This study was conducted to investigate the effect of delayed controlled atmosphere (CA) storage on fruit quality and the incidence of storage disorders during CA storage of 'Fuji' apples (Malus x domestica Borkh.). In the first year of experiment, 'Fuji' apples showed 40% of watercore disorder at the commercial harvest time (Oct. 22). Twenty days delayed CA storage caused to develop the incidence of flesh browning while 30 days delayed CA storage did not. In the second year of experiment, watercore was increased with delaying harvest time. As the estabilishment of delayed CA storage was delayed, the incidence of flesh browning increased at 10 to 30 days delayed CA storage but 40 days delayed CA storage did not have any flesh browning incidence. Respiration rate increased with extending the storage duration. Delayed CA storage reduced respiration rate but was not different compared to the rapid CA. Ethylene production rate was lower in delayed CA storage than in cold storage but higher in delayed CA storage, compared to rapid CA storage. Titratable acidity was lower in delayed CA storage as CA storage progressed. Firmness was not different between rapid CA storage and delayed CA storage after 8 months of CA storage. Therefore, the results indicate that delayed CA storage should be a promising approach to reduce the risk development of flesh browning and watercore during CA storage of 'Fuji' apples.
This experiment was conducted to measure the physiological qualities and the chemical compositions of garlic bulb (Allium sativum L) stored in air and controlled atmosphere at 0$\^{C}$ for 4months. There were no significant differences in physiological qualities such as soluble solid, dry weight and firmness by O$_2$ and CO$_2$ concentrations during 4 months of storage. The surface color of garlic cloves changed toward more dark direction in Hunter color surface with storage. CA storage inhibited the sprout growth by 50% and had no significant difference in root growth. Garlic stored in CA showed lower level of pungency, especially CA of low oxygen concentration (1%) showed the lowest level of pyruvate. Garlic stored in high CO$_2$ concentration(20%) showed the lowest level of fructan concentrations and the highest free sugar concentrations.
This study aimed to evaluate the fruit quality characteristics and incidence of flesh browning in response to air storage at $0{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ a fter controlled atmosphere s torage (CA condition: $O_2$$2.5{\pm}0.5$%, $CO_2$$1.5{\pm}0.5$%) at $0{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ in 'Fuji' apples (Malus domestica Borkh.). The storage system was performed as followed: air storage for one month, CA storage 4 months + air storage 3 months ( CA 4M + A ir 3M), CA storage 5 m onths + air storage 2 months ( CA 5M + Air 2M) a nd C A storage 6 m onths + air storage 1months (CA 6M + Air 1M), while the control fruits were stored at CA storage for 8 months right after harvest. The incidence of flesh browning ranged from 17.1% to 30.2% during CA storage but not detected under the treatments of CA 4M + Air 3M and CA 5M + Air 2M. The respiration rate was not affected by storage treatments for 6M while the respiration rate was lower in the treatments of CA 4M + Air 3M and CA 5M + Air 2M than the other storage treatments after 7 months. Ethylene production and internal ethylene concentration were lowest in rapid CA storage and increased with a decreasing CA storage duration. Therefore, the results indicate that CA 5M + Air 2M storage treatment should be recommended to maintain the fruit quality and reduce the risk development of flesh browning rather than typical CA storage in 'Fuji' apples.
This research was conducted to find out whether controlled atmosphere(CA) can maintain Satsuma Mandarin fruit fresh longer compared to cold storage. Fruit harvested in Nov. 1998 at Jeju Province were stored in three different CA condition including cold storage. The CA treatments consisted of combinations of 3%, 5% and 10.9% $CO_2$ with 1% and 3-3.9% $O_2$, respectively. Weight and firmness were maintained higher in static CA chambers than in the cold storage. Soluble solid content in fruit of cold storage increased until 2 months of storage and thereafter sharply decreased, whereas that of CA-stored fruit increased slowly throughout the storage period of 120 days. Citric acid decreased obviously in all the treatments with a partially longer retention in CA chambers during storage. Sensory evaluation clearly showed that CA could extend market period of Satsuma Mandarin fruit.
The study was performed to investigate the effects of delayed gamma-irradiation and CA storage on the keeping quality of chestnuts. Chestnuts peviously stored for 3 months at 0$^{\circ}C$ were irradiated at 0 to 0.25 kGy of Co$\^$60/ gamma rays and then stored for 6 months under CA conditions of 3% O$_2$ and 5% CO$_2$ or air at 0$^{\circ}C$. Delayed gamma-irradiation completely inhibited the sprouting of chestnuts, and tore reduced the rotting rate by the combination with CA storage. The weight loss was reduced by delayed gamma-irradiation and CA storage. Hunter L and b values of flesh surface of the chestnuts stored under CA were higher than those of samples stored under air regardless of gamma irradiation. Vitamin C, total sugar and reducing sugar contents decreased immediately after irradiation Vitamin C and reducing sugar contents after 6 months of storage were lower in the samples kept under CA than in those under air. Results indicated that delayed gamma-irradiation after harvest and subsequent CA storage showed inhibitory effects against the development of saluting and rotting and the loss of weights and surface flesh color changes in chestnuts.
