  • Parallel finite element code has been recently developed for the analysis of the incompressible Wavier-Stokes equations using domain decomposition method. Metis and MPI libraries are used for the domain partitioning of an unstructured mesh and the data communication between sub-domains, respectively. For unsteady computation of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, 4-step splitting method is combined with P1P1 finite element formulation. Smagorinsky and dynamic model are implemented for the simulation of turbulent flows. For the validation performance-estimation of the developed parallel code, three-dimensional Laplace equation has been solved. It has been found that the speed-up of 40 has been obtained from the present parallel code fir the bench mark problem. Lastly, the turbulent flows around the MIRA model and Tiburon model have been solved using 32 processors on IBM SMP cluster and unstructured mesh. The computed drag coefficient agrees better with the existing experiment as the mesh resolution of the region increases, where the variation of pressure is severe.

  • As environmental restriction kas continuously become more strict, machining technology has emphasized on development of environment-friendly technology. In cutting technology, it has been well recognized that cutting fluids might have undesirable effects on workers health and working environment. In this study, compressed cold air was used as a replacement for conventional cutting fluids. The cooling effect on cutting tool was analyzed using the finite element method and the computational fluid dynamics. This study focused on the temperature simulation of cutting tool by real flow analysis of cold air. The maximum flow rate and the minimum temperature of compressed cold air are 300ι/min and -30$^{\circ}C$ respectively. To compare the simulation and experimental results, inner temperature of the cutting tool was measured with the thermocouple embedded in the insert. The results show that the analysis of cutting temperature using FEM and CFD is resonable, and the replacement of cutting fluid with cold air is available.

  • Although the globe is the most typical valve to control high pressure drop in piping system, it is very hard to figure out the characteristics of flow field in the globe valve caused by its complex geometry. So there is very few studies to find out flow characteristics of globe valve. In this study, numerical analysis for flow field in the globe valve is carried out using the Fluent code which is commercial CFD program. Pressure drop through the globe valve is also measured to verify the results come from numerical analysis. Comparing experiment with numerical analysis, two results are very close to each other. Also finite element method is employed to evaluate the safety of globe valve using the results coming from the flow analysis to make the boundary conditions for FEM analysis. Maximum stress appears on the inlet channel of valve where inlet flow runs against. Because the maximum stress between 11.7 MPa to 3.6 MPa is within 3.4% of yield stress. the structural safety of valve is considered to be very sound

  • The three-dimensional unsteady compressible Euler equation solver with ALE, CFD code, PAM-FLOW based on FEM method has been applied to analyze the flow field around the high speed train which is entering into a channel. From the present study, the pressure and flow transients were calculated and analyzed. The generation of compression wave was observed ahead of train and the high pressure in the gap between the train and the tunnel was also found due to the blockage effects. It was found that abrupt fluctuation in pressure exists in the region from train nose to shoulder of train corresponding to 10% of total length of train during tunnel entry. Computed time history of aerodynamic forces of train during tunnel entry show that drag coefficient rapidly rises and saturates at about non-dimensional time 0.31. The total increase of drag coefficient before and after tunnel entry is about 1.1%. Transient profile of lift force shows similar pattern to drag coefficient except abrupt drop after saturation and lift force in the tunnel increases 0.08% more than that before tunnel entry.

  • Taipei 101 Tower, which has 101 stories with height of 508 m, is located in Taipei where typhoons and earthquakes commonly occur. It is currently the second tallest building in the world. Therefore, the dynamic performance of the super-tall building under strong wind actions requires particular attentions. In this study, Large Eddy Simulation (LES) integrated with a new inflow turbulence generator and a new sub-grid scale (SGS) model was conducted to simulate the wind loads on the super-tall building. Three-dimensional finite element model of Taipei 101 Tower was established and used to evaluate the wind-induced responses of the high-rise structure based on the simulated wind forces. The numerical results were found to be consistent with those measured from a vibration monitoring system installed in the building. Furthermore, the equivalent static wind loads on the building, which were computed by the time-domain and frequency-domain analysis, respectively, were in satisfactory agreement with available wind tunnel testing results. It has been demonstrated through the validation studies that the numerical framework presented in this paper, including the recommended SGS model, the inflow turbulence generation technique and associated numerical treatments, is a useful tool for evaluation of the wind loads and wind-induced responses of tall buildings.

