Hardware implemented ring buffer systems and methods are presented for the effective management of the ring buffer in TCP/IP communication. The layer interface of the ring buffer systems transfer free buffer and used buffer size information to the TCP/IP stack upper or low layer. The pointer updation interface calculates a temporary pointer from the data size which is needed by the present pointer of the ring buffer and upper or lowyer layer. The pointer manager of the ring buffer systems is responsible for saving the present pointer of the ring buffer, updating the ring buffer pointer to the new pointer, calculating the free buffer size and used buffer size of the ring buffer, and transferring the information to the upper layer. The ring buffer systems help the TCP/IP layer and TCP/IP upper or lower layer to decide the sending or receiving data size effectively. The delay of transferring data can be lowered by the ring buffer system.

Video streaming application such as YouTube is one of the most popular mobile applications. To adjust the quality of video for available network bandwidth, a streaming server provides multiple representations of video of which bit rate has different bandwidth requirements. A streaming client utilizes an adaptive bit rate scheme to select a proper video representation that the network can support. The download behavior of video streaming client player is governed by several parameters such as maximum buffer size. Especially, the size of the maximum playback buffer in the client player can greatly affect the user experience. To tackle this problem, in this paper, we propose the maximum buffer size optimization according to available network bandwidth and buffer status. Our simulation study shows that our proposed buffer size optimization scheme successfully mitigates playback stalls while preserving the similar quality of streaming video compared to existing ABR schemes.
A multimedia SoC often requires a large internal buffer, because it must store the whole search window to reduce the huge I/O bandwidth of motion estimation. However, the silicon area of the internal buffer increases tremendously as the search range becomes larger. This paper proposes a new method that greatly reduces the internal buffer size of a multimedia SoC while the computational cost, I/O bandwidth, and image quality do not change. In the proposed method, only the overlapped parts of search windows for consecutive macroblocks are stored in the internal buffer. The proposed method reduces the internal buffer. The proposed method reduces the internal buffer size to 1/5.0 and 1/8.8 when the search range is
${\pm}64{\times}{\pm}$64 and ${\pm}128{\times}{\pm}$128, respectively.

Reducing energy consumption in a wireless video sensor network (WVSN) is a crucial problem because of the high video data volume and severe energy constraints of battery-powered WVSN nodes. In this paper, we present an adaptive dynamic resizing approach for a SRAM communication buffer in a WVSN node in order to reduce the energy consumption and thereby, to maximize the lifetime of the WVSN nodes. To reduce the power consumption of the communication part, which is typically the most energy-consuming component in the WVSN nodes, the radio needs to remain turned off during the data buffer-filling period as well as idle period. As the radio ON/OFF transition incurs extra energy consumption, we need to reduce the ON/OFF transition frequency, which requires a large-sized buffer. However, a large-sized SRAM buffer results in more energy consumption because SRAM power consumption is proportional to the memory size. We can dynamically adjust any active buffer memory size by utilizing a power-gating technique to reflect the optimal control on the buffer size. This paper aims at finding the optimal buffer size, based on the trade-off between the respective energy consumption ratios of the communication buffer and the radio part, respectively. We derive a formula showing the relationship between control variables, including active buffer size and total energy consumption, to mathematically determine the optimal buffer size for any given conditions to minimize total energy consumption. Simulation results show that the overall energy reduction, using our approach, is up to 40.48% (26.96% on average) compared to the conventional wireless communication scheme. In addition, the lifetime of the WVSN node has been extended by 22.17% on average, compared to the existing approaches.
In delay tolerant networks (DTNs), delay is inevitable; thus, making better use of buffer space to maximize the packet delivery rate is more important than delay reduction. In DTNs, epidemic routing is a well-known routing protocol. However, epidemic routing is very sensitive to buffer size. Once the buffer size in nodes is insufficient, the performance of epidemic routing will be drastically reduced. In this paper, we propose a buffer scheme to optimize the performance of epidemic routing on the basis of the Lagrangian and dual problem models. By using the proposed optimal buffer scheme, the packet delivery rate in epidemic routing is considerably improved. Our simulation results show that epidemic routing with the proposed optimal buffer scheme outperforms the original epidemic routing in terms of packet delivery rate and average end-to-end delay. It is worth noting that the improved epidemic routing needs much less buffer size compared to that of the original epidemic routing for ensuring the same packet delivery rate. In particular, even though the buffer size is very small (e.g., 50), the packet delivery rate in epidemic routing with the proposed optimal buffer scheme is still 95.8%, which can satisfy general communication demand.
We use both theoretical analysis and simulations to study the impact of crosspoint-queued (CQ) buffer size on CQ switch throughput and delay performance under different traffic models, input loads, and scheduling algorithms. In this paper, we present the following. 1) We prove the stability of CQ switch using any work-conserving scheduling algorithm. 2) We present an exact closed-form formula for the CQ switch throughput and a non-closed-form but convergent formula for its delay using static non-work-conserving random scheduling algorithms with any given buffer size under independent Bernoulli traffic. 3) We show that the above results can serve as a conservative guide on deciding the required buffer size in pure CQ switches using work-conserving algorithms such as the random scheduling, under independent Bernoulli traffic. 4) Furthermore, our simulation results under real-trace traffic show that simple round-robin and random work-conserving algorithms can achieve quite good throughput and delay performance with a feasible crosspoint buffer size. Our work reveals the impact of buffer size on the CQ switch performance and provides a theoretical guide on designing the buffer size in pure CQ switch, which is an important step toward building ultra-high-speed switch fabrics.
Rate-based flow control plays an important role for efficient traffic management of Available Bit Rate(ABR) services. We deal with the problem of the buffer dimension for rate-based ABR control. In this paper, we analyze the Allowed Cell Rate(ACR) of a source and the queue size in a steady state. First, we investigate the effect of the number of active sources on the behavior of the ACR and the maximum queue size. Reflecting the effect of this real scenes, we determine the optimal buffer size and buffer threshold. Furthermore, our analytic results are compared with the case when the effect of the number of active sources is disregarded.
The characteristics of the internal circuits and the load capacitance should be included to optimize the size of BiCMOS buffer. In order to get the optimum size and delay time of the BiCMOS buffer, new size plane is suggested. By using the size plane, the optimum characteristics of CMOS buffer according to the number of stages can be obtained. From this method, delaytime, .tau.$_{D}$, is obtained 2.39 nsec with $V_{\var}$=5V, $C_{L}$=5pF, W=30.mu.m and $A_{e}$=135.mu. $m^{2}$.>..>...>.
DRS(Dynamic Right Sizing) (TBT-PLR:TCP Buffer Tuning Algorithm based on Packet Loss Ratio)은 TCP 송신측에는 ATBT 방법을 TCP 수신측에는 TBT-PLR 방법을 적용하였다.
