  • The conformational study of glycerol has been carried out using the M06-2X/cc-pVTZ level of theory in the gas phase and the SMD M06-2X/cc-pVTZ level of theory in water in order to understand its conformational preferences and solvation effects. Most of the preferred conformers of glycerol have two $C_5$ hydrogen bonds in the gas phase, as found by the analysis of calorimetric data. It has been known that the solvation drove the hydrogen bonds of glycerol to be weaker and its potential surface to be fatter and that glycerol exists as an ensemble of many feasible local minima in water. The calculated populations of glycerol in the gas phase and in water are consistent with the observed values, which are better than the previously calculated ones at the G2(MP2), CBS-QB3, and SM5.42 HF/6-31G(d) levels of theory.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand what two models of SOLO taxonomy and van Hiele theory suggest and find out what relation there is between the category system of the SOLO taxonomy and the thinking level of the van Hiele theory. The van Hiele theory describes in line of ranking level so that it may increase the teaching effects by putting together a class, which takes into consideration the students thoughts. The SOLO taxonomy focused on the response mode of the students rather than the thinking level or the developmental stage of them to pursuit the method that can describe the students understanding in depth quality-wise. Although the SOLO taxonomy and the van Hiele model seem to have different form and character from outside in terms of their goals, a closer examination reveals that the two stances have much in common and that the models are complementary. Although the van Hiele placed more focus on the thoughts, because the conclusion was based on the students responses, the van Hiele theory can be interpreted within the structure identified in the SOLO model. In this study, we have tried to understand how the response structure form the SOLO taxonomy and the thinking level of the van Hiele theory are related, based on the studies of Pegg and Davery1998). If you briefly look at them, there are following corresponding relation between the SOLO taxonomy and the van Hiele theory. a) The relational level(R) in iconic moe is van Hiele level 1. b) The multisturctural level(M$_2$) in the second cycle of concrete-symbolic mode is van Hiel level 2. c) The relation level(R$_2$) in the second cycle of concrete-symbolic mode is van Hiele level 3. d) The unistructural level(U$_2$) in the second cycle of formal mode is van Hiele level 4. e) The postformal mode is van Hiele levle 5. Though it would be difficult to conclude that these correspondences were perfectly done, if you look at their relation, you can see that the learning process of the students were not carried out uniformly. Therefore, by studying the students response structure, using the SOLO taxonomy, and identifying the learning cycle and understand the geometrical concept more in depth.

  • The (Sr$_{1-x}$ .Ca$_{x}$)TiO$_{3}$(0.05.leq.x.leq.0.2) ceramics were fabricated to form semiconducting ceramics by sintering at about 1350[.deg. C] in a reducing atmosphere (N$_{2}$ gas). After being fired in a reducing atmosphere, metal oxides, CuO, was painted on the both surface of the specimens to diffuse to the grain boundary. They were annealed at 1100[.deg. C] for 2 hours. The 2nd phase formed by thermal diffusing from the surface lead to a very high apparent dielectric constant. The results of the capacitance-valtage measurements indicated that the grain boundary was composed of the continuous insulating layers. The capacitance is almost unchanged below about 20[V], but decreased slowly over 20[V]. The conduction mechanism of the specimens observed in the temperature range of 25~125[.deg. C], and is divided into three regions having different mechanism as the current increased: the region I below 200[V/cm] shows the ohmic conduction. The region II between 200[V/cm] and 2000[V/cm] can be explained by the Poole-Frenkel emission theory, and the region III above 2000[V/cm] is dominated by the tunneling effect.ct.

  • The partition function for liquid water is developed according to the transient state theory of significant liquid structure proposed by Pak, Ahn and Chang. This theory assumes that the molecules may possess solid-like, transient and gas-like degrees of freedom in liquid state. Although liquid water has several special properties, for example, minimum molar volume at 4^{\circ}C$, the general theory of liquid can be applied successfully. The theoretically calculated values for thermodynamic properties at the liquid temperature range and for the critical properties are in good agreement with the observed values.

  • In this paper, an attempt is made to analyze the impulsive stress directly underneath the concentrated impact point for a supported square plate by using the three-dimensional dynamic theory of elasticity and the potential theory of displacement (stress function) on the supposition that the load, F$_{*}$0 sin .omega.t, acted on the central part of it. The results obtained from this study are as follows: 1. The impulsive stress cannot be analyzed directly underneath the acting point of concenrated impact load in privious theories, but can be analyzed by using the three-dimensional dynamic theory of elasticity and the potential theory of displacement. 2. Theorically, with increasing the pulse width of applied load, it was possible to clarify that the amount of stress in the point of concentrated impact load was increased and that of stress per unit impulse was decreased. 3. The numerical inversion of laplace transformation by the use of the F.F.T algorithm contributes the reduction of C.P.U time and the improvement of the accuracy or results. 4. In this paper recommended, it is found that the approximate equation of impact load function P (.tau.) = A.tau. exp (-B.tau.), and P (.tau.) =0.85A exp (-B.tau.) sinC.tau. could actually apply to all impact problem. In compared with the experimental results, the propriety of the analytical method is reasonable.

  • The ration of payload to weight of industrial robot amounts form 1:10 to 1:30. Compared with man who have a ration of 3:1, it is very low. One of the goals for the next generation of robots will be a ration. This might be possible only by developing lightweight robots. When two-link flexible arm is rotated about an joint axis, transverse vibration may occur. In this paper, vibration dynamics of flexible arm is modeled by using Bernoulli-Euler beam theory and Lagrange equation. Using the fact that matrix $\dot{D}-2C$ is skew symmetric, new controllers which have a simplified structure with less computational burden is proposed by using Lyapunov stability theory. We propose deterministic and adaptive control laws for two link flexible arm, and the validity of the proposed control scheme is shown in computer simulation for two-link flexible arm.

  • Bridge hanger vibrations have been reported under icy conditions. In this paper, the results from a series of static and dynamic wind tunnel tests on a circular cylinder representing a bridge hanger with simulated thin ice accretions are presented. The experiments focus on ice accretions produced for wind perpendicular to the cylinder at velocities below 30 m/s and for temperatures between $-5^{\circ}C$ and $-1^{\circ}C$. Aerodynamic drag, lift and moment coefficients are obtained from the static tests, whilst mean and fluctuating responses are obtained from the dynamic tests. The influence of varying surface roughness is also examined. The static force coefficients are used to predict parameter regions where aerodynamic instability of the iced bridge hanger might be expected to occur, through use of an adapted theoretical 3-DOF quasi-steady galloping instability model, which accounts for sectional axial rotation. A comparison between the 3-DOF model and the instabilities found through two degree-of-freedom (2-DOF) dynamic tests is presented. It is shown that, although there is good agreement between the instabilities found through use of the quasi-steady theory and the dynamic tests, discrepancies exist-indicating the possible inability of quasi-steady theory to fully predict these vibrational instabilities.
