Hydrodynamic similarity was investigated in pressurized three-phase slurry bubble columns by selecting the bubble holdup and pressure drop as objective functions, for the effective design and scale-up of it. In addition, effects of operating variables on the bubble holdup with variation of column diameter were also analyzed. Gas velocity($U_G$), viscosity(${\mu}_{SL,eff}$) and surface tension(${\rho}_{SL}$) of slurry phase, density difference between the slurry and gas phases(${\rho}_{SL}-{\rho}_G$) depending on the operating pressure, pressure drop per unit length(${\Delta}P/L$), column diameter(D) and gravitational acceleration(g) were chosen as governing parameters in determining the bubble holdup and pressure drop in the column. From the dimensional analysis, four kinds of dimensionless groups were derived from the 7 parameters and 4 fundamental dimensions. Effects of dimensionless groups such as Reynolds, Froude and Weber numbers on the bubble holdup in the column were discussed. The pressure drop and bubble holdup could be predicted from the correlation of dimensionless groups effectively, which could be used as useful information for the design and scale-up of pressurized slurry bubble columns.

Bubbles generated in water receive an upward buoyant force due to the density and pressure difference of the surrounding fluid. Additionally, the behavior, shape, and heat exchange process of bubbles vary depending on the viscosity, surface tension, rising speed, and size difference with the surrounding fluid. In this study, we modeled speed, and heat transfer of a high-temperature single bubble rising in a cylindrical water tank. For this purpose, velocity, and temperature of the bubbles were calculated using theoretical equations, to be compared with numerical simulation results. The numerical analysis was performed using a commercial software, and the stability of the numerical analysis with mesh size was confirmed through calculation of the grid convergence index. The numerical analysis of the rising speed and temperature of a single bubble showed the values to converge when the minimum cell size was 1/160 of the bubble diameter, and the temperature decrease was confirmed to be the same as that of the surrounding fluid within 0.05 seconds.

A level-set method is used for analyzing the behaviors of gas bubbles in two fluids incompressible viscous flow domain. The governing equations are solved by using a finite volume method. The numerical results are verified by comparing with the experimental and other computational results. Computations for the deformations and motions of one or multi-bubbles in the flow domain with the initial undisturbed free interface are conducted. It can be seen that numerical results for different surface tension and density ratio arise very different behaviors of bubbles. When bubbles rise near the free interface, the free interface gives some great influence on the behaviors of bubbles. The present results computed by a level-set method give useful information about the properties of bubble motions and deformations.

Subcooled boiling under low pressure was numerically investigated using computational fluid dynamics(CFD). The wall boiling model was used for simulating the subcooled boiling; this model requires sub-models consisting of bubble departure diameter, nucleation site density and bubble departure frequency. The CFD code CFX provides the default models based on experimental data. Because these models are mostly developed under high pressure conditions, it would not be predicted well in low pressure conditions. Thus in this study, CFD validation for subcooled boiling under low pressure was analyzed. The numerical results were compared with experimental data from published paper. Simulations were performed with mass flux ranging from 250 to $750kg/m^2s$, heat flux ranging from 0.37 to $0.77MW/m^2$ and constant outlet pressure of 0.11 MPa. Employing the empirical correlation developed under low pressures could increase the accuracy of numerical analysis.

Recently only a few correlations between various factors due to the different grades of surface roughness for the nucleate pool boiling have been proposed. The main purpose of this work is to test the validity of these types of correlations between related factors to nucleate pool boiling phenomena. The boiling experiments using distilled water were carried out at the heat flux ranging from $7.4\times10^4\;to\;2.4\times10^5kcal/m^2h$ on the sintered porous metal surface with the cavity diameter of 10, n, 40, 70, $100{\mu}$, respectively, at the atmospheric pressure, To determine the bubble sizes, number of nucleation sites, delay and growth time, frequency of bubble emission and rising velocities of bubbles, the high speed motion picture technique was employed. In the correlation $f{\propto}D_b^n$, where f denotes frequency of bubble emission and $D_b$ departure diameter, n, the power factor of $D_b$, have been found to be from -2 to -10/3. The correlation C in the correlation between heat flux q and density of nucleation sites $\frac{N}{A}$, $q=C(\frac{N}{A})^n$, was appeared to be more crucial than the power factor n. The correlation of the heat flux q to the temperature difference ${\Delta}T$ and the density of nucleation sites$\frac{N}{A}$, was proposed to be $$q-460{\Delta}T^{\frac{5}{4}}=K{\Delta}T{\frac{5}{3}}(\frac{N}{A})^{\frac{2}{3}}$$. The values of heat transfer coefficient obtained in this experiments for the porous sintered metal surface appeared to be very high in comparison with the formerly obtained results for the other surfaces.

