  • Both sexes of a new species of Miraciidae belonging to the genus Amonardia Lang, 1948 are described. All materials collected from the cultivated brown alga, Undaria pinnatifida of Gijang, Korea. So far only one species, A. normani (Brady, 1872) from the algal bed at Jindo Island was recorded in Korea. The new species can easily be distinguished from its congeners by the combination of characters as follows: (1) shape of first antennular segment in female, (2) setal formular of mandible and maxillule, (3) setae of female sixth leg in female, and (4) shape of P2 endopod and exopod of fifth leg in male.

  • In the course of search for various bioactive compounds from marine algae, we found strong antioxidant activity of the methanolic extract of the brown alga G. elliptica. Chromatographic purification [ODS flash, gel-filtration on Sephadex LH-20, HPLC] of the BuOH layer of the methanolic extract afforded two known polyphenolic compounds, 6,6'-bieckol (1) and dieckol (2). Compound 1 showed acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE) inhibitory activities, free radical scavenging activity on DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydazyl) with IC$\_$50/ values of 91.2, 45.6 and 15.5 $\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$, respectively. • In continuing search for bioactive compounds from Korean marine algae, we found cholinesterase-inhibitory activity in the methanolic extract of brown alga Sargassum sagamianum. After partitioning between CHCl$_3$ and 30% MeOH, the former layer was purified by a series of ODS flash, silica column, gel-filtration on Sephadex LH-20, and HPLC to give two farnesylacetone derivatives. Their structures were identified by comparison with the literature data. Compounds 1 and 2 showed moderate acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase inhibitory activities with IC$\sub$50/ values of 65.0∼48.0 ${\mu}$M and 34.0∼23.0 ${\mu}$M, respectively. (omitted)

  • From Sargassum thunbergii which is widely distributed in coastal area of Korea, three norisoprenoids, (+)-epiloliolide (1), (-)-loliolide (2), and apo-9'-fucoxanthinone (3) were isolated by using column chromatography and reverse-phase HPLC. Compound 1, 2 and 3 were for the first time isolated from the Brown Alga Sargassum thunbergii. Particularly, Compound 1 was for the first time isolated the marine organism although it was reported from the terrestrial plant. Their structures have been determined by extensive 2-D NMR experiments such as $^1H COSY, NOESY, HMQC$, and HMBC and by comparison with the reported data in the literature.

  • Background: The present study investigates the potent skin whitening ability of ethanol extract from the brown alga, Padina boryana (PBE) which was collected in the shores of Fulhadhoo Island, the Maldives, and its specific pathways of action. The effect of PBE which contains a rich amount of polyphenols was evaluated using B16F10 murine melanoma cells and provides insight to the underlying mechanisms with reference to the inhibition of melanin formation. Methods: Melanin synthesis and cellular tyrosinase inhibition were assessed in the α-MSH-stimulated melanocytes. Melanogenic pathway-related protein expressions were investigated via Western blotting. ERK 42/44 was particularly examined considering its involvement in the melanogenic pathway. Further, RT-qPCR techniques were involved in gene expression analysis. Results: PBE dose-dependently inhibited the cellular melanin synthesis and tyrosinase levels. Western blotting revealed the potential of PBE to downregulate microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF), tyrosinase, and tyrosinase-related protein-1 and protein-2 (TRP-1 and TRP-2). Moreover, results explained the phosphorylation of ERK was sustained via PBE and hence declined the ultimate melanin synthesis. Gene expression analysis reinforced the results obtained. Conclusions: The study provides substantial evidence to express the potential of PBE to inhibit B16F10 melanoma cell melanin synthesis. Concisely, results suggest the ability of PBE to be involved in medicinal and cosmeceutical applications.

  • The inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) including ulcerative colitis and Crohn disease are characterized by chronic inflammation throughout the gastrointestinal tract. The prevalence of IBD has been increasing worldwide, and has sometimes led to irreversible impairment of gastrointestinal structure and functions. In the present study, we identified a new sulfoquinovosylmonoacylglycerols (SQMG) (1) together with two known SQMGs (2 and 3) regulating intestinal inflammation from the brown alga Turbinaria ornata. The anti-inflammatory properties of two bioactive SQMGs, 1 and 2 were evaluated using an in vitro co-culture system consisting of human epithelial Caco-2 cells and PMA (phorbol 12-myristate 12-acetate)-differentiated THP-1 macrophages. Treatment with 1 or 2 inhibited the production nitric oxide and prostaglandin E2 induced by lipopolysaccharide and interferon γ challenge. The expressions of inducible nitric oxide synthase and cyclooxygenase 2 were markedly down-regulated in response to inhibition of nuclear factor κB translocation to nucleus. These findings suggest the potential use of the brown alga T. ornata and its biologically active metabolites SQMGs as pharmaceutical adjuvants in the treatment of inflammation-related diseases, including IBD.

  • Ecological characteristics of a brown alga, Scytosiphon lomentaria, were investigated from January 2021 to December 2021 in its natural habitat off Sodol, Jumunjin, eastern coast of Korea. The S. lomentaria population at the site formed widespread patches on mid shore. During the investigation, environmental conditions including seawater temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen were monitored at the site. Growth and maturation of the S. lomentaria population were identified through qualitative and quantitative investigations. An estimation of the effective cumulative temperature for maturation of the alga was obtained based on growth data and a biological zero temperature of 8℃. Sporangia were observed from February to May when seawater temperatures ranged from 7.7℃ to 16.4℃. A maturation peak was detected in April when seawater temperature was 12.1℃. After zoospore release, the alga became bleached and only the crust remained after June. Developmental initiation of the thallus occurred at temperatures above 8℃. Its maturation required approximately 162 degree-days.
