  • In order to properly manage trees in rivers, the impact of trees on flooding and their ecological characteristics need to be considered and a plan needs to be established. The hydraulic impact by trees is reduction of conveyance and hydraulic structure's function due to overturn arising from flow force. A field pulling test was carried out to measure the critical resistance force for when trees break in order to discover the level of resistance that trees inside the river have to external force. The relevant factors for discovering the critical breaking moment for trees include tree species, which determines the external characteristic of trees, tree diameter at breast height, and tree height. In this study, the correlation between critical breaking moment and diameter at breast height were used. The tree's limit or critical breaking moment was tested using 100 shrubs and tall trees with a breast height diameter of 4.9 to 32.8 cm. It was difficult to derive a correlation between diameter at breast height and critical breaking moment when shrubs and tall trees were being considered together, but when only tall trees were considered, a consistent correlation was found between them.

  • This experiment has been made to study the relationship between several characters affecting the field lodging and to establish some useful standards for selection of lodging resistant varieties and to classify the degree of lodging resistance in wheat and barley varieties of different sources. The experiment was carried at the Crop Experiment Station, Suwon in 1968. The results obtained are summarized as followings. a. The lodging index modified with bending moment of culm at breaking seemed to be the most useful character in checking the lodging resistance. Highly significant positive correlation (Barley; r=0.40-0.67, Wheat; r=0.46-0.68) was obtained between the lodging index and actual field lodging. b. Between two essential components expressing bending stiffness of the culm, the bending moment at breaking and secondary moment of inertia, a highly significant positive correlation (Barley; r=0.59, wheat; r=0.46-0.53) was observed. c. The bending stiffness of culm got stronger as the dry weight per unit culm, which express the quantity of accumulated dry matters in culm, increased. The correlation coefficient between those two factors was 0.35 to 0.40 in barley and 0.33 to 0.76 in wheat respectively. d. In both wheat and barley, highly significant negative correlation between lodging index and the other factors such as dry weight per unit culm (Barley; r=-0. 51 to -0.70, Wheat; r=-0.65 to -0.83) and bending moment of culm at breaking (Barley; r=-0.29 to -0.69, Wheat: r=-0.54 to -0.89) were observed. Particulary, weight of culm at breaking, secondary moment of inertia and section modulus showed significant negative correlation with lodging index in wheat. e. Outside diameter of culm expressed more intimate relationship with physical characteristics of culm than inside diameter and also showed highly significant correlation with weight of culm at breaking (Barley; r=0.42-0.56, Wheat; r=0.39-0.44) and with bending moment of culm at breaking (Barley; r=0.40-0.41, Wheat; r=0.38-0.49) and with secondary moment of inertia (Barley; r=0.56-0.57, Wheat; r=0.28-0.98) and with section modulus (Wheat; r=0.22-0.96). Between the thickness of culm and physical characteristics of culm also showed the positive correlation. f. There was positive correlation between the culm length and actual field lodging in several groups of variety among the varieties tested. But the culm length seemed to undesirable as a selection measure for the selection of the lodging resistant variety considering the stiffness of culm. g. In classification of lodging resistance for the varieties tested, many Korean barley varieties expressed excellent lodging resistant than wheat, but most of the wheat and barley varieties from Japan considered quite resistant to lodging. h. In selection of lodging resistant varieties, lodging index lower than 1.67 in barley and 1. 76 in wheat considered highly resistant to actual field lodging.

  • As the LNG carrier operates in ice covered waters, it is key to ensure the overall safety, which is related to the coupling effect of ice-breaking process and internal liquid sloshing. This paper focuses on the sloshing simulation of the ice-breaking LNG carrier, and the numerical method is proposed using Circumferential Crack Method (CCM) and Volume of Vluid (VOF) with two main key factors (velocity νx and force Fx). The ship motion analysis is carried out by CCM when the ship navigates in the ice-covered waters with a constant propulsion power. The velocity νx is gained, which is the initial excitation condition for the calculation of internal sloshing force Fx. Then, the ship motion is modified based on iterative computations under the union action of ice-breaking force and liquid sloshing load. The sloshing simulation under the LNG tank is studied with the modified ship motion. Moreover, an ice-breaking LNG ship with three-leaf type tank is used for case study. The internal LNG sloshing is simulated with three different liquid heights, including free surface shape and sloshing pressure distribution at a given moment, pressure curves at monitoring points on the bulkhead. This present method is effective to solve the sloshing simulation during ice-breaking process, which could be a good reference for the design of the polar ice-breaking LNG carrier.