We report the results of the ionospheric measurement obtained from the instruments on board the Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite - 1 (KOMPSAT-l). We observed a deep electron density trough in the nighttime equatorial ionosphere during the great magnetic storm on 15 July 2000. We attribute the phenomena to the up-lifted F-layer caused by the enhanced eastward electric field, while the spacecraft passed underneath the layer. We also present the results of our statistical study on the equatorial plasma bubble formation. We confirm the previous results regarding its seasonal and longitudinal dependence. In addition, we obtain new statistical results of the bubble temperature variations. The whole data set of measurement for more than a year is compared with the International Reference Ionosphere (IRI). It is seen that the features of the electron density and temperature along the magnetic equator are more prominent in the KOMPSAT-l observations than in the IRI model.

Bubble behaviors in two-phase flows have been analyzed by tomography methods such as an algebraic reconstruction technique (ART) and a multiplicative algebraic reconstruction technique (MART). Initially, a bubbly flow and an annular flow have been investigated by cross-sectional view using computer synthesized phantoms. Two tomography methods have been compared to obtain more accurate results of the two-phase flows. Then, reconstruction of three-dimensional density distributions of phantoms with two and three bubbles have been accomplished by the MART method which provided the better results for the two-dimensional reconstructions accurately to analyze the bubble behaviors in the two-phase flow.
Sheets of SiC-SiC whisker maxed matrix were prepared from the mixed slurry of SiC whisker and SiC matrix by the rolling method. With the increase of SiC whisker, the pore size, the porosity and the phosphoric acid absorbency of the matrix were increased, while the bubble pressure was decreased. The activation energy for the transfer of H+ ion was decreased with the increase of mixing ratio of SiC whisker to the SiC matrix from the measurement of hydrogen ion conductivity. The activation energy was evaluated as 0.25 eV when the mixing ratio of SiC whisker to the SiC matrix was 1 : 2 and the activation energy was 0.16 eV for the 2 : 1 matrix. It means that SiC whisker matrix contributes to attain a better microstructure for the diffusion of hydrogen ion. From the measurement of single cell performance of matrix with various mixing ratio, it is concluded that if SiC-SiC whisker maxed matrix has a sufficient bubble pressure to prevent the crossover of H2 gas, the current density of a fuel cell is increased with the increase of acid absorbency of the matrix. Current density was improved from 140 mA/$\textrm{cm}^2$ for 0.25 mm thickness of matrix to 170 mA/$\textrm{cm}^2$ for the 0.20 mm one at 700 mV.

Computer Automated Radioactive Particle Tracking (CARPT) technique has been successfully utilized to measure the velocity profiles and mixing parameters in different multiphase flow systems where a single radioactive tracer is used to track the tagged phase. However, many industrial processes use a wide range of particles with different physical properties where solid particles could vary in size, shape and density. For application in such systems, the capability of current single tracer CARPT can be advanced to track more than one particle simultaneously. Tracking multiple particles will thus enable to track the motion of particles of different size shape and density, determine segregation of particles and probing particle interactions. In this work, a newly developed Multiple Radioactive Particle Tracking technique (M-RPT) used to track two different radioactive tracers is demonstrated. The M-RPT electronics was developed that can differentiate between gamma counts obtained from the different radioactive tracers on the basis of their gamma energy peak. The M-RPT technique was validated by tracking two stationary and moving particles (Sc-46 and Co-60) simultaneously. Finally, M-RPT was successfully implemented to track two phases, solid and liquid, simultaneously in three phase slurry bubble column reactors.

This experimental investigation has been conducted to determine the effects of swirling angle and flow patterns on distributions of void fraction, bubble velocity and two-phase pressure drop in a vertical straight tube. Swirling angles of $0^{\circ}$ (non swirling), $30^{\circ}$, and $45^{\circ}$ were tested with air-water two components over a range of superficial air velocities. A transparent lucite tube of 38mm in internal diameter was used for the test section. The void fraction and bubble velocities were measured by means of a optical fiber probe at the upper part of the swirler in the test section. Pressure drops which seem to be closely related with flow patterns and swirling angle were measured by a differential pressure transducer. It is shown that the probability density functions of pressure drop demonstrate peculiar features for both swirling angles and flow patterns, whereas the distributions of void fraction and bubble velocities are parabolic and flat shape in the vicinity of tube center, respectively except bubbly flow in any swirling angle cases, and the void fraction increases with increasing swirling angle around the center of tube.
