $KH_2PO_4$ were important factors significantly affecting hydroxyl radical scavenging activity. These selected variables were subsequently optimized using path of steepest ascent (descent), a central composite design, and response surface analysis. The optimal medium composition was (% w/v): corn flour 5.30, peptone 0.32, $KH_2PO_4$ 0.26, $MgSO_4$ 0.02, and $CaCl_2$ 0.01. Under the optimal condition, the hydroxyl radical scavenging rate (49.4%) was much higher than that using either basal fermentation medium (10.2%) and single variable optimization of fermentation medium (35.5%). The main monosaccharides components of the RSM optimized polysaccharides are rhamnose, arabinose, xylose, mannose, glucose, and galactose with molar proportion at 1.45%, 3.63%, 2.17%, 15.94%, 50.00%, and 26.81%.
Poly (vinylchloride) (PVC) membrane electrodes based on neutral carrier, tetracycline was prepared as an active sensor for Hg(II) ion, and tested in different contents of the potassium tetrakis (4-chlorophenyl) borate (KTpClPB) as lipophilic salt. Bis (2-ethylhexyl) sebacate (DOS), bis(l-butylpentyl) adipate (BBPA), 2-nitrophenyl octyl ether (NPOE) and dibutyl phthalate (DBP) were used as diverse plasticizing solvent mediators. This electrode shows excellent potentiometric response characteristics and display good linearity with log $[Hg^{+2}]$ versus EMF response, over a range of concentrations between $10^{-7}$ and $10^{-3}M$. With 30.8mV/decade Nernstian slope, the detection limit was $6.9{\times}10^{-9}M$ and the response time was less than 20s. The proposed electrode yields very good selectivity for mercury (II) ion over many cations such as alkali, alkaline earth, transition and heavy metal ions. And it shows a very stable potential values in a wide pH range. This reliable electrode prepared was kept at least a month without considerable alteration in their response to Hg (II) ion.

New lipophilic Crown-4 compounds of 16-membered rings containing furan (neutral carrier,I), tetrahydrofuran (neutral carrier,II) and lithium complex of the latter (neutral carrier,III) have been synthesized and tested as the active sensors for lithium ion in poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) membrane electrode, in the presence and absence of an anion excluder, tetrakis(4-chloro-phenyl)borate (KTClPB), 2-nitrophenyl phenyl ether (NPPE), tris(2-ethylhexyl)phosphate (TEHP), o-nitrophenyl octyl ether (NPOE), dioctyl adipate (DOA), bis(2-ethylhexyl)adipate (BEHA), di-n-octylphenyl phosphonate (DOPP) were used as plasticizing solvent mediators. The electrode response function had a nearly Nernstian slope of 54-61 mV per decade (25$^{\circ}$C) within the concentration range of $10^{-1}-10^{-4}$ M LiCl and the detection limits for all electrodes were ca. $5{\times}10^{-4}$ M. The response time of the electrode was faster at the higher lithium concentration and the response of the electrode was stable for longer than 6 months. The sensor membranes exhibit improved response times and increased lifetimes as compared to the system described earlier.