  • The objective of this study was to analyze lodging-related traits using different cultivars from Korea, Japan, and the U.S. in direct seeded rice on dry paddy field. Stem diameter and culm wall thickness were highest in 'Caloro' followed by 'Nongan', 'M202', and 'Calrose'. All the U.S. cultivars were higher than the others in stem diameter and culm wall thickness. These two traits were important with regard to lodging. The highest breaking strength (1442g) was observed in Caloro. 'Gancheoek', 'Dongjin', and transplanted 'Hatsuboshi' showed more than 1000g in breaking strength. Lodging index was lowest in Hatsuboshi followed by Nongan and Gancheok. Even though breaking strength of the U.S. cultivars was higher than others, their lodging index values were high. There were no statistically significant differences in starch content. However, Calrose, Caloro, Dongjin, and Koshihikari were relatively higher than others in starch content. Positive correlations were found between culm base weight, lignin and breaking strength. High contents of lignin and cellulose were observed in Nongan, transplanted Hatsuboshi, Calrose, and Caloro. Traits such as stem diameter, culm wall thickness, bending moment, culm length, breaking strength, cellulose, lignin, and culm base weight were closely related to a lodging index. According to path coefficient analysis, most important traits were culm length, stem diameter, thickness of clum wall, and top plant weight.

  • This experiment was to evaluate the growth characteristics of lodging resistance cultivated at sandbed in rice varieties. Five varieties were used in this studies. The leaf area, leaf dry weight, culm dry weight and total dry weight of cultivated rice seedling at sandbed showed the maximal values at heading stage, but decreased according to growth development. The number of newly developed roots of rice seedlings cultivated at sand pot were the most at the 30 days seedling stage, but those were decreasing at 40 to 45 days seedling stage. Cheongmyungbyeo and Dongjinbyeo showed the most vigor in newly developed roots. The bending moment at breaking of rice internodes were the largest at the 4th node, but decreased at the top internodes. Cheongmyungbyeo and Dongjinbyeo were proved lodging resistant varieties by the bending moment. The weight of culm base was positively correlated with bending moment at breaking of rice culm, but lodging index was negatively correlated weight of culm base and root dry weight, respectively.

  • Lodging is one of the important constraints in rice production. The lodging destroys the canopy structure, and sharply reduces the capacity of photosynthetic rate and dry matter production. In cereal crops, stem lodging can be classified into two types: stem breaking type and stem bending type. To improve stem lodging resistance, it is important to reveal strong culm traits of superior lodging resistant varieties. There are large varietal differences in parameters associated with the bending moment at breaking (M) and flexural rigidity (FR). The indica variety Takanari possesses large M due to its large section modulus (SM) despite of its small bending stress (BS), while Takanari also has large FR due to its large secondary moment of inertia (SMI) and Young's modulus (YM). To identify quantitative trait loci (QTLs) and the corresponding genes associated with the parameters for M ($=SM{\times}BS$) and FR ($=SM{\times}YM$) should enable to develop lodging resistant varieties, efficiently. In order to identify QTLs for cell wall materials such as cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin associated with BS and YM, a set of Chromosome Segment of Substitution Lines (CSSLs) consisted of 37 lines with chromosome segments of Koshihikari in the genetic background of Takanari were used. Takanari had large M and small BS as compared with Koshihikari. The QTLs for BS were estimated on chromosomes 3, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12. Koshihikari alleles increased BS in these QTLs. Takanari had a large FR due to its large SMI and YM as compared with Koshihikari. The YM was increased by substitution of the Koshihikari chromosomal segments on chromosomes 2, 10 and 11. Other QTLs estimated on chromosomes 7 and 12 that Koshihikari alleles contributed to the decrease of YM. For lignin, only one major QTL for lignin density was detected on chromosome 11. Hollocellulose densities were increased by the substitution of Koshihikari segments on chromosomes 5 and 11. On the other hand, these were decreased on chromosomes 1 and 3 by substitution of Koshihikari segments. QTLs for cellulose density were estimated on chromosomes 1, 3 and 5 by substitution of Koshihikari segments. For hemicellulose, QTL on chromosome 3 showed that hemicellulose density decreased by the substitution of Koshihikari segment. However, hemicellulose densities on chromosomes 5, 8 and 11 showed the opposite effects. The QTLs for hemicellulose, cellulose, and hollocelulose densities identified on chromosome 5 overlapped with that for bending stress, indicating the positive effect of Koshihikari segment on increasing bending stress. These results suggest that some QTLs for the densities of cell wall materials contribute to increasing bending stress and Young's modulus, and could be utilized to improve the lodging resistance for both types of breaking and bending in rice varieties.

