  • The aim of this study is to enhance the flame retardancy by the synergism effect of phosphorus and bromine groups. The flame-retardant polyurethane coatings containing phosphorus and bromine compounds were synthesized. After synthesizing the intermediate products of tetramethylene bis(orthophosphate) (TBOP) and trimethylolpropane/2,3-dibromopropionic acid (2,3-DBP) [2,3-DBP-adduct], the condensation polymerization was performed with four different monomers of two intermediate products, 1,4-butanediol, and adipic acid to obtain four-components copolymer. In the condensation polymerization, the content of phosphorus was fixed to be 2wt%, and the content of 2,3-DBP that provides bromine component was varied to be 10, 20, and 30wt%, and we designated the prepared modified polyesters containing phosphorus and bromine as DTBA-10C, -20C, -30C. Average molecular weight and polydispersity index of the preparation of DTBAs were decreased with increasing 2,3-DBP content because of increase of hydroxyl group that retards reaction. We found that the thermal stability of the prepared DTBAs increased with bromine content at high temperature.

  • The crystal structure of an ethylene sorption complex of dehydrated $Ag_{12}-A $reacted with bromine vapor has determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques in the cubic space group of Pm3m at 22(l)$^{\circ}$C (a=12.180(2) ${\AA}$). The crystal was prepared by dehydration of $Ag_{12}$-A at 400 $^{\circ}$C and $2 {\times} l0^{-6}$ Torr for 2 days, followed by exposure to 200 Torr of ethylene gas at 24(l) $^{\circ}$C for 1 hr. After the ethylene gas was evacuated for 1 hr, the crystal was exposed to 180 Torr of bromine vapor at 24(l) $^{\circ}$C for 1.5 h. The structure was refined to the final error indices, $R_1=0.066\;and\;R_2$ (weighted)=0.055, using 137 independent reflections for which I>3${\sigma}$I. About 55% of the sodalite unit contain two 6-ring $Ag^+$ ions and the remaining 45% contain $Ag_6$ molecules complexed to 2 $Ag^+$ ions at 6-ring sites to give $(Ag^+)_2(Ag_6).$ Upon sorption of ethylene, 4.75 ethylene molecules were sorbed per unit cell and of these, only 1.25 ethylene molecules were brominated by treatment of dibromine because of the limitation of the available space for the reaction products in the large cavity. In the large cavity, each of 3.5 $Ag^+$ ions forms a lateral ${\pi}$ complex with an ethylene molecule. About 2.5 8-ring $Ag^+$ ions per unit cell interact with 1.25 1,2-dibromoethane and each of ca. 1.25 6-ring $Ag^+$ ions also interacts with one of bromine atoms of 1,2-dibromoethane. Each bromine atom approaches a carbon atom with C-Br(l)=2.07(20) ${\AA}$ and C-Br(2)=2.07(10) ${\AA}$, respectively.

  • The rate of the bromine-exchange reaction between gallium bromide and n-propyl bromide in 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene and in nitrobenzene was measured at 19, 25 and $40^{\circ}C$, using n-propyl bromide labelled with Br-82. The results indicated that the exchange reaction was second order with respect to gallium bromide and first order with respect to n-propyl bromide. The third-order rate constant determined at $19^{\circ}C$ is $2.9{\times} 10^{-2}l^2{\cdot}mole^{-2}{\cdot}sec^{-1}$ in 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene and $4.5{\times}10^{-3}l^2{\cdot}mole^{-2}{\cdot}sec^{-1}$. in nitrobenzene. The activation energy, the enthalpy of activation and the entropy of activation for the exchange reaction were also determined. Reaction mechanism for the bromine exchange of n-propyl bromide seemed to be similar to those observed in earlier studies with other alkyl bromides.

  • The reaction of gas-phase atomic bromine with highly covered chemisorbed hydrogen atoms on a silicon surface is studied by use of the classical trajectory approach. It is found that the major reaction is the formation of HBr(g), and it proceeds th rough two modes, that is, direct Eley-Rideal and hot-atom mechanism. The HBr formation reaction takes place on a picosecond time scale with most of the reaction exothermicity depositing in the product vibration and translation. The adsorption of Br(g) on the surface is the second most efficient reaction pathway. The total reaction cross sections are $2.53{\AA}2$ for the HBr formation and $2.32{\AA}2$ for the adsorption of Br(g) at gas temperature 1500 K and surface temperature 300 K.

  • The ring opening of epoxides with elemental iodine and bromine in the presence of three diamine podands 7-9 as new catalysts affords vicinal iodo alcohols and bromo alcohols in high yields. This new procedure occurs regioselectively under neutral and mild conditions in various aprotic solvents even when sensitive functional groups are presented.

  • The kinetic study on the bromine-exchange reaction of antimony tribromide with t-butyl bromide in nitrobenzene or 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene has been carried out, using Br-82 labelled antimony tribromide. The results show that the exchange reaction is first order with respect to t-butyl bromide and 1.5th order with respect to antimony tribromide. It is assumed that the 1.5th order indicates the coexistance of first- and second-order kinetics. Reaction mechanisms for the exchange reaction are proposed.
