The activities of Ni(20wt%)/$La_2O_3$, Ni(20wt%)/${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$, and Ni(20wt%)/$SiO_2$ catalyst for $CO_2$ reforming of $CH_4$ were investigated in a fixed bed flow reactor under atmospheric condition. Catalyst characterization using XRD, TEM, SEM, BET analysis were also conducted. The catalytic activity of Ni(20wt%)/$La_2O_3$ catalyst has relatively superior to that of Ni(20wt%)/${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ and Ni(20wt%)/$SiO_2$ catalyst. The good activity of Ni(20wt%)/$La_2O_3$ catalyst seems to depend on reduced $Ni^{\circ}$ phases of NiO($\rightarrow$ Ni + O), $LaNiO_3$($\rightarrow$$Ni+La_2O_3$), Ni crystalline phases, and decoration of Ni phases by lanthanum species is also an important factor. Ni(20wt%)/${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ and Ni(20wt%)/$SiO_2$ catalyst due to surface acidity resulted in the deposition of wisker type and encapsulate carbon on the surface of catalyst, but Ni(20wt%)/$La_2O_3$ catalyst did not show carbon on the surface of catalyst up to 8.5hr reaction.
Activity improvement of Ni metal catalysts for carbon dioxide reforming was studied using HY-zeolite as the main supporter. As the reaction temperature increased, $CH_4$ and $CO_2$ conversions increased, and conversions higher than 80% was obtained above $700^{\circ}C$. As the Ni loading increased, the catalyst activity increased, and the highest activity was shown for the Ni loading of 13wt%. The HY-zeolite support showed the highest intial conversions of $CH_4$ and $CO_2$, but it showed faster deactivation than a ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ support. Nevertheless, it maintained the $CH_4$conversion higher than 80% after 24 hr reaction. The effect of promoters such as Mg, Mn, K, and Ca was also studied. It was observed that the Mg promotor exhibited the highest catalyst activity and less deactivation compared with Mn, K and Ca. After 24hr reaction, The optimum Mg content was found to be 5wt%.
In this study, the reaction characteristics of combined steam and carbon dioxide reforming of methane (CSCRM) reaction using Pd-Ni-YSZ catalyst were investigated according to types of catalysts and gas compositions. Catalysts were prepared in the form of powder and porous disk. The injected gases were supplied at different ratios of $CH_4/CO_2/H_2O$. As a result, the conversion of $CH_4$ and $CO_2$ was improved as a result of using the porous disc type catalyst as compared with that of the powder type catalyst. When the $CH_4/CO_2/H_2O$ ratio of the feed gas was 1 : 0.5 : 0.5, the $H_2/CO$ ratio was adjusted close to 2. However, after 6 hours of the reaction, $CH_4$ conversion was partially reduced by the carbon deposition and the pressure drop increased from 0.1 to 0.8. This issue was then solved by optimizing the water content. As a result, it was confirmed that the durability was secured by preventing the carbon deposition when the gas was supplied at a $CH_4/CO_2/H_2O$ ratio of 1 : 0.5 : 1, and the conversion rate was maintained at a relatively high level.
Thermodynamic analysis on carbon dioxide reforming of methane was performed using a computer program which can handle condensed species in the products, and the reforming experiments were conducted over $Al_2O_3$, $La_2O_3$, ZSM-5, MCM-41, KIT-1 supported nickel catalysts, and a commercial ICI 46-1. It was estabished that a system which consists of $CH_4$, $CO_2$, CO, $H_2$, $H_2O$, and C is appropriate for theoretical equilibrium calculations and addition of water vapor or oxygen was found to diminish the contribution of carbon dioxide in reforming. Silicate molecular sieve-supported catalysts such as Ni/ZSM-5, Ni/MCM-41, Ni/KIT-1 were effective for high $CH_4$ and $CO_2$ conversions as well as for high CO yield. Coke formation was suppressed when CaO was added as a promoter. Ni/Ca/KIT-1 which contains 10% Ni with 3% Ca showed conversion approaching equilibrium levels above $650^{\circ}C$ and maintained constant activity over 20 h. Despite increased space velocity, relatively high conversion and CO yield were observed.
The methane dry reforming has received the considerable attention in recent years, mainly as an attractive route to produce synthesis gas (CO, $H_2$) from green-house gases ($CH_4$, $CO_2$) for resources. However, this process has not been commercialized due to the high temperature and catalyst deactivation. In this study, Co-Ru-Zr catalysts supported on $SiO_2$ were studied for the characterization of methane dry reforming reaction and the preliminary data for process development were achieved. The crystal structure of catalysts was measured by XRD, the surface area and pore size were analyzed by BET, and the element composition of catalyst were analyzed by EDS. Conversions of methane and carbon dioxide were analyzed by GC. In addition, reaction rate constants were obtained from the reaction kinetic study and the optimum catalyst size that does not affect mass transfer from reactants was also determined. The selected pellet-type catalyst maintained activation for 720 h at $850^{\circ}C$.
