  • The objective of the trial was to study the relationship between the methane ($CH_4$) production and the Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein System (CNCPS) carbohydrate fractions of feeds for cattle and the suitability of CNCPS carbohydrate fractions as the dietary variables in modeling the $CH_4$ production in rumen fermentation. Forty-five rations for cattle with the concentrate/roughage ratios of 10:90, 20:80, 30:70, 40:60, and 50:50 were formulated as feed samples. The Menke and Steingass's gas test was used for the measurement of $CH_4$ production. The feed samples were incubated for 48 h and the $CH_4$ production was analyzed using gas chromatography. Statistical analysis indicated that the $CH_4$ production (mL) was closely correlated with the CNCPS carbohydrate fractions (g), i.e. CA (sugars); $CB_1$ (starch and pectin); $CB_2$ (available cell wall) in a multiple linear pattern: $CH_4=(89.16{\pm}14.93)$ $CA+(124.10{\pm}13.90)$ $CB_1+(30.58{\pm}11.72)$ $CB_2+(3.28{\pm}7.19)$, $R^2=0.81$, p<0.0001, n = 45. Validation of the model using 10 rations indicated that the $CH_4$ production of the rations for cattle could accurately be predicted based on the CNCPS carbohydrate fractions. The trial indicated that the CNCPS carbohydrate fractions CA, $CB_1$ and $CB_2$ were suitable dietary variables for predicting the $CH_4$ production in rumen fermentation in vitro.

  • A series of aluminum complexes supported by $\beta$-ketoamino, ligand-bearing, 3-position substituents $LAlEt_2$ ($L=CH_3C(O)C(Cl)=C(CH_3)NAr\;(L_1)$, $L=CH_3C(O)C(H)=C(CH_3)NAr\;(L_2)$, $L=CH_3C(O)C(Ph)=C(CH_3)NAr\;(L_3)$, and $L=CH_3C(O)C(Me)=C(CH_3)NAr\;(L_4)$, $Ar=2,6-^iPr_2C6H_3$) were synthesized in situ and employed in the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of $\varepsilon$-caprolactone ($\varepsilon$-CL) and cyclohexene oxide (CHO). The 3-position substituents on the $\beta$-ketoamino ligand backbone of the aluminum complexes influenced the catalyst activity remarkably for both ROP of $\varepsilon$-CL and CHO. Aluminum $\beta$-ketoamino complexes displayed different catalytic behavior in ROP of $\varepsilon$-CL and CHO. The order of the catalytic activity of $LAlEt_2$ was $L_1AlEt_2$>$L_2AlEt_2$>$L_3AlEt_2$>$L_4AlEt_2$ for ROP of $\varepsilon$-CL, being opposite to the electron-donating ability of the 3-position substituents on the $\beta$-ketoamino ligand, while the order of the catalytic activity for ROP of CHO was $L_1AlEt_2$>$L_3AlEt_2$>$L_4AlEt_2$>$L_2AlEt_2$. The effects of reaction temperature and time on the ROP were also investigated for both $\varepsilon$-CL and CHO.

  • New Palladium(0)-olefin complexes, $(PMe_3)_2Pd{CH_2=C(CH_3)COOH} \;and\;(PMe_3)_2Pd{(CH_3)CH=CHCOOH}$ have been prepared by treating $Pd(PMe_3)_2$(styrene) with methacrylic acid and trans-crotonic acid, respectively. These complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, IR and $^1H-,\;^{13}C-,\;and\;^{31}P$-NMR spectroscopy. The carboxylic acid entity was found non-bonded with palladium while ${\pi}$-bond is formed between the olefin double bond and Pd(0). The results are compared with the metallacycle formation the reaction of Pd(PMe3)2(styrene) with 3-butenoic acid.

  • The influence of combustor pressure on the local reaction characteristics of $CH_4$/air flames was investigated by measurements of local chemiluminescence intensity. Induced flow flames are often applied to the industrial boiler systems and incinerator in order to improve heat transfer and prevent exhaust gas leakage. In order to investigate combustion characteristics in the induced flow pattern, the combustor pressure index($P^*$) was controlled in the range of $0.7{\sim}1.3$ for each equivalence ratio in the present combustion system, where $P^*$ is defined as the ratio of absolute pressure to atmospheric one. Relationship between local reaction intensity and pressure index have been investigated by simultaneous $CH^*$, $C^*_2$ and $OH^*$ intensity measurements. It could be observed that flame length became longer with decreasing $P^*$ from $CH^*$ chemiluminescence intensity of axial direction. The mean value of $C^*_2$ and $CH^*$ chemiluminescence intensities, which indicates reaction intensity in the $CH_4$/air flames, decreased with decreasing pressure index for ${\Phi}{\leq}1$, but increased with decreasing pressure index for ${\Phi}$>1. $C^*_2/CH^*$ intensity ratio, which can be a good marker to demonstrate local equivalence ratio, was almost same for ${\Phi}{\leq}1$ regardless of pressure index change, while they showed high level for lower pressure index for ${\Phi}$>1 conditions.

