In most cities, travel demand is distributed along long corridors and its destinations tend to concentrate in a central business district. For this kind of many-to-one or one-to-many travel demand pattern, a zonal operation of buses can be an efficient bus operation technique in which a long bus-demand corridor is divided into service zones and each service zone is provided with its own bus route connecting the service zone and single destination separately. This paper develops models of the total transportation costs for a single-zone operation and 2-zonal operation of buses for a long demand corridor with single destination in terms of various cost parameters, demand density, bus operation speeds, and location of the boundary between two service zones. In this study the total transportation cost is assumed to consist of the bus operation cost, passenger waiting cost and passenger travel time cost. It was proved that a zonal operation of buses can be more efficient than a single-zone operation for certain circumstances of the system and an boundary condition between two operation techniques was obtained. Also, several case studies were performed for various values of the cost parameters.
Bus passengers need some time to adapt to the changed bus route or free bus transfer system which is part of the public transportation system restructuring plan. This research is focused on the characteristics of monthly patterns of bus passengers. The period of stabilization of bus passenger demand after the rearrangement of bus route system by a time series were analysed. In order to look into the characteristics of bus passenger demand by month, data on the number of monthly bus passengers of recent five years in metropolitan cities across the nation was collected. Kendall's coefficient of concordance is used to test whether the cities showed concordance with respect to the number of monthly bus passengers during a period of five years. The study collected and performed a time series analysis of data on the number of monthly bus passengers during the past ten years in Daegu metropolitan area which carried out a new bus route plan in February 2006. The number of monthly bus passengers in 2006 was estimated using the time series analysis. The city of Daegu found that after six months the estimated and actual values displayed a similar pattern. This result can be applied to other cities in estimating the passenger demands in the future.

An autonomous demand-responsive bus with mobility-on-demand service is an innovative transport compensating for the disadvantages of an autonomous bus and a demand-responsive bus with mobility-on-demand service. However, less attention has been paid to the quantitative impact assessment of the autonomous demand-responsive bus due to the technological complexity of the autonomous demand-responsive bus. This study simulates autonomous demand-responsive bus trips by reinforcement learning on a microscopic traffic simulation to quantify the impact of the autonomous demand-responsive bus. The Chungju campus of the Korea National University of Transportation is selected as a testbed. Simulation results show that the introduction of the autonomous demand-responsive bus can reduce the wait time of passengers, average control delay, and increase the traffic speed compared to the results with fixed route bus service. This study contributes to the quantitative evaluation of the autonomous demand-responsive bus.

This paper develops a model for dynamic station assignment to optimize the Demand Responsive Transit (DRT) operation. In the process of optimization, we use the bus travel time as a variable for DRT management. In addition, walking time, waiting time, and delay due to detour to take other passengers (detour time) are added as optimization variables and entered for each DRT passenger. Based on a network around Anaheim, California, reserved origins and destinations of passengers are assigned to each demand responsive bus, using K-means clustering. We create a model for selecting the dynamic station and bus route and use Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-III to analyze seven scenarios composed combination of the variables. The result of the study concluded that if the DRT operation is optimized for the DRT management, then the bus travel time and waiting time should be considered in the optimization. Moreover, it was concluded that the bus travel time, walking time, and detour time are required for the passenger.