  • The work presented in this paper concerns the aerodynamic characteristics and compression wave generated in a tunnel when a high speed train enters it. A large number of solutions have been proposed to reduce the amplitude of the pressure gradient in tunnels and some of the most efficient solutions consist of (a) addition ofa blind hood, (b) addition of inclined part at the entrance, and (c) holes in the ceiling of the tunnel. These are numerically studied by using the three-dimensional unsteady compressible Euler equation solver with ALE, CFD code, based on FEM method. Computational results showed that the smaller inclined angle leads to the lower pressure gradient of compression wave front. This study indicated that the most efficient slant angle is in the range from $30^{\circ}$ to $50^{\circ}$. The maximum pressure gradient is reduced by $26.81\%$ for the inclined angle of $30^{\circ}$ as compared to vertical entry. Results also showed that maximum pressure gradient can be reduced by $15.94\%$ in blind hood entry as compared to $30^{\circ}$ inclined tunnel entry. Furthermore, the present analysis showed that inclined slant angle has little effect on aerodynamic drag. Comparison of the pressure gradient between the inclined tunnel hood and the vertical entry with air vent holes indicated that the optimum inclined tunnel hood is much more effective way in reducing pressure gradient and increasing the pressure rise time.

  • Wind-induced vibration is a phenomenon that a struture is oscillated due to wind force such as buffeting, vortex shedding wake and etc., which is one of important characteristics to be considered for design in case that stack has significant slenderness ratio or low natural frequency. International design standards of stack define several criteria for evaluating the suitability of stack design, which describe the required design considerations for each range of design parameters and provide the instruction to verify the stack design against wind-induced vibration simply. However, there is a limitation that they cannot provide quantitative information in case code requirement cannot be satisfied due to constraints of plant space or economical design. In order to overcome the limiation of code, integrated numerical analysis of computational fluid dynamics, harmonic analysis and finite element analysis were proposed to investigate wind-induced vibration for multiple stacks in actual plant. Simulated results of mutual wake interference effect between adjacent stacks were evaluated and compared to the criteria in international standards.

  • Due to a roots type medium vacuum pump is operated in condition of $1{\sim}10^{-3}$ torr vacuum, it could be applied for production and process of industrial parts, such as precise processing, vaporization, enrichment, separation, casting, metaling, welding, transportation. Therefore, the demand of this pump is increasing nowadays in our industrial markets of semiconductor, electric, electronic, automobile, material, environmental and transporting industries. However, the pumps are almost imported, because the domestic pumps are inferior in fields of vacuum range as under $10^{-1}$torr, relevant techniques(design, fabrication, casting, test, etc.) to the imported ones. In this study, essential parts of the development pump are designed with using of CFD and 3D decodes, FEM for analysing strength and deformation, generated heat, vibration and noise control, and are casted with using of mechanochemistry techniques for decreasing of weights, increasing of heat resistances and abrasion durability of materials for pump caing and impellers especially. Besides, in order to achieve ultimate vacuum around $10^{-3}$torr, this pump is composed of 6 stages, among which 1st stage is operated separately from remained stages. Additionally, a test rig for prototype pumps(300$m^3/h$ and 2,500$m^3/h$) is designed and procured as to apply for multi-staged rootz type vacuum pump, with modification of the test method recommended by KS B 6314 "Positive-displacement oil-sealed rotary vacuum pumps".

  • In this study, the relationship between flow characteristics and projection distance, depending on the shape was examined. A numerical investigation technique for fluid analysis of a foam monitor was developed for the prediction, comparison and validation of the actual injection performance. The foam monitor changes the flow pattern of fluid flow according to the shape, The fluid losses were calculated from the numerical investigation affecting the projection distance. The basic form of foam monitor was used as a designed shape in N. The modified model used the length increase model of the flow path, and straight line of the model. The inlet pressure was 6.5bar. The results showed that the length increase model of the flow path and straight line of the model in the nozzle projection distance had improved. The results comparing the error rates projection performance were well matched to the 7.43% obtained from the validity test of the analysis method.