  • Objectives: The objective of this study was to assess coronal discoloration induced by the following intracanal medicaments: calcium hydroxide (CH), a mixture of CH paste and chlorhexidine gel (CH/CHX), and triple antibiotic paste (3Mix). Materials and Methods: Seventy extracted single-canal teeth were selected. Access cavities were prepared and each canal was instrumented with a rotary ProTaper system. The specimens were randomly assigned to CH, CH/CHX, and 3Mix paste experimental groups (n = 20 each) or a control group (n = 10). Each experimental group was randomly divided into 2 subgroups (A and B). In subgroup A, medicaments were only applied to the root canals, while in subgroup B, the root canals were completely filled with medicaments and a cotton pellet dipped in medicament was also placed in the pulp chamber. Spectrophotometric readings were obtained from the mid-buccal surface of the tooth crowns immediately after placing the medicaments (T1) and at 1 week (T2), 1 month (T3), and 3 months (T4) after filling. The ${\Delta}E$ was then calculated. Data were analyzed using 2-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), 3-way ANOVA, and the $Scheff{\acute{e}}$ post hoc test. Results: The greatest color change (${\Delta}E$) was observed at 3 months (p < 0.0001) and in 3Mix subgroup B (p = 0.0057). No significant color change occurred in the CH (p = 0.7865) or CH/CHX (p = 0.1367) groups over time, but the 3Mix group showed a significant ${\Delta}E$ (p = 0.0164). Conclusion: Intracanal medicaments may induce tooth discoloration. Use of 3Mix must be short and it must be carefully applied only to the root canals; the access cavity should be thoroughly cleaned afterwards.

  • Lipogenesis is under the concerted action of ChREBP, SREBP-1c and other transcription factors in response to glucose and insulin. The isolated porcine preadipocytes were differentiated into mature adipocytes to investigate the roles and interrelation of these transcription factors in the context of glucose- and insulin-induced lipogenesis in pigs. In ChREBP-silenced adipocytes, glucose-induced lipogenesis decreased by ~70%, however insulin-induced lipogenesis was unaffected. Moreover, insulin had no effect on ChREBP expression of unperturbed adipocytes irrespective of glucose concentration, suggesting ChREBP mediate glucose-induced lipogenesis. Insulin stimulated SREBP-1c expression and when SREBP-1c activation was blocked, and the insulin-induced lipogenesis decreased by ~55%, suggesting SREBP-1c is a key transcription factor mediating insulin-induced lipogenesis. $LXR{\alpha}$ activation promoted lipogenesis and lipogenic genes expression. In ChREBP-silenced or SREBP-1c activation blocked adipocytes, $LXR{\alpha}$ activation facilitated lipogenesis and SREBP-1c expression, but had no effect on ChREBP expression. Therefore, $LXR{\alpha}$ might mediate lipogenesis via SREBP-1c rather than ChREBP. When ChREBP expression was silenced and SREBP-1c activation blocked simultaneously, glucose and insulin were still able to stimulated lipogenesis and lipogenic genes expression, and $LXR{\alpha}$ activation enhanced these effects, suggesting $LXR{\alpha}$ mediated directly glucose- and insulin-induced lipogenesis. In summary, glucose and insulin stimulated lipogenesis through both dissimilar and identical regulation pathway in porcine adipocytes.

  • According to Indoor Air Quality(IAQ) management law for multi-use buildings, SEEONE CO., Ltd. made pilot and tested it to remove minute particle, odor, VOCs, etc. within the standards of IAQ. This pilot made by SEEONE CO., Ltd. is vortex scrubber washing electrolyzed water. As 30 minutes test result in multi-use building indoor place, minute particle(the smoke of a cigarette) was reduced $920{\mu}g/m^3{\rightarrow}112{\mu}g/m^3$, gaseous contaminants was reduced Formaldehyde (HCHO) 20ppm$\rightarrow$4ppm, Ammonia($NH_3$) 50ppm$\rightarrow$1ppm, Trimethylamine ($(CH_3CH_2)_3N$) 15ppm$\rightarrow$trace, Methylethylketone($CH_3COC_2H_5$) 25ppm$\rightarrow$trace, Acetic acid ($CH_3COOH$) 20ppm$\rightarrow$trace, Acetaldehyde($CH_3CHO$) 15ppm$\rightarrow$2ppm and Acetone($CH_3COCH_3$) 50ppm$\rightarrow$N.D. The pilot test result of the air filter using electroyzed water in vortex scrubber showed high removal efficiency. Because purified air maintain indoor humidity of approximately 40~60%, so users can feel pleasant. In E.coli, S.aureus sterilization test and CODcr, turbidity treatment test by electrolysis, germs was sterilized over 99.99% and CODcr and turbidity was decreased gradually. So water used for washing can be reused by electrolysis.

