Sky-bridges between adjacent buildings can enhance lateral stiffness and limit the impact of lateral forces. This study analysed the structural capabilities and dynamic performances of sky-bridge-coupled buildings under various sets of ground motions. Finite Element (FE) analyses were carried out with the link being iteratively repositioned along the full height of the structures. Incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) and probabilistic damage distribution were also applied. The results indicated that the establishment of sky-bridges caused a slight change in the natural frequency and mode shapes. The sky-bridge system was shown to be efficient in controlling displacement and Inter-Storey Drift Ratio (%ISDR) and reducing the probability of damage in the higher floors. The most efficient location of the sky-bridge, for improving its rigidity, was found to be at 88% of the building height. Finally, the effects of two types of materials (steel and concrete) and end conditions (hinged and fixed) were studied. The outcomes showed that coupled buildings with a sky-bridge made of steel with hinged connection could withstand ground motions longer than those made of concrete with fixed connection.
In recently, sky-bridge are often applied to high-rised adjacent buildings for pedestrian bridge. the seisnic response control of adjacent buildings have been studied and magneto-rheological(MR) fluid dampers have been applied to seismic response control. In this study, vibration control effect of the MR damper connected adjacent buildings has been investigated. Adjacent building structures with different natural frequencies were used as example structures. Two typed of control methods, displacement based or velocity based, are applied to determinate control force of MR damper. In this numerical analysis, it has been shown that displacement-based control algorithm is more effective than velocity-based control algorithm for seismic response control of adjacent buildings. And, when displacement-based control method is applied to control of adjacent buildings, the control of building occurred large displacement is more efficient in reducing the seismic response.
This paper presents results of a study on wind loads and wind induced dynamic response of bridge jointed twin-towered buildings. Utilizing the high-frequency force balance technique, the drag and moment coefficients measured in wind tunnel tests, and the maximum acceleration rms values on the top floor of towers, are analyzed to examine the influence of building's plan shapes and of intervals between towers. The alongwind, acrosswind and torsional modal force spectra are investigated for generic bridge jointed twin-towered building models which cover twin squares, twin rhombuses, twin triangles, twin triangles with sharp corners cut off, twin rectangles and individual rectangle with the same outline aspect ratio as the twin rectangles. The analysis of the statistical correlation among three components of the aerodynamic force corroborated that the correlation between acrosswind and torsional forces is significant for bridge jointed twin-towered buildings.
The new method for evaluating the displacement tolerance of sky-bridges with pin-roller type supports was proposed considering both return period of phase difference between connected buildings and geometrical characteristics of skybridge. Because displacement tolerance is relative value, which is most affected by the phase difference of the connected buildings, the dynamic response of these building with time history analysis should be evaluated. However, the initial phase could not be specified, so the result of displacement tolerance would be varied with respect to initial value. Thus, the tolerance can be reasonably evaluated SRSS calculation with design displacements based on statistical approach and of each building. In addition, the geometrical characteristics of sky-bridge should be considered because the transverse displacement of sky-bridge span causes the shear deformation of the bridge and longitudinal displacement tolerance cannot release the shear deformation. Therefore, the some pin-end support in sky-bridge should have longitudinal displacement tolerance to accommodate the shear deformation. By resolving this shear deformation, it is possible not only to accommodate transverse displacement, but also to avoid the complicated joint details such as both pot bearing and guided supports with shear key.
Deflection control in tall buildings is a challenging issue. Connecting of the towers is an interesting idea for architects as well as structural engineers. In this paper, two reinforced concrete core-wall towers are connected by a truss bridge with buckling restrained braces. The buildings are 40 and 60-story. The effect of the location of the bridge is investigated. Response spectrum analysis of the linear models is used to obtain the design demands and the systems are designed according to the reliable codes. Then, nonlinear time history analysis at maximum considered earthquake is performed to assess the seismic responses of the systems subjected to far-field and near-field record sets. Fiber elements are used for the reinforced concrete walls. On average, the inter-story drift ratio demand will be minimized when the bridge is approximately located at a height equal to 0.825 times the total height of the building. Besides, because of whipping effects, maximum roof acceleration demand is approximately two times the peak ground acceleration. Plasticity extends near the base and also in major areas of the walls subjected to the seismic loads.
The green building is one of biggest factors to go the goal of energy saving and environmental conservation, "reduction of energy consumption, friendly energy technology, recycling of resource, and environmental pollution reduction technology. The purpose of these green buildings realized by the energy-saving technology such as the thermal bridge breaker(or thermal bridge block). Thermal bridges are localized elements that penetrate insulated portions of building envelope that results in heat loss. The purpose of this paper is to describe the technical interactions for patents of a thermal bridge breaker(TTB) used in green building practices, and be subject to investigation to TTB in the leading countries, that is, United State, Europe Union, Japan, and Korea. As a result, there are four TTB categories(roof, wall-slab connection, opening, footing) in house or building. The TTB categories is remarkable technology that is apparatus in slab-wall joints and sealing element of opening frame in walls.