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of CA(4% $O_2$ and 7.5% $CO_2$) storage on the quality characteristics and chilling injury in 'Nanko' prunus mume fruits at 1, 5, and $9^{\circ}C$. CA storage reduced production of $CO_2$ and $C_2H_4$ significantly. Hue values of fruit skin were significantly higher in fruits stored at $1^{\circ}C$ and $5^{\circ}C$ than $9^{\circ}C$. Weight loss was much lower in fruits stored under CA storage. Soluble solids content (SSC) titratable acids (TA), and firmness were maintained and electrolyte leakage was lower in fruits stored under CA storage. Ratios of chilling injury and decay were increased faster at $5^{\circ}C$ and $9^{\circ}C$ than $1^{\circ}C$. The chilling injury was suppressed in fruits of CA storage compared with control fruits during cold storage. These results indicate that CA storage at $1^{\circ}C$ of prunus mume fruits extended the storage life up to 30 days without quality deterioration. effectively.
This study was conducted to clarify the degradation pattern, safety evaluation and penetration ratio of benomyl and bitertanol to apple used as postharvest fungicides during CA(controlled atmosphere) and cold storage. In CA storage, the degradation of benomyl and bitertanol in stored apple was slow at the early stage, while that in cold storage was, on the contrary, faster at the early stage. The initial concentrations of benomyl and bitertanol in apples applied at the standard application concentrations were 2.24 and 1.54mg/kg, respectively, and their residual amounts were below the maximum residue limits, 1mg/kg at 135 and 96 days in CA storage, 115 and 70 days in cold storage, respectively. The half-lives of benomyl and bitertanol in stored apples were 124 and 130 days in CA storage, 101 and 111 days in the cold storage, respectively, indicating that the degradation was faster in cold storage than in CA storage. The residual amount of benomyl and bitertanol in stored apples was retained more in peels than in pulps of apples.
A transpiration model was selected and tested experimentally to predict transpiration into of Fuji apple stored in a normal air and controlled atmospheres (l∼3% O$_2$+ l∼3% CO$_2$) at 0$\^{C}$ and 98% RH for 6weeks. CA storage decreased the respiration rate of Fuji apple by 50% when compared with normal air storage. The transpiration rates of apple showed 50∼70% higher in normal air storage than those in CA storage and were decreased by increasing CO$_2$concentration under same concentration of O$_2$. The transpiration rates estimated by the selected model were in good agreement with experimental data for Fuji apples under controlled atmosphere conditions and normal air. When the respiratory heat generation rate u of Fuji apple increased with storage conditions, the evaporating surface temperature and transpiration rate also increased. But since some portion of respiratory heat was used as latent heat in the evaporating surface, the change of u value had a little effect on the determination of the evaporation temperature and the transpiration rate.
'Hongro' and 'Gamhong' apples grown at the Gochang-si in the southern part of Korea were harvested on September in 2002 for storage study. Each cultivar was divided into two groups of maturity based on the harvested date. Immature fruits were harvested 10 days early compared to fruits having proper maturity. This study was conducted to evaluate quality the change of 'Hongro' and 'Gamhong' apples newly bred by different storage methods with PE film package and CA conditions. A typical climacteric respiration pattern was observed in new variety 'Hongro' and 'Gamhong' apples stored at room temperature. The results indicated that fresh quality of the stored fruits in CA condition was better than that in other treatments during storage. Qualities of apples were least changed at CA storage of 3% $CO_2$ and 1% $O_2$. CA storage was effective in maintaining the freshness of 'Hongro' and 'Gamhong' for 16 weeks.
Changes in fruit quality and some components of Unshiu orange(Citrus Unshiu Marc. Hayashi) stored at $2^{\circ}C$ in air or a controlled atmosphere(CA, $O_2$ 10%, $CO_2$ 2%) for 111 days were studied. The incidence of rot fruits was higher in air(12.7%) than in CA condition(3.9%). The appearance of the fruits was better in CA condition than in air. There was no significant difference in the weight loss of whole fruits between both storage conditions. The ratio of the flesh weight In whole fruits under CA condition was slightly lower than those in air until 62 days of storage, while it showed no rapid decrease in the later period of storage. Under both storage conditions, the Brix in the flesh increased in the early Period of storage and then decreased slowly, while the free acid contents decreased gradually during storage. In comparison with the fruits stored in air, those under CA condition showed lower total sugar content. The sugar in the flesh of the fruits is composed of sucrose, fructose and glucose. The content of total sugar as well as each sugar showed no distinct difference under both storage conditions. In the flesh of the fruits, citric acid comprised about 90% of the organic acid and malic acid the second abundant acid. During storage, the contents of citric, malic and oxalic acid decreased. Significant difference in the decreasing rate of total organic acid between both stnrage conditions was not found. From the above results, it might be considered that CA could be applied lot the storage of Unshiu orange grown on Cheju