  • Recently, in order to meet the stricter emission regulations, the proportion of after-treatments for vehicles and vessels has been increasing gradually. The objective of this study is to investigate the improvement of $CH_4$ reduction ability of natural gas oxidation catalyst (NGOC), which reduces toxic gases emitted from CNG buses. Thirteen NGOCs were prepared, and the conversion performance of noxious gases according to the type of supports, the loading amount of noble metal, and surfactant and aging were determined. Support Zeolite supported on No. 3 $NGOC(1Pt-1Pd-3MgO-3CeO_2/(46TiO_2+23Al_2O_3+23Zeolite)$ is an anionic alkali metal/earth metal component that improved the oxidation reactivity between CO and NO and noble metal dispersion, and thus enhanced the $CH_4$ reduction ability. As the loading amount of Pd, a noble metal with a high selectivity to $CH_4$, was increased, the number of reaction sites was increased and the ability to reduce $CH_4$ was improved. No. 11 $NGOC(1Pt-1Pd-3MgO-3CeO_2/(Z20+Al80)$(pH=8.5), to which nitrate surfactant had been added, exhibited well dispersed catalyst particles with no agglomeration and improved the $CH_4$ reduction ability by 5-15%. The $NGOC(2Pt-2Pd-3Cr-3MgO/90Al_2O_3)$(48h aging), which was mildly thermal aged for 48h, increased the $CH_4$ reduction ability to about 10% or less as compared with No. 12 NGOC(Fresh).

  • Emissions of nitrous oxide (N$_2$O) and methane (CH$_4$) from poultry enteric fermentation were investigated using a respiration chamber. Birds were placed in a respiration chamber for certain intervals during their growing period or for the whole life cycle. The accumulated gas inside the chamber was sampled and analyzed for N$_2$O and CH$_4$ production. A curve for gas production during a life cycle was fitted. The calculated area under the curve estimated the emission factor of poultry enteric fermentation on a life cycle basis (mg bird$^{-1}$ life cycle$^{-1}$). This method can be used to estimate CH$_4$ or N$_2$O emissions from different types of avian species taking into account factors such as diet, season or thermal effects. The CH$_4$/N$_2$O emission factors estimated for commercial broiler chickens, Taiwan country chickens and White Roman Geese were 15.87/0.03, 84.8/16.4 and 1,500/49 (mg bird$^{-1}$ life cycle$^{-1}$), respectively, while the calculated CH$_4$/N$_2$O emission from enteric fermentations were 3.03/0.006, 14.73/2.84 and 9.5/0.31 (Mg year$^{-1}$), respectively in Taiwan in the year of 2000. The described method is applicable to most poultry species and the reported emission factors were applicable to meat type poultry only.

  • Ferrocenyl chalcones (Fc-C(O)CH=CH-Ar: Fc-Ar) with mono- and di-1-naphthalenyl moieties (Fc-1Naph and Fc-d1Naph) were prepared and spectroscopically characterized. The enone bridge was in the s-cis conformation and the $\pi$-electrons on the C=C bond were further delocalized on the bridge. The naphthalenyl moiety deviates greatly from the enone-Cp plane by $26.9(1)^{\circ}$. Cyclic voltammetry measurements for Fc-1Naph exhibit one reversible cycle for the redox of the ferrocenyl moiety at a lower potential, and one irreversible oxidation peak at the higher potential region. For Fc-d1Naph, the cyclic voltammogram is more featureless. Fluorescence properties for both compounds are active in polar solvents with $\lambda_{em}$ = 500 nm (EtOH) and $\lambda_{em}$ = 512 nm (MeOH) for Fc-1Naph and $\lambda_{em}$ = 496 nm (EtOH) and $\lambda_{em}$ = 508 nm (MeOH) for Fc-d1Naph. The intensity of Fc-d1Naph is more than twice than that of Fc-1Naph. The fluorescence properties for both compounds are inactive in the less polar solvents such as $CH_3CN$, $CH_2Cl_2$ and $CHCl_3$.
