We have investigated traits of clad metals in hot-rolled clad steel plates, sensitization and mechanical properties of STS 316 steel plate and carbon steel(A516). Clad steel plates were butt-weld by SAW+SMAW, and with the time of heat treatment as the variable, heat treatment was conducted at $625^{\circ}C$, for 80, 160, 320, 640, 1280 minutes. As a way to evaluate it, sectioned weldments and external surfaces were investigated to reveal the degree of sensitization by mechanical property, etching and those of EPR test, results were compared with it. In short, the purpose of this study is suggesting some considerations in developing on-site techniques to evaluate the sensitization of stainless steels.
Recently in the welding field, the establishment of unmanned and automated systems are rapidly developing. Accurate interpretation of the welding phenomenon is applied a number of monitoring systems. In this paper, butt welding (6t) type I using Plasma-MIG welding was carried out. And we evaluated characteristics of the Al-5083 aluminium alloy in Plasma-MIG hybrid welding. Process variables including the plasma current, MIG voltage, wire feeding rate and the welding speed were used. Butt welding was conducted 1 pass. Argon gas was used as the protective gas that results from the experiment were able to achieve full penetration. In addition to monitoring the welding process occurring during MIG welding current, welding votage and Plasma current, voltage were collected in real time, the photodiode and CCD cameras observing the phenomenon that the welding is in progress were measured using a quantity of light.

PWSCC(Primary Stress Corrosion Cracking) in Alloy 82/182 butt welds is the problem affecting safety and integrity of nuclear power plant. PWSCC can be occurred in the area that is at high magnitude of tensile residual stress, such as Alloy 82/182 dissimilar metal welds in PZR(pressurizer) nozzles. There have been a number of incidents recently at the dissimilar metal welds in overseas nuclear power plants. Overlay weld is the one of the effective methods to decrease tensile residual stress of inside surface, which will result in preventing PWSCC. In this paper, overlay weld conditions on the purpose of preventing PWSCC was explained and the benefit of the overlay weld was confirmed performing finite element analysis.

A residual stress generated in the steel structure is broadly categorized into initial residual stress during manufacturing steel material, welding residual stress caused by welding, and heat treatment residual stress by heat treatment. Initial residual stresses induced during the manufacturing process is combined with welding residual stress or heat treatment residual stress, and remained as a final residual stress. Because such final residual stress affects the safety and strength of the structure, it is of utmost importance to measure or predict the magnitude of residual stress, and to apply this point on the design of the structure. In this study, the initial residual stress of steel structures having thicknesses of 25 mm and 70 mm during manufacturing was measured in order to investigate initial residual stress (hereinafter, referred to as initial stress). In addition, thermal elastic plastic FEM analysis was performed with this initial condition, and the effect of initial stress on the welding residual stress was investigated. Further, the reliability of the FE analysis result, considering the initial stress and welding residual stress for the steel structures having two thicknesses, was validated by comparing it with the measured results. In the vicinity of the weld joint, the initial stress is released and finally controlled by the weld residual stress. On the other hand, the farther away from the weld joint, the greater the influence of the initial stress. The range in which the initial stress affects the weld residual stress was not changed by the initial stress. However, in the region where the initial stress occurs in the compressive stress, the magnitude of the weld residual compressive stress varies with the compression or tension of the initial stress. The effect of initial stress on the maximum compression residual stress was far larger when initial stress was considered in case of a thickness of 25 mm with a value of 180 MPa, while in case of thickness at 70 mm, it was 200 MPa. The increase in compressive residual stress is almost the same as the initial stress. However, if initial stress was tensile, there was no significant change in the maximum compression residual stress.
In steel moment frames constructed of H-shapes, strong-axis moment connections should be used for maximum structural efficiency if possible. And most of cyclic seismic testing, domestic and international, has been conducted for strong-axis moment connections and cyclic test data for weak-axis connections is quite limited. However, when perpendicular moment frames meet, weak-axis moment connections are also needed at the intersecting locations. Especially, both strong- and weak-axis moment connections have been frequently used in domestic practice. In this study, cyclic seismic performance of RBS (reduced beam section) weak-axis welded moment connections was experimentally investigated. Test specimens, designed according to the procedure proposed by Gilton and Uang (2002), performed well and developed an excellent plastic rotation capacity of 0.03 rad or higher, although a simplified sizing procedure for attaching the beam web to the shear plate in the form of C-shaped fillet weld was used. The test results of this study showed that the sharp corner of C-shaped fillet weld tends to be the origin of crack propagation due to stress concentration there and needs to be trimmed for the better weld shape. Different from strong-axis moment connections, due to the presence of weld access hole, a kind of CJP butt joint is formed between the beam flange and the horizontal continuity plate in weak-axis moment connections. When weld access hole is large, this butt joint can experience cyclic local buckling and subsequent low cycle fatigue fracture as observed in this testing program. Thus the size of web access hole at the butt joint should be minimized if possible. The recommended seismic detailing such as stickout, trimming, and thicker continuity plate for construction tolerance should be followed for design and fabrication of weak-axis welded moment connections.

