  • In this paper we present a cleaning robot system for an autonomous mobile robot. Our robot performs goal reaching tasks into unknown indoor environments by using sensor fusion. The robot's operation objective is to clean floor or any other applicable surface and to build a map of the surrounding environment for some further purpose such as finding the shortest path available. Using its cleaning robot system for an autonomous mobile robot can move in various modes and perform dexterous tasks. Performance of the cleaning robot system is better than a fixed base redundant robot in avoiding singularity and obstacle. Sensor fusion using the clean robot improves the performance of the robot with redundant freedom in workspace and Map-Building. In this paper, Map-building of the cleaning robot has been studied using sensor fusion. A sequence of this alternating task execution scheme enables the clean robot to execute various tasks efficiently. The proposed algorithm is experimentally verified and discussed with a cleaning robot, KCCR.

  • Down through the years, human needs and desires have required a robot system to work at hazardous environments instead. Current painting task is costly and laborious, and it exposes workers to significant health and safety risks. Automation system offers potential improvement in this area and is especially well suited to the outer-wall painting tasks in concrete structures. This paper introduces the result of gondola-type building management robot(G-BMR) platform and mechanism for moving/tasking on building outer-wall for the outer-wall painting. Its technical and economic feasibility are conducted, and it is concluded that developing G-BMR is physically and economically feasible in this research. And we discuss about the future of G-BMR and automation in construction field.

  • As residents and building owners demand maintenance that is required to achieve sustainable building performance, efficient building management methods are required. Even though the demand for maintenance systems is increasing, current maintenance work for high-rise buildings mostly uses conventional ropes and gondolas that pose a high risk of accidents and exhibit poor performance and efficiency. Thus, there is an urgent need to develop an automation robot system that can reduce accidents and improve the maintenance efficiency of the conventional high-rise building façade maintenance system. As a preceding work for the development of an automation robot system, this study classified and analyzed the work processes of actual construction sites and proposed basic techniques for the work mechanisms of the robot system by investigating the motions of cleaning workers.

  • Robot-based layout automation has been recently promoted for the purpose of improving productivity and quality. Marking robots have various functional demands to secure marking precision and environmental adaptability. In particular, in order to automate marking work of building structure, correction of the marking line through position recognition of rebars placed is required. Because the rebars must maintain a constant cover thickness from the formwork surface, if the rebars are out of planned position, the rebar or marking line need to be corrected to secure the cover thickness. Thus, the marking robot for structural work needs to have the function for determining the position correction of the rebar or the marking line. In order to judge the correction of marking line, it is required to measure the distance between the planned marking line and the rebar placed. Therefore, this study proposes an algorithm that can measure the distance between the planned line and the rebar, and correct marking line for the automatic operation of the marking robot. The results of this study will be utilized as a core function for unmanned operation of the marking robot and contribute to securing precise marking by reflecting construction errors.

  • Construction automation is yet to be improved since construction site still faces a lot of high risks and difficulties. This research focuses on applying robotic beam assembly system in place of construction workers. This system consists of CF (Construction Factory) structure to provide adequate working environment to robot automation. The CF structure not only gives automation environment for a robot but also houses the equipments to protect from outside effects. The robotic beam assembly system also consists of robotic bolting system and robot transport mechanism. It utilizes various tools to insert and join the bolts and nuts. Visual servoing helps precise robot motion by sensing bolt hole and tail of the bolt. ITA system helps non skilled workers to easily perform the assembly work with the robot system. The robot transport mechanism includes sliding rail and cross-wired lift. It carries the robot to a desired position for assembly work.

  • This paper presents a method for building a real-time kernel of autonomous mobile robot control systems. Until now, most of robots have their own operation softwares dedicated only for their use. Sometimes, operation softwares were developed based on MS-DOS or other real -time kernel based on UNIX. However, MS-DOS has many restrictions for use as a robot operation system. Also, mix based real-time kernel has some Limitations for use with mobile robots. So, in this paper, we focus on building a real-time kernel based on Linux. The in this paper, the software modules of Task Management, Memory Management, Intertask Communication, and Synchronization are redesigned. To show the efficiency of the paper, it was applied to run Nomad Super Scout II avoiding obstacles detected by sonar sensor array.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the applicability and limitations of SPOT robots in the construction industry. The SPOT robot, which is being introduced to construction sites for smart construction with the progress of the 4th industrial revolution, is shaped like a four-legged dog and is equipped with various sensors for data collection and autonomous driving. In this study, hardware and software were analyzed, such as the size of the SPOT robot, mobility on slopes and heights, operating environment, and software functions that can collect data with a sensor weighing up to 14 kg. In addition, while the SPOT robot operates in a construction environment, performance such as stability, accuracy, signal connection distance, and obstacle avoidance are evaluated, and the applicability and limitations of the SPOT robot in the construction industry are analyzed. Based on this analysis, the purpose of this study is to evaluate when and how SPOT robots can be effectively used at construction sites, identify limitations, and derive contributions and improvements for the construction industry.

  • As robotics systems are becoming more complex there is the need to promote component based robot development, where systems can be constructed as the composition and integration of reusable building block. One of the most important challenges facing component based robot development is safeguarding against software component failures and malfunctions. The health monitoring of the robot software is most fundamental factors not only to manage system at runtime but also to analysis information of software component in design phase of the robot application. And also as a lot of monitoring events are occurred during the execution of the robot software components, a simple data treatment and efficient memory management method is required. In this paper, we propose an efficient events monitoring and data management method by modeling robot software component and monitoring factors based on robot software framework. The monitoring factors, such as component execution runtime exception, Input/Output data, execution time, checkpoint-rollback are deduced and the detail monitoring events are defined. Furthermore, we define event record and monitor record pool suitable for robot software components and propose a efficient data management method. To verify the effectiveness and usefulness of the proposed approach, a monitoring module and user interface has been implemented using OPRoS robot software framework. The proposed monitoring module can be used as monitoring tool to analysis the software components in robot design phase and plugged into self-healing system to monitor the system health status at runtime in robot systems.

  • In recent years, the number of high-rise buildings has been on the rise. As buildings have become larger in scale, significantly different issues related to their construction and maintenance have emerged. In addition, the automation and mechanization of the cleaning work for the curtain wall, one of the most frequently-performed tasks in building maintenance, is required as a fundamental measure. For this reason, a guide-rail cleaning robot system is emerging as one of the measures in response to external factors, including gust. Therefore, this is a preliminary study for the automation and mechanization of the curtain wall cleaning of high-rise buildings, and aims to derive the basic units and prepare for the concept of the guide rail. It is expected to serve as precedent research for the development and operation of a curtain-wall cleaning robot, and to prepare the basis for an final design of optimal guide rail.