Purpose: Caring for weak person in society, which increases the population of the elderly and people with disabilities is essential. By increasing along with the increase of the use of passenger facilities for travelers and pedestrian is increasing the demand for convenient and secure facilities for everyone. The emerging importance of the passenger-related facilities, but a representative study of the bus terminal facilities is lacking. Bus terminals are the most popular passenger facility. Thus, the bus terminal can be conveniently used by anyone in everyday life, however, the applied elements considering the use of the transportation Poor are not sufficient. Methods: This study was conducted to evaluate BF certification standards targeting bus terminals across the country to determine the availability of the transportation Poor in bus terminal. Result: As a result of the bus Terminal possibility BF certified it appeared to be very low. Also, items received the lowest rating of each item was evaluated in the informative facilities and items. Bus terminal is a facility used by the unspecified individuals, the proportion of first-time user is high, but there is a lack of consideration for the transportation Poor bus terminals. Implications: In the future, this study can guide the next research on the application of BF certification standards in bus terminal. Further studies can be presented to the improvement of the BF certification indicator in bus terminal.
Bus headway plays an important role not only in determining the passenger waiting time and bus service quality, but also in influencing the bus operation cost and passenger demand. Previous research on headway control has considered only an hourly difference in the distribution of ridership between peak and non-peak hours. However, this approach is too simple to help manage ridership demand fluctuations in a short time scale; thus passengers' waiting cost will be generated when ridership demand exceeds the supply of bus services. Moreover, bus ridership demand varies by station location and traffic situation. To address this concern, we propose a headway control algorithm for minimizing the waiting time cost by using Smart Card data. We also provide proof of the convergence of the algorithm to the desired headway allocation using a set of preconditions of political waiting time guarantees and available fleet constraints. For model verification, the data from the No. 143 bus line in Seoul were used. The results show that the total savings in cost totaled approximately 600,000 won per day when we apply the time-value cost of waiting time. Thus, we can expect that cost savings will be more pronounced when the algorithm is applied to larger systems.
This study analyzes the price elasticities of airline Passenger demand through the 'Stated Preference' technique which uses survey data. Because the domestic airfare has been regulated by the government. it is not easy to derive Price elasticity through the usual regression analysis with aggregate data and thus a special methodology is required for elasticity estimation. Therefore, in this study we estimated the Price elasticities of domestic air passenger demand and the modal share change rates to the alternative modes with logit model and sample enumeration method, by analyzing the survey data on air Passengers' demand behavior about the mode choice between air-rail. air-bus, and air-car. As the results, the estimated price elasticities are in the range of -0.6~-0.9, and rail is mainly chosen as an alternative mode. bus is chosen Partly, and car is barely used.
The first-best pricing rule which achieves economic efficiency is to equate price with marginal cost. Since public transport demand is derived from some other demand, the user cost as well as the producer cost are considered in its pricing. The optimal price is derived from a derivative of the total social cost with respect to demand. In case of the bus, if there is enough capacity for demand increase, the optimal price is determined by the marginal producer cost resulting from bus sped decrease and by the marginal user cost resulting from journey time increase. Both are caused by boarding and fare collecting time of an additional passenger. Because of the budget constraints, the marginal cost pricing cannot be applied in practice. Then price discrimination as the second-best pricing is introduced. The Ramsey pricing, to charge different prices for different demand elasticities, and nonuniform prices such as travelcards can be applied. However, there is practical difficulty in implementing these prices because of great informational requirements, the costs of administration and the ease to users.
In this paper, we implement an algorithm of transit signal priority control that not only maximizes service quality and efficiency of bus, but also minimizes the control delay of passenger cars using UTIS currently being deployed and operated in Seoul national capital area. For this purpose, we propose an algorithm that coordinates the strength of TSP by estimating bus demand. Typically, the higher the strength of TSP is on main street, the bigger the control delay is on the cross street. Motivated by this practical difficulty, we proposes an algorithm that coordinates TSP's strength by checking the degree of saturation of cross street. Also, we verify the possibility of field implementation via simulation analysis using CORSIM RTE based HILS (Hardware In the Loop Simulation). The result shows that travel time of bus improves about 10 percent without increasing control delay of passenger cars by TSP. We expect the result of this research to contribute to increasing the overall transit ridership in this country.
The public transportation in operation or to be planned domestically includes subway, LRT, bimodal tram and bus, which are independently characterized in their passenger capacity and cost. High quality service is generally accompanied by high cost of construction and operation. Thus, ITS, BIS/BMS and BRT system are recently introduced to provide high quality service to the passengers with the cost as low as possible. The bimodal tram is under development to achieve such goals in public transportation. The passenger capacity is approximately expected to be 10,000$\sim$17,000 persons/hour and the construction cost to be 10$\sim$30 million dollars/km. It is possible to construct the infrastructure gradually depending on the demand of transportation in the planned route, which can effectively reduce the initial cost to launch the service. The bimodal tram is developed to provide the advantages of subway and bus to the passengers with respect to the scheduled operation and flexibility of the lines.