Hydrogen could be produced from any substance containing hydrogen atoms, such as water, hydrocarbon (HC) fuels, acids or bases. Hydrocarbon fuels couold be converted to hydrogen-rich gas through reforming process for hydrogen production. Even though fuel cell have high efficiency with pure hydrogen from gas tank, it is more beneficial to generate hydrogen from city gas (mainly methane) in residential application such as domestic or office environments. Thus hydrogen is generated by reforming process using hydrocarbon. Unfortunately, the reforming process for hydrogen production is accompanied with unavoidable impurities. Impurities such as CO, $CO_2$, $H_2S$, $NH_3$, and $CH_4$ in hydrogen could cause negative effects on fuel cell performance. Those effects are kinetic losses due to poisoning of electrode catalysts, ohmic losses due to proton conductivity reduction including membrane and catalyst ionomer layers, and mass transport losses due to degrading catalyst layer structure and hydrophobic property. Hydrogen produced from reformer eventually contains around 73% of $H_2$, 20% or less of $CO_2$, 5.8% of less of $N_2$, or 2% less of $CH_4$, and 10ppm or less of CO. Most impurities are removed using pressure swing adsorption (PSA) process to get high purity hydrogen. However, high purity hydrogen production requires high operation cost of reforming process. The effect of carbon dioxide on fuel cell performance was investigated in this experiment. The performance of PEM fuel cell was investigated using current vs. potential experiment, long run (10 hr) test, and electrochemical impedance measurement when the concentrations of carbon dioxide were 10%, 20% and 30%. Also, the concentration of impurity supplied to the fuel cell was verified by gas chromatography (GC).
As global warming accelerates, greenhouse gas reduction becomes more important. Carbon dioxide dry reforming is a promising green-house gas reduction technology that can obtain CO and $H_2$ which are high value-added materials by utilizing $CO_2$ and $CH_4$ which are greenhouse gases. However, there is a significant coking problem during operation of the dry reforming reactor. Because the carbon dioxide dry reforming is a strong endothermic reaction, the temperature of the reactor drops near the reactor inlet and causes coke formation. To solve this problem, it is important to ensure that the reaction takes place in a temperature range where coke production is minimized. In this study, we proposed a design method that can maintain reaction temperature in the region where the coke is rarely generated by using the new catalyst configuration method. The design method also optimizes the reactor by solving the optimization problem which minimizes the reactor length for a given reaction conversion by using the fuel flow rate, catalyst density, and output temperature by section as optimization variables.
Naphtha Cracking Bottom (NCB) oil was heat reformed at various reforming temperature and time, and the volatile extracts were characterized including yields, molecular weight distributions, and representative compounds. The yield of extract increased as the increase of reforming temperature ($360{\sim}420^{\circ}C)$ and time (1~4 hr). Molecular weight of the as-received NCB oil was under 200, and those of extracts were distributed in the range of 100-250, and far smaller than those of precursor pitches of 380-550. Naphtalene-based compounds were more than 70% in the as-received NCB oil, and most of them were isomers of compounds bonding functional groups, such as methyl ($CH_{3^-}$) and ethyl ($C_2H_{5^-}$). When the as-received NCB oil was reformed at $360^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr, the most prominent compound was 1,2-Butadien, 3-phenyl- (24.57%), while naphthalene became main component again as increasing the reforming temperature.

The catalytic steam reforming of woody biomass tar and soot to convert a synthetic gas containing hydrogen was investigated by using a bench-scale biomass gasification system. One commercial nickel-based catalyst, Katalco 46-6Q, and two different kinds of natural minerals, dolomite and olivine, were tested as a reforming catalyst at various reforming temperatures. The reaction characteristics of woody biomass tar were also investigated by TGA at a variety of heating rates. With all three catalysts conversion efficiency of tar and soot increased at increasing temperature. The reforming of tar and soot in the synthetic gas induce the increase of combustible gases such as $H_2$, CO and $CH_4$ in the product gas. The nickel-based catalyst showed a higher tar and soot conversion efficiency than mineral catalysts under the same temperature conditions.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the optimal condition for the hydrogen-rich gas production and the CO removal by reforming of gliding arc plasma reforming system using biogas. The parametric screening studies were carried out according to changes of steam feed amount, catalyst bed temperature in water gas reactor and catalyst bed temperature, input air flow rate in preferential oxidation reactor. The standard condition is as follows. The steam/carbon ratio, catalyst bed temperature, total gas flow rate, input electric power and biogas composition rate ($CH_4$ : $CO_2$) were fixed 3, $700^{\circ}C$, 16 L/min, 2.4 kW and 6 : 4, respectively. The results are as follow, HTS optimum operating conditions were S/C ratio of 3 and reactor temperature of $500^{\circ}C$. LTS were S/C ratio of 2.9 and temperature of $300^{\circ}C$. Also, PROX I optimum conditions were input air flow rate of 300 mL/min and reactor temperature of $190^{\circ}C$. PROX II were 200 mL/min and $190^{\circ}C$ respectively. After having passed through each reactor, the results were as follows: 55% of $H_{2}$ yield, 0% of CO selectivity, 99% of $CH_4$ conversion rate, 27% of $CO_2$ conversion rate, respectively.
