  • Recent economic slump has highlighted the needs for the construction industry to develop strategies to improve productivity and overhaul organization structure. Notably, it is urgent to improve productivity of apartment building construction projects that account for about half of the aggregate revenue of building construction projects in Korea. As construction site management manpower staffing plan has close relation with the productivity of building construction, it is essential to staff construction sites adequately in consideration of site conditions and characteristics. However, construction companies of Korea are still far from developing site management manpower staffing plan in reference to quantitative standards. Therefore, this research aims to analyze site management manpower staffing plan of apartment building construction project by means of density analysis. To be more specific, site organization charts and staffing plans of apartment building construction projects put together by large construction companies in Korea are studied and essential resources and their mobilization time of apartment building construction projects are examined. Conclusions herein will provide basic inputs to subsequent studies of apartment building construction site management manpower staffing standards.

  • The Guangzhou International Finance Centre (IFC) is a landmark building that symbolizes the emerging international strength of Guangzhou, China's third largest city. It is also one of the dual iconic towers along the main axis of Guangzhou Zhujiang New Town. Arup adopted a total engineering approach in embracing sustainability and aiming at high efficiency solutions based on performance-based design principles covering structures, building services, fire engineering, vertical transportation, and façade performance to constitute an efficient and cost-effective overall building design. Through dynamic integration of architectural and engineering principles, Guangzhou IFC represents a pioneering supertall building in China. It adopts a diagrid exoskeleton structural form that is clearly expressed through the building's façade and gives the building its distinctive character. The aerodynamic shape of the building not only presents the aesthetic quality of elegant simplicity, but also reduces the effects of wind, thereby reducing the size and weight of the structure. State-of-the-art advanced engineering methods, such as optimization techniques and nonlinear finite element modelling, were applied in parallel with large-scale experimental programs to achieve an efficient and high-performance design taking into account the constructability and cost-effectiveness for a project of this scale.

  • Automatic building material recognition has been a popular research interest over the past decade because it is useful for construction management and facility management. Currently, the extensively used methods for automatic material recognition are mainly based on 2D images. A terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) with a built-in camera can generate a set of coloured laser scan data that contains not only the visual features of building materials but also other attributes such as material reflectance and surface roughness. With more characteristics provided, laser scan data have the potential to improve the accuracy of building material recognition. Therefore, this research aims to develop a TLS-based building material recognition method by combining machine learning techniques. The developed method uses material reflectance, HSV colour values, and surface roughness as the features for material recognition. A database containing the laser scan data of common building materials was created and used for model training and validation with machine learning techniques. Different machine learning algorithms were compared, and the best algorithm showed an average recognition accuracy of 96.5%, which demonstrated the feasibility of the developed method.

  • Despite the acknowledged benefits by incorporating daylighting in the lighting system of office buildings to enhance energy efficiency and ensure occupants' well-being, a significant gap in understanding the integration of daylighting control system (DCS) with Building Information Modeling (BIM) exists, which can lead to improved energy efficiency and enhanced building design, specifically regarding the impact of daylight on occupant comfort. Previous studies have highlighted the potential of BIM to revolutionize both architectural design and building performance. However, an untapped potential of BIM in facilitating daylighting control in office areas is yet to be explored. The significance of this study lies in prioritizing occupants' well-being and enhancing building performance. This research identifies the feasibility of BIM-enabled DCS through a literature review from three perspectives: BIM-enabled DCS and daylight strategies, BIM-assisted façade system improvement, and user-centric daylight utilization within BIM platforms. As for results, a sensor network diagram illustrating network structure, data flow, and connections between devices of BIM enabled daylight control system for office buildings are established. Additionally, a BIM assisted daylight control strategy diagram is presented to outline user-centric control facilitated by BIM platform. In terms of contribution to the body of knowledge, this research will provide a comprehensive synthesis of existing literature in this domain. Additionally, this research could provide architects, DCS designers, and sustainable building professionals with potential advancements and inspirations to promote energy-efficient and user-centric building design in the future.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of SCM on PM's capabilities and sustainable benefit sharing in leading global companies. To achieve this, statistical analyses were carried out through an empirical questionnaire survey of 426 PMs in SCM companies. The results showed that SCM commitment, vision and goal sharing have positive effects on PM's capabilities in leading global companies, boosting PM capability. Moreover, sustainable benefit sharing was improved along with SCM trust building, vision and goal sharing in global leading companies, supporting the usefulness of these variables. In contrast, SCM information sharing and trust building did not lead to significant acceleration of PM's capabilities, rejecting these variables. These findings indicate that SCM information sharing or trust building does not really help simple members to accelerate PM's capabilities.

  • A Conceptual cost estimate, which is computed in the preliminary step of a project, is important for decision-making by a contractor in terms of the project budget, economic feasibility and validity analysis, and alternative comparisons. Therefore, a high error rate of a prediction model for a conceptual cost estimate can lead to various problems including excessive project expenditures and a delayed break-even point. this study proposed optimal impact factors by configuring quantitative impact factors computable in a preliminary step in various cases(combinations of impact factors). subsequently, the accuracy of different cases was comparatively analyzed by using the cases as input values of a prediction model using regression analysis. when the optimal combination of impact factors proposed in this study and other combination of impact factors were applied to the prediction model, the regression analysis-based prediction model exhibited 0.2-4.7% improvements in accuracy, respectively. the optimal combination of impact factors proposed in this study improved the accuracy of the prediction model of a conceptual cost estimate by removing unnecessary impact factor.
