Digital Broadcast Service is being very popular and the delivery mechanism for digital broadcast content through IP network has progressed constantly, due to the advance of video and audio compression and network technologies. From these trends, in Korea, the commercial IPTV service starts in this year after the law related to IPTV is enacted last year. Since IPTV service, which integrates broadcast and communication services, can give an infrastructure for fusion of communication and interactive multimedia data service, IPTV service is attractive. Recently, by the advent of various wireless connection technologies and the mobile devices of high capability, Mobile IPTV, which has an advantage of not only IPTV but also mobile TV, has gained much interest. In this paper, we review a necessary ingredient for Mobile IPTV in the next generation wired/wireless convergence network environment which consists of heterogeneous wireless access networks. In addition, we propose the scheme for user mobility and service session mobility management using RTSP protocol and introduce the service gateway concept to guarantee the extension of IPTV service platform.

In wireless sensor networks (WSNs), most energy saving asynchronous MAC protocols are custom tailored for unicast communications only. However, broadcast protocols are very commonly used in WSNs for a variety of functionalities, such as gathering network topology information, event monitoring and query processing. In this paper, we propose a novel low-power asynchronous broadcast MAC protocol called Alarm Broadcast (A-CAST). A-CAST employs the strobe preamble that specifies the residual waiting time for the following data transmission. Each receiver goes back to sleep upon hearing the strobe preamble for the residual time duration, to conserve energy and to wake up just before data transmission starts. We compute the energy consumption of A-CAST via rigorous mathematical analysis. The analytic results show that A-CAST outperforms B-CAST, a simple broadcast extension of the well-known B-MAC. We also implement A-CAST on sensor motes and evaluated its performance through real experiments. Our experimental results show that A-CAST reduces the energy consumption by up to 222% compared to the previously proposed protocols.
Recently, IoT applications are being deployed in Smart TVs, and these IoT applications are using smart TVs as application platforms rather than broadcast platforms. With the advent of Hybrid broadcast technologies, now it becomes available to develop IoT applications which are coupled to the broadcast information. However, the existing IoT services are not suitable for Hybrid broadcast application since they are built on cloud and require various protocol implementations. In this paper, a Fog Computing-based architecture for hybrid broadcast application is proposed. Instead of accessing IoT services from hybrid broadcast app directly, the proposed architecture places Fog Applet Server between them and distribute loads of hybrid broadcast app to the Fog Applet. The proposed architecture is implemented as a service to control IoT device with hybrid application.

Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) is used for mapping a network address to physical address in many network technologies. However, since ARP protocol has no security feature, it always abused by attackers for performing ARP-based attacks. Researchers presented many technologies to improve ARP protocol, but most of them require a high implementation cost or scarify the network performance for using ARP protocol securely. In this paper, we present an ARP-disabled network system to neutralize the ARP-based attacks. "ARP-disabled" means suppress the ARP messages like request, response and broadcast messages, but not the ARP table. In our system, ARP tables are used for managing static ARP entries without prior knowledge (e.g. IP, MAC list of client devices). This is possible because the MAC address was designed to be derived from IP address. In general, our system is safe from the ARP-based attacks even the attacker has a strong power. Moreover, we saved network bandwidth by disabling the ARP messages.

As a way to build more efficient and intelligent container cranes for todays hub ports, communication networks are used to interconnect numerous sensors, actuators, controllers, and operator switches and consoles that are spatially distributed over a crane. Various signals such as sensor values and operator's commands are digitized and broadcast on the network instead of using separate wiring cables. This not only makes the design and manufacturing of a crane more efficient, but also easier implementation of intelligent control algorithms. This paper presents the performance evaluation of CAN(Controller Area Network), TTP(Time Triggered Protocol) and Byteflight that can be used for cranes. Through discrete event simulation, several important quantitative performance factors such as the probability of a transmission failure, average system delay (data latency) and maximum system delay have been evaluated.

In this paper, we propose a novel cooperative routing protocol (NCRP) for wireless networks. The proposed protocol uses cooperative transmission to improve end-to-end outage probability. The broadcast nature ensures that the destination can receive a packet from the source or from the relays and if it cannot correctly decode the packet, the successful relays will start a retransmission. The NCRP protocol can skip some transmissions from the intermediate relays, thereby reducing the total power consumption. Theoretical results are derived and verified by simulation results.
Broadcast has been often used to disseminate the frequently requested data efficiently to a large volume of mobile clients over a single or multiple channels. Conventional concurrency control protocols for mobile transactions are not suitable for the wireless broadcast environments due to the limited bandwidth of the up-link communication channel. In wireless broadcast environments, the server often broadcast different data items with different frequency to incorporate the data access patterns of mobile transactions. The previously proposed concurrency control protocols for mobile transactions in wireless broadcast environments are focused on the mobile transactions with uniform data access patterns. However, these protocols perform poorly when the data access pattern of update mobile transaction are not uniform but skewed. The update mobile transactions with skewed data access patterns will be frequently aborted and restarted due 4o the update conflict of the same data items with a high access frequency. In this paper, we propose an energy-efficient concurrence control protocol for mobile transactions with skewed data access as well as uniform data access patterns. Our protocol use a random back-off technique to avoid the frequent abort and restart of update mobile transactions. We present in-depth experimental analysis of our method by comparing it with existing concurrency control protocols. Our performance analysis show that it significantly decrease the average response time, the amount of upstream and downstream bandwidth usage over existing protocols.
DMB video/audio service was successfully launched. DMB data service is a matter of primary concern now. The TTI(Traffic and Travel Information) service is considered as a killer application of the data service. Tn this paper, we propose a method for design and implementation of the broadcasting system for TTI service. The proposed TTI service system consists of an authoring tool, the DB module, the Transmission module and Monitoring module. This system satisfies the national TTA standards of the Traffic and Travel Information data services for terrestrial DMB; TPEG(Transport Protocol Experts Group) platform. The system was designed to support real-time automatic transmission for CTT and CTT SUM, and non real-time authoring & automatic transmission for POI and SDI, and was focused on the capability to make high-quality contents efficiently and to send them to the data inserter reliably. The performance of the implemented system was proven through the conformance tests with the various commercial receivers. After the continuous upgrade, the system is being used in commercial service.

In this paper, we propose a new reliable broadcast protocol referred to as timer-based reliable broadcast (TRB) for wireless sensor networks (WSNs). The proposed TRB scheme exploits (1) bitmap based explicit ACK to effectively reduce the unnecessary error control messages and (2) randomized timer for ACK transmission to substantially reduce the possibility of contentions. Although it has been argued that 100% reliability is not necessary in WSNs, there should be messages (such as mission-critical message, task assignment, software updates, etc.) that need to be reliably delivered to the entire sensor field. We propose to use the TRB algorithm for such cases. Performance evaluation shows that the TRB scheme achieves 100 % reliability significantly better than other schemes with expense of slightly increased energy consumption.

In a multi-hop wireless sensor network, broadcasting is an elementary operation to support command message sending, route discovery and other application tasks. Broadcasting by flooding may cause serious redundancy, contention, and collision in the network, which is referred to as the broadcast storm problem. Many broadcasting schemes have been proposed to give better performance than simple flooding in wireless sensor network. How to decide whether re-broadcast or not also poses a dilemma between reach ability and efficiency under different host densities. In this paper, we present popular broadcasting schemes, which can reduce re-broadcast packets and improve SRB(Saved ReBroadcast). Simulation results show different levels of improvement over the simple flooding scheme.