  • L/UL(Load/unload) mechanism has been widely used in SFF(Small form factor) HDD because L/UL technology has many advantages such as an increase of areal density, reduction of power consumption and improvement of shock resistance. In this system, the most important design goal is no slider-disk contact and fast air-hearing breaking during L/UL process. To do so, we should consider many design parameters related to L/UL system. The ramp shape is the most dominant component among parameters which dramatically affect the L/UL performance. This paper makes an advanced ramp model using ANSYS/LS-DYNA. Through this FE model, this paper investigates the effect of initial ramp slope and location of air-bearing breaking. From the experiment for three different ramps, we also verify that experimental results agree with simulation results. We conclude that the ramp design should have small ramp slope at the moment which a suspension tap contacts with ramp and large ramp slope after air-bearing breaking in order to improve L/UL Performance.

  • This study was to investigate the caponization effects on bone characteristics in male chickens, and the optimum testosterone implantation dosage on bone characteristics improvement. Healthy Single Comb White Leghorn cockerels were caponized at 12-wk-old and selected at 16-wk-old for a 10-wk feeding experiment. Fifteen intact male and caponized male chickens (capon) respectively were assigned to trial 1. Ten sham-operated chickens and 40 capons (randomly allocated into four treatments) were implanted with cholesterol (1.62 mm i.d., 3.16 mm o.d., $9.24{\pm}0.36$ mg), low (1 mm i.d., 3 mm o.d., $5.88{\pm}0.23$ mg), medium (1.62 mm i.d., 3.16 mm o.d., $9.81{\pm}0.17$ mg) or high dose (2 mm i.d., 4 mm o.d., $16.7{\pm}0.24$ mg) of testosterone in trial 2. The results from trial 1 showed that the tibia length, relative tibia weight, breaking strength, bending moment and stress in intact males were higher than capons (p<0.05). The blood phosphorus concentration in capons was higher than the intact male chickens (p<0.05). Caponization also resulted in more antrums and osteoclasts within periosteum and cortical bone from histological observation. In trial 2, the adverse impact of caponization on the bone breaking strength, bending moment and stress could be alleviated through medium dose testosterone implantation. It appears that caponization reduced androgen secretion hence influenced the biomechanical characteristics of bone (tibia) and these adverse effects could be alleviated through appropriate dose of testosterone implantation.

  • This experiment was conducted to study the effects of nitrogen top-dressed at the different growth stages on the morphological and physical characteristics of barley culm. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. By top-dressing of nitrogen in March, each internode length from the third to the fifth internode was shortened, and total fresh weight of the top, dry weight per unit culm, inside or outside culm diameter and thickness of culm were increased. Therefore these characteristics related to lodging indicated the beneficial changes for lodging resistance by top-dressing of nitrogen in March. 2. Both weight of culm at breaking and bending moment of culm at breaking, expressing lodging resistance of culm, were increased in the plots of nitrogen top-dressed in March. Accordingly lodging resistance became higher by top-dressing of nitrogen in March. 3. Both section modulus and secondary moment of inertia, expressing bending stiffness of culm, were increased by top-dressing of nitrogen in March. Accordingly lodging index, expressing comprehensive lodging resistance, became low by top-dressing of nitrogen in March. 4. Both spike weight and grain yield were increased by top-dressing of nitrogen in March. Consequently we came to the conclusion that the suitable top-dressing time of nitrogen was in March.

  • This experiment was carried out to obtain basic information on the lodging characteristics and yield components of rice plants by new anti-lodging reagent 'KIM-112' (3%, Wp) application at 30 days before heading (DBH) to 5 DBH under two dosage levels (lg 2g, a. i. /10a) at the Yeongnam Crop Experiment Station in 1989. Culm length was shortened by 10-17% at 1g, a. i. /10a and by 16-23% at 2g of KIM -112 applications. The shortening effect of internode was different by dosages and application times: 2g treatment was greater effect than 19 and early application resulted in shortening of lower internode while this was upper internode at the late application. There were positive correlation between culm length and lodging index, the 1st and the 4th internode lengths had on important effect to lodging index. Thickness of culm wall, culm diameter and weight of basal part of culm were not affected by KIM-112 application. However anti-lodging characters improved by increasing the breaking weight and by decreasing the moment. Lodging index was related to breaking weight, moment and weight of panicle. Heading date by KIM-112 application was delayed one to four days and number of grains per panicle was decreased by shortened panicle length as compared with untreated control, but yield capacity was high a little because of improvement ripening ratio by no lodging.