Generally, butt welds with plate thickness $30{\sim}40mm$ are welded with groove angle $40^{\circ},\;60^{\circ},\;70^{\circ}$, etc. In the detection of internal weld defects, oblique testing with single probe has been mainly used. But, recently, in acccordance with enlargement of welded structure, thick plate with 100-200mm are frequently required. Thus I-groove welding method was lately developed and often used. In this case, most frequently generated defects are the lack of weld penetration and incomplete fusion between base metal and welding material. If we would detect by oblique testing with single probe, detecting flaw is occassionally impossible or very underestimated. In this study, the limit for applying tandem method was studied in dise and band type flaws. The estimation of flaw size could be within 10% error compared to real flaws.
During welding of Ni based superalloy, hot cracking was usually happen in the fusion zone of a weld. In this study, the laser weldability of Inconel 713C alloy for the turbocharger wastegate valve (WGV) was evaluated with various welding conditions, such as laser power, welding speed, shielding gas. Welding conditions were optimized by bead-on-plate (BOP) and butt joint welding. For the evaluation of laser weldability, bead shapes and weld microstructures were investigated and tensile test was conducted. The fracture surfaces were investigated for the understanding the cause of the fracture.
Laser beam welding is more advantageous compared to conventional methods. Titanium/Aluminium dissimilar alloy thin sheet metals are difficult to weld due to large difference in melting point. The performance of the weldment depends upon interlayer formation and distribution of intermetallics. During welding, aluminium gets lost at the temperature below the melting point of titanium. Therefore, it is needed to improve a new metal joining techniques between these two alloys. The present work is carried for welding TI6AL4V and AA2024 alloy by using Nd:YAG Pulsed laser welding unit. The performance of the butt welded interlayer structures are discussed in detail using hardness test and SEM. Test results reveal that interlayer fracture is caused near aluminium side due to low strength at the weld joint.
5052 aluminum alloy sheets of 2mm thickness were butt welded using a continuous wave Nd:YAG laser with and without Ar shielding gas. Vickers hardness, transverse-weld tensile and bulge tests were carried out to investigate the effect of Ar shielding gas on the mechanical properties and formability of laser welds. Porosity in the weld metals was investigated using an optical microscope. Mechanical properties and formability of 5052 aluminum alloy laser welds were degraded compared to those of base metal. However, those properties were improved due to the reduced size and number of porosity when Ar shielding gas was used.
To investigate impact property characteristics on the low temperature plate weld metal, the two different plates of the same steel grade were welded and evaluated by Mo bearing and no Mo containing welding consumables. The results are summarized as follows; 1) Multi pass welded Mo bearing weldment was not satisfied with the requirement of tensile strength, while no Mo containing one was satisfied with it 2) In the plate butt weldment, the impact property of weld metal was highly affected by both the welding consumable and plate.
