  • This paper presents a novel method to diagnose magnetization faults produced during magnetization process using stator coils of a brushless dc motor with concentrated windings. It is demonstrated that the stator coil magnetization faults can cause a drop of energy efficiency of the brushless dc motor through computer simulations using a magnetization fault model and efficiency test using compressors. The proposed method diagnoses the stator coil magnetization faults by using an inverter during the brushless dc motor driving test after the magnetization process is completed. An experimental study on the brushless dc motor for compressor shows that the stator coil magnetization faults can be detected with high sensitivity.

  • Although the structure of the brushless DC motor is similar to the one of the permanent magnet synchronous motor, its operating characteristics are the same as those of the permanent magnet DC motor. This is the reason that the commutators and brushes in the permanent magnet DC motor can be replaced by the power semiconductor devices and rotor position sensors for the brushless DC motor. In this paper, a current control method is presented to make a sinusoidal current waveform for constant torque generation and the operating characteristics of the brushless DC motor using the resolver as the rotor position sensor is also presented and experimented.

  • The equivalent transformation of a brushless DC motor into an separately exited DC motor has been possible with the vector control technique. Vector control is an effective technique for controlling variable speed drives of brushless DC motors. Conventional vector controllers, however, suffer from electrical machine parameter variations because these controllers depend on the parameters. This paper presents the vector control of brushless DC motor using a neural network. In the proposed method, a neural network is employed as on-line estimator of the nonlinear dynamic equations of brushless DC motor. The neural network based vector controller has the advantage of robustness against machine parameter variations as compared with conventional vector controller The simulation results using Matlab/Simulink verify the useful of the proposed method.

  • This paper deals with the electromagnetic field analysis of slotless brushless permanent magnet machines with three different magnetization patterns such as Halbach, parallel and radial magnetization. The magnetization modeling of Halbach, parallel and radial magnetization is performed analytically. And then, analytical solutions for open-circuit field distributions, armature reaction field distributions, flux linkages due to PMs and stator windings, torque, back-emf and inductance are derived in terms of magnetic vector potential and two-dimensional (2-d) polar coordinate systems. The analytical results are validated extensively by finite element (FE) analyses. The magnet volume required in order to produce identical flux density is compared with each magnetization. Finally, analytical solutions and derivation procedures of those presented in this paper can be applied to slotless and slotted brushless permanent magnet AC and DC machines.

  • This paper presents a novel current control method to reduce the current ripple due to commutation in brushless DC motor fed with unipolar PWM voltage source inverter. The proposed current control method can reduce the current ripple due to commutation in high speed range where the DC link voltage of the inverter is less than four times of the phase back-emf. The effectiveness of the proposed current control method is verified with digital simulations and experiments on the 250W brushless DC motor drive systems.

  • Mutual torque ripple in a brushless DC motor is the main source of acoustic noise, especially fur motor operation with high speed and torque. This paper presents a method to obtain mutual torque ripple to identify acoustic noise source. Mutual torque ripple can be determined by analyzing phase current shape and magnetic circuit with different lead angles. Current shape is determined by state space model of voltage equation with the use of inductance calculated by FEM, and confirmed by experimental results. Mutual torque ripple is also determined by FEM analysis for the calculated current shape. Acoustic noise experiment reveals that mutual torque ripple with different lead angle is one of the main sources for noise generation in a brushless DC motor.

  • This paper presents the analytical calculation of winding inductance for a single-phase brushless DC machine based on the magnetic circuit concept. The machine is used in the low power range of applications, such as ventilation fans, due to its simplicity and low cost. Since flux linkage is proportional to inductance, the calculation of winding inductance is of central importance. By comparison with experimental and analytical values, it is shown that proposed analytical expression is able to effectively predict the winding inductance of single-phase brushless DC machines at the design stage.

  • Recently, high-performance BLDC(Brushless DC) motors are being applied to various fields such as industrial and personal mobility devices and drones. To achieve the best performance of BLDC, sensors such as hall sensors, encoders, and resolvers are used to determine the position of the rotor, and various speed control technologies are being developed. However, due to problems with high-speed control due to external environmental factors and frequency bandwidth of semiconductor sensing devices, research on BLDC motors without semiconductor sensing devices is in progress. Therefore, in this study, a signal brush was added to the end of the rotor of a BLDC motor and the rotor position of the BLDC motor was detected by analyzing the signal output through the signal brush.

  • This paper describes an effort to develop a microcomputer-based parameter identification system for three phase and two phase brushless DC motor. Back EMF equation is derived from back EMF waveform of three phase and two phase brushless DC motor. In this paper, a new identification algorithm for the brushless DC motor parameters by Pasek's technique is developed. It is found that Pasek's equation is valid for the brushless DC motor, too. The results obtained clearly shows that it is possible to implement the identification system for the determination of the brushless DC motor parameters. To minimize errors due to the ripple component in the measured armature current, digital averaging firis employed. The whole identification process of signal generation, measuring, parameter determination is fully automated. The use of the propod method in the parameter identifition system shows that the averaged current curve is in excellent agreement with the estimated current curve. Therefore, this close agreement confirms the validity of this technique.

  • The paper describes a new PWM technique, which is suitable for brushless servo drives. By taking into consideration the armature electromotive force, an appropriate switching voltage vector can be selected to enable switching rate reduction. Simulation results show better steady-state performance of this method than that of the classical technique.
